If there's one lesson you can take from this thread, and every back-and-forth between people fighting over who gets to dictate what books are in public K12 libraries, it's that taxpayer-funded education is immoral from the outset. Read on to find out why...1/
1/If you claim it's moral to take money from people at the business end of a gun (try not paying your taxes), how do you justify telling the people you've taken it from they have ZERO say in how it's spent? Especially on the education if THEIR CHILDREN?
2/And before you get all cute and say this is why School Choice ™️ is great, remember nothing has changed except who gets to decide where the stolen funds go. The power to define "education" and to regulate who MAY get those funds, even from YOU, stays with the same govt!

During the horror of last week, you would be forgiven for missing a very welcome development: the new executive order from @POTUS on policing. Read on.
On the anniversary of the brutal murder of George Floyd, the President signed an order including a new federal use-of-force standard, database for police misconduct, a ban on chokeholds, and restrictions on no-knock warrants, among other reforms. whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/…
These changes are closely aligned with the @CouncilonCJ's Policing Task Force recommendations, which was directed by @NLVigne. I'm so proud of that influential work, which carefully examined the evidence on which reforms have worked, and which haven't. counciloncj.org/tfp/

Difference in coverage between the NYT (left) and the Post (right). NYT dismisses family's fear and instead of quoting sister more jumps to "crime is rare," and quotes random #defund supporter who blames policing and a not yet happened Supreme Court decision, naturally.
Does the victim's family's fear really need to be balanced by a man who "blamed the erosion in safety on the focus on police tactics." What is his relevance/expertise? And of course he is a 32-year-old white guy in Brooklyn who works for WeWork and has been in NYC for ~8 years.

Crime is number one concern for black adults. Police doesn't even make the list. If this shocks you, ponder why you're so out of touch. Maybe even pipe down a bit on what you think are other people's priorities. There will be no NYT or NPR story on this.

I mean, feel free to hate police as much as you want. It's a free country. But please don't hate police for other people you don't know and probably have a much more nuanced position on law enforcement than you do.
It's hard to imagine any other concern so important to (and lethal to) black Americans -- violence -- that white progressives would be not only be in denial about but actively work to worsen with simplistic #defund police BS.

New @Superstruc episode just dropped!

✨We Have Never Been Neoliberal, What Now?✨

Please listen & share.

(Description in thread below.)

moneyontheleft.org/2021/10/20/28-…
In this episode, co-hosts @orangeasm & @MaxSeijo argue that the pandemic not only killed neoliberalism as a tacit ideological formation; it also revealed how neoliberal truisms have never captured the actual causal mechanisms and potentials that defined the past 50 years. 2/7
Fleshing out these claims, Naty and Maxx journey through the work of rockstar economic historian @adam_tooze, focusing in particular on his widely-hailed recent book, Shutdown: How Covid Shook the World’s Economy (2021). 3/7

“You have a 16-year-old kid arrested three times in 90 days with guns,” Shea said. “Where is the outrage and where are the hearings to say, ‘What’s going on?’”

OCFS (NYC family services) already has a budget of $3.8 billion. That's real money.
nydailynews.com/new-york/nyc-c…
Gil-Medrano is the 16-year-old (as opposed to the 13-year-old victim): "Sunday was the second time that Gil-Medrano had been shot. On July 7, 2020, the teen was shot in Crotona... Gil-Medrano would not help investigators as he recovered."
Together, NYC Family Services (OCFS) and Homeless Services (DHS) have a larger budget then the NYPD. That's something. #defund

The group is also demanding investigation into @SeattleOPA decisions in all investigations undertaken by that office in 2020. @KIRORadio

LAPD rally today at the LAPD Academy— hello Proud Boy. LAPD breaks up #fight between a Proud Boy and BLM. Proud Boy assumes BLM is all fatherless and finds that hilarious (noted at the end of video)

Clearly Proud Boys are not “okay” with homosexuals. At LAPD rally today, Proud Body makes homophobic statement and tells me to go home because I’m a “little girl”

