STALIN’den kaçan Kırım Türkü Şefika Hanım ve Kemal Bey’in kaderinde, ülkelerinde değil ama II. Dünya Savaşı’nda mülteci oldukları Avrupa’da tanışmak vardı. Şefika Hanım ‘kalemi güçlü’ bir Kırım asilzadesi, Kemal Bey ise başarılı bir makine mühendisiydi. 1947’de
Avusturya’da kaldıkları kampta ellerinde sadece bir bavul ve küçük bebekleri İlber vardı. Prof. Dr. İlber Ortaylı’yı dünyanın sayılı tarihçileri arasına sokan hayat böyle bir aile öyküsüyle başlamıştı. Babasının ona ‘Çalış, oku, öğren, kafanda olsun’ demesi de boşuna değildi:

Bulgaristan’daki bir Türk köyünde dünyaya gelen Safiye Ademoğlu Türkyılmaz (35), 12 yaşındayken ailesiyle birlikte İstanbul’a göç etti.
ODTÜ Ekonomi Bölümü’nü bitirdi. Son sınıfta “gökyüzü sevdasını” gerçekleştirme kararı aldı.
