1/ "Fits at Chess" might seem like a punchline, but it's a real health concern 🧠. I've been exploring research papers on the negative effects of #Chess on well-being, societies, and ecosystems, and found the first report of chess triggering #epilepsy from 1965. #NorwayChess Image
2/ These cases fall into a category of reflex #epilepsy - seizures are activated by specific, identifiable triggers. Such triggers can be external (flashing lights, hot water 🚿), internal (emotions, thought 💭), or a mix of both.

3/ Among reflex #epilepsies, the most common are those triggered by visual stimuli or light changes (1 in 4,000). Much rarer triggers include eating 🍎, music 🎵(1:10 M), writing ✍️, orgasm 💋 and even lying. #Chess, other #boardgames, and #cards can also trigger seizures. Image

1/4 Here we go! Chess eats your 🧠 gray matter!
"Grey matter volume and cortical thickness were reduced in chess players compared with those of control men in the occipitotemporal junction and precunei." #Chess #chesspunks #NorwayChess Image
2/4 Chess is a silent "killer" of 🧠 cortex locally.

💡Who holds the record for the thinnest 🧠 cortex among chess players in history? Will collective chess 🧠 solve this mystery despite the thinning? Retweet! 🔁

3/4 🧩 Stay tuned for more revelations from a treasure trove of almost 1000 scientific papers exploring the mental and other challenges of chess players. As a chess player myself, I hope for 1 or 2 papers highlighting the benefits of the game. #Chess #chesspunks #NorwayChess 🔁 Image

Memorizing openings from a ready-made pgn is often ineffective.

You might remember the lines for a few days, but in the long term, you’ll forget what you learned.

Instead, here’s a 4-step process to MEMORIZE OPENINGS and NOT forget the lines for a long time:

🧵
#chesspunks Image
Step 1 – STUDY WITH 107% ATTENTION!🎯

Be fully focused when studying!

Whether you’re watching videos, reading a book, or working with someone, pay 107% attention to the source you’re learning from.

Make opening files later.

As GM Vladimir Akopian shares his philosophy: Image
Step 2 – CREATE YOUR FILES 📁

- If your memory is great, watch the entire course, then create your pgn files.

- If your memory is weak, add the opening variations one video at a time.

But always pay attention to what you’re learning, and only then create the opening file.

This will be a series of tweets where I will recommend chess book titles for adult improvers, typically ratings below 2000 (still a wide range).
Opening: I am a big fan of chessable courses but mainly the ones where you can interact with the author, so check if he/she typically responds on the discussion forum within 1-2 days so it doesn't stop your study progress
Other good opening books are easy guides, step by step and starting out series. Openng books/courses should focus on ideas and concepts, there should not be a lot of move memorization.

Dear #chesspunks is there a need to combine book titles with indicative ratings based on our own reading experience? If there is a lot of enthusiasm I could run a pilot
I would post a poll for 1 title with different ratings (e.g. >1400 >1600 >2000), below I put my own impressions (if any) and the result of the poll together with the book title I can add to a pinned tweet series.
Besides voting you can also reply in text to inform the other readers of your impressions. The system is of course not water proof and I also don't know if there is a lot of interest for this. So vote below and feel free to leave comment!

How long does it take to learn chess, #chesspunks?

Playing chess every day for the last 12 months, took me from 900 to 1600 ELO on @lichess

This week I played a casual tournament against some 2000s and took third place, with a performance rating of 1839 🧵 Image
That was the day my rapid rating broke 1600

This coworking space in Bulgaria ran 5 tournaments, and I participated in all of them

Feb: 926, won 1 game
March: 1210, won 2 games
July: 1285, won 3 games
August: 1324, won 3 games

This week, at 1621, I won 4.5 coworking bansko
That first tournament in Feb was only two weeks after I first started chess

I had been working next to @vesper8, who spent most of the day coding and jumped into bullet chess games during compiles

he caught me shoulder-surfing and asked if I wanted to learn how to play

1) In studying Karpov's games, there are two qualities that stand out (among many things). First, his sense of timing of when to sacrifice/push and when to play more quietly. Second, his precision when it comes to preventing his opponent's counterplay...
2) As an example, look at this position with white to play: #chesspunks
3) You may have correctly guessed that the thematic 1.Rxh5! is the winning move. His notes (from his Best Games book) give us more insight as 1.Ng3 (looking to deflect the knight) is too slow and runs into 1...Bg4! (e.g. 2.fxg4 Nxg4 and the queen is trapped).

I created this position to highlight the chess concepts of "pins" and "forced moves"

Here, it's white to move.
#chesspunks [Site "Chess.com"] [Result "*"] [SetUp &
First, the black Queen is pinned to her King. If she moves, he dies. So she must stay in place or the player find some other way to eliminate the threat.

The pin isn't immediate though... because the white Rook is in the way. But, if that Rook moves, it's on! [Site "Chess.com"] [Result "*"] [SetUp &
So 1. Rxa6!

The King is in check, and the only piece within reach to capture it is the Black Queen...but she's pinned! So black only has the single "forced move" of 1..Kb8.

But, the party isn't over yet. [Site "Chess.com"] [Result "*"] [SetUp &

If you want to build your chess skills, I highly recommend lichess.org/practice.

Lichess is 100% free and practice exercises are great. #chesspunks
Don't worry about solving every puzzle. A lot of the ones I encountered were really hard to see.

I'd also advise pairing your practice with googling the tactic when you struggle with it.

Understanding what a "fork" is in chess makes it easier to find them.
I've also been explaining to my 10 year old that one of the most powerful tools to make tactics work is understanding the chess concept of "forced moves", where you can guarantee your opponent has to react a certain way. It almost promises you multiple moves for yourself.

1. @lichess study feature, there can't be anything better as an alternative to chessbase. You can import any pgn or FEN of any position to analyse it. CONT
#chesspunks
2. @ChessvisionAI extension. Imagine watching a chess video or analysing a position and you want to set the position up in lichess study but you don't have FEN and it takes ages to set up the board. Now you can scan the position from the screen and copy the FEN to the study!
3. Chess com game collection.
If you scan the position via chessvision and the position is from a certain game you can acess that game on chesscom with one click and quickly copy the pgn to the lichess study. No need to search it on chessgames.