So by my count, the #CALeg sent 9 bills to @GavinNewsom meant to address #policing concerns in the wake of #GeorgeFloyd and others—and killed 10. If I were in a police lobby, I'd be pretty satisfied with this result. Here's why:
The 9 that survived mostly speed up what police agencies were already doing (banning chokeholds) or offer opt-in reforms, like grants to set up non-police emergency response systems, request-only DOJ reviews and county-initiated sheriff oversight. 3 things:
1. @GavinNewsom hasn't said whether he supports the lone #defund bill. 2. Neither advocates nor police believe the DOJ will prosecute more officers. 3. The politicians who would empower their sheriff watchdogs w/supboena powers are often afraid of their sheriffs' political base.

☎️TKARONTO ALTERNATIVES TO CALLING 911☎️
Save these numbers in your phone!
In our carceral society there are no clear alternatives to calling 911. Even for fire or EMS, there is always a risk of police responding.
(1/7)
We hope to help folks understand their options for social services and crisis support in Toronto, beyond the police. We must continue to build community alternatives for policing and push to #abolitionthepolice and #abolishprisons.
(2/7)
We want to acknowledge the harmful legacy of social services & social work in "Canada" and the ways that these systems continue to cause harm. We’ve linked some articles about this harmful legacy in our Instagram highlights, along with other resources like The Access Point.

1) I have seen several people that I have great respect for say that racism underlies a newly circulating poll that shows support for BLM but substantially fewer people supporting the demand to “defund the police”. Of course, it’s the US and racism underlies most things
2) but I think in this case, there is more going on. The first is that this is a new demand among most people. Two months ago no one, other than organizers, had heard of “defund the police”, so it’s a new idea.
3) and like most new ideas, people need to think about it and understand it’s meaning before fully agreeing with it. Most of the media discussion concerning #defund has been reactive and in response to the right’s mischaracterization of it.

Not going to link to it but the Daily Mail’s second attack in a month on one of the BBC’s most prominent young Black journalists ought to be a wake-up call for those within and beyond the BBC who don’t realise the peril we’re in right now. (Thread)
The story comes from Guido Fawkes, a far-right website which has debased our media even further and which regularly offers dog-whistles (and worse) to its readers - check the comments on pretty much any story and marvel at the fact that those are the _moderated_ replies.
Guido is a leading supporter of #DefundTheBBC, a real and growing phenomenon - it’s gone from the fringes of far-right discourse to the centre of the Conservative Party and ‘mainstream’ right-wing media. It’s rooted in the idea that the BBC has a hopeless left-wing bias.

Waking up in restraints to realize he was suspected of being involved in the shooting that nearly killed him was bad enough for 38yo Jermaine Welch. But he hadn't anticipated learning LAPD might have been the ones that shot him.
la.streetsblog.org/2020/07/13/bys…
He'd been out making deliveries on the night of June 3 when he came upon a crowd at Broadway/Manchester. He heard someone yell "F*ck the cops!", saw a bright light, and heard a burst of shots. Then the intersection exploded in gunfire. Image
He knew he'd been hit and he had to get out of there. His hand was mangled - he'd thrown it in front of his face to protect his head - and the bullet that had burrowed in through his ribs had damaged a lung. ImageImageImage

Follow my logic:

City council members (not me) say more security needed at West Indian Parade/Jouvert, due to recurring violence(wnyc.org/story/council-…)

Same members vote to cut the funding specifically for police OT at these events 3 years later.

1/3
2/3
This event is the first of the fiscal year, the largest OT annual expense, and the statistically most violent. I suggest it shouldn’t happen because of the cuts (that I voted AGAINST, they voted FOR)

= Borelli is the bad guy for raining on the parade.
🙄
3/3
Meanwhile, if the events move forward. They will need 3,400 cops. (Again, they requested this presence in past)

This means that either:
1 resources r pulled from other pcts all weekend
2 the OT will be funded, reversing the cuts, proving the #Defund was all BS to begin with.
