“A Burst of Light: Living with Cancer"
The year I became fifty felt like a great coming together for me. I was very proud of having made it for half a century, and in my own style. “Time for a change,” I thought, “I wonder how I’m going to live the next half.”

🧵#ODT in 1934 #AudreLorde was born. To celebrate the 87th birthday of the great “black, lesbian, mother, warrior, poet”, we are going to tweet excerpts on her cancer #livedexperience & politics from The Cancer Journals (1980) and A Burst of Light (1988) #histmed #bcsm #bccww
"The Cancer Journals"

“Each woman responds to the crisis that breast cancer brings to her life out of a whole pattern, which is the design of who she is and how her life has been lived. The weave of her every day existence is the training ground for how she handles crisis.
Some women obscure their painful feelings surrounding mastectomy with a blanket of business-as-usual, thus keeping those feelings forever under cover, but expressed elsewhere.

so, going to jump into this convo but based on the responses, not sure it will be worth it as it doesn't seem there is much interest in discussion #bcsm #bccww
A lot of the negative response is understandably due to the use of a med with a lot of side effects (tamoxifen) to reduce breast density instead of focusing on improving screening techniques for those with dense breasts 1/ #bcsm #bccww
A bit of background info: ~40-50% of those screened w/mammograms have dense breasts. That makes it harder to find cancers on the mammogram. Dense breasts are also *one* risk factor for breast cancer but not everyone w/dense breasts is considered "high risk" 2/ #bcsm #bccww

Breast Density is often Hereditary
I don't have a daughter. If I did, I'm damn sure I'd want her to be told about her #Breastdensity
Stop playing with women's lives, advise Ultrasound for those with #Densebreasts @IMT_latest @DonnellyStephen @alankellylabour
Mammograms miss up to 50% of Breast Cancers in women with very Dense Breasts.
It missed mine!
If I had ever been told I had #Densebreasts I would have had a Breast Ultrasound every time. My Cancer would have been found earlier, node negative better prognosis
My Mammograms 2007, 2010, 2011, 2013, 2015 ALL showed I had Extremely Dense Breasts My GP knew Radiologists knew but I didn't know because they didn't tell me
Breast Density is not palpable and (Mammographic) Breast Density can only be determined by Mammogram
