Would you eat this - the Christmas eve-eve traditional Cornish stargazy pie? There are many recipes, usually involving potato, and sometimes sand eels, mackerel, herring or dogfish, but to be a true stargazy pie the intact pilchard heads must be placed looking up at the sky,
before going in the oven.

The dish is most associated with the village of Mousehole and its annual celebration on 23rd December, known locally as Tom Bawcock’s eve.

Nature is amazing. Science is pretty cool too. Sometimes I still get totally WOWED by both. My @Guardian exclusive this morning is one of those moments. Let me explain....🧵 1/
So, first off....did you know that scallops have eyes?! 👀 Up to 200, in fact. Even as a biologist living by the sea, I did not know this until last week. Pretty surprising but that's not the exciting bit. 2/
Meanwhile, some clever marine scientists @FishtekMarine in #Devon design tech to reduce impact of fisheries on the marine envt.... they invented 'potlights' - small LED packs - that could replace fish bait in crab/lobster pots. 3/

Thread: 1/5 Ken was recruited in 1943 when he was just 16. He thinks he knew too much & so his father had to recruit him. Their OB was in a spoil heap at a nearby quarry, although they mainly used it as a store.
2/5 There was an elderly couple that overlooked the OB who would have had to have been ‘dealt’ with first as they had seen Patrol members entering and digging the OB - he didn’t know who was as given the task but expected it to absolutely done if necessary
3/5 They had weapons practice in the quarry. And only knew of other Patrols as they tested each other in the local area (gaining access to ammo dumps etc).

1/- AUSTRALIA ARE THEY LYING?
These video scenes of #brutal #LawEnforcement are from around the world and Australia figures prominently.
It is #dehumanising and mentally debilitating to see this and to comprehend the #inhumanity
Is it right to assault citizens like this?
2/- AUSTRALIA ARE THEY LYING
The #G7summit was a cosy affair. Social distancing for the cameras and free-for-all off-it. #Scomo was in the midst of this #Cornwall retreat to plan the next phase of #Lockstep.
Do any of them appear concerned about the “pannddemmic” ?
3/- AUSTRALIA ARE THEY LYING?
#Scomo returns from his #G7Summit2021 all buoyed in #Lockstep and then NSW goes into #Lockdown followed by restrictions in other states.
Do you see fingerprints on this?
Is #GladysCluster trying too hard to convince?
See where we are on cases curve??

No.. it can't possibly be due to some incompetent prick inviting the world and his wife to the narrowest strip of England.
Or due to govt failing to restrict travel & protect SW England yet again.
Here's some truth: a THREAD of unfiltered truth and fact.

This map shows the increases in infections...
...and also the route driven by holidaymakers traveling to Cornwall. At Exeter most take the A30 to Cornwall and you can see how Covid case increase did the same.
More to follow... Image
The same map with hotspots highlighted. As you can see, Cornwall is a hotspot hundreds of miles from any other, meaning the new cases were caused not by local diffusion but by insertion - ie carried in person specifically from one terminal point to another. There's more... Image

After an long hiatus caused by a ridiculous workload, it’s time for another #TetZoocryptomegathread, in which I examine the backstory to a cryptozoological photo or bit of film. This time, we look at the Lake Dakataua ‘Migo’ monster footage of 1994. Warning: LONG thread ahead…
I’ll tell you now that this case is complex. It involves crocodile systematics and behaviour, the ‘surviving archaeocete’ hypothesis, mosasaur life appearance as depicted in #palaeoart, and the world of the pre-internet cryptozoological community…
What is the #Migo?... I hear (some of) you cry. Also known as the Masali or Migaua, it’s an alleged mystery creature of New Britain’s Lake Dakataua, said to be about 4m long, and to be a flippered, long-tailed, long-snouted, aquatic, predatory animal…

Today saw HRH the Princess Royal visit our #MonstersoftheDeep exhibition, years in the making, at @TheNMMC #Falmouth. I'm guest curator & worked with the museum's Stuart Slade, @tammy_horton of the National Oceanography Centre - and others - in bringing it all together. Thread... ImageImage
#MonstersoftheDeep weaves together medieval beliefs about sea monsters, the scientific discovery of deep-sea life, the cryptozoological movement, and modern exploration and discovery. We have LOADS of stuff on display, much of it for the first time...
We open with a section on medieval maps... did people of those times believe in the sea monsters shown on maps like the Carta Marina, or were other forces at play? Jenny hanivers, mermaids, sea monks, sea bishops, sea unicorns and more occupy this part of the exhibition... ImageImageImage

The #UKGovernment Torture Report

This is a very short overview of what the #UKAuthorities have done in the case.

#PraiseTheLORD #PraiseGod #Borisjohnson #Downingstreet #PritiPatel #UKParliament #Dailymail
In 2005, I set up a business selling CDs, namely mixtape CDs after graduating from Uni.

In 2006, my home was raided & my business was stopped. They said the CDs I was selling were in breach of copyright.
It was a complete shock as the exact same CDs I was selling were prevalent on most high streets and supermarkets. They were selling in their thousands in places such as #Tesco & #HMV. And #Woolworths were the actual UK Distributor of these CDs.

With the County in lockdown and knowing he'd be home, I took the chance to catch a few moments with @Recluseuk/@oldsamuelband lead singer/guitarist, @BrittRecluseuk learning that it maybe it wasn't Lisa Simpson that peaked his interest in music...

#lockdown #StayHome #interview
Do you remember when you were first aware of music?

BR: One of the earliest memories involving music that I have is travelling in my dad’s car to a holiday somewhere in England listening to Freddie Mercury’s I Was Born to Love You, I was pretty much raised on #Queen & #Elvis
BR: I must have been around 4-5 years old.

Are you a still fan?

BR: They are indelibly linked to so memories that I’m definitely fond of them. There are specific songs by each that make my trousers fly away, I look at you, ‘It’s Late’ and Innuendo..

#PrehistoryOfPenwith: A Thread

The end of #Cornwall where I live, #Penwith, is incredibly rich in prehistory.

I know very little about our standing stones/circles and fogous so this thread's here for me to learn a bit more and share my photos.

Please contribute!
#megalithic ImageImageImage
I'll start things off with Tregeseal East Stone Circle ('The Dancing Stones'). 19 stones, once part of a system of 2 or even 3 circles.

Under Carn Kenidjack 'The Hooting Cairn' with Tregeseal Holed Stones nearby. A fantastic place.

#PrehistoryOfPenwith
#megalithic Image
Boskednan Circle ('The Nine Maidens')

19 stones, possibly part of the Carn Galver processional route.

Sometimes overlooked due to being near the more famous Mên-an-Tol but one of my favourites. An hour here at dusk, alone, is really very special.

Sharing some #Cornish printed heritage from @britishlibrary for #StPiransDay with Andrew Boorde’s ‘tourist guide’ to the British Isles printed in 1540.

“In Cornwall is two speches, the one is naughty englyshe, and the other is cornyshe”

Some phrases to follow ...
C.71.b.29
Boorde’s ‘fyrst boke of the introduction of knowledge’ was to, ‘teache a man to speake parte of all maner of languages, and to knowe the vsage and fashion of al maner of countreys. And know the moste parte of all maner of coynes of money, the whych is currant in euery region”
