"If we look at the temperatures at which most biological #enzymes fall apart, it's upward of 50º — but most enzymatic activity fails well below that. What's causing this decline? The Standard Model doesn't account for this."

Here's why #GlobalWarming is not just going to be "great for plants":

Thermodynamic constraints on living systems mean rising temperatures affect diffusion and transport of molecules across membranes, and too much heat messes with #photosynthesis.

In this opinion paper @RMedzhitov went back to drawing board to update his views on #allergy and how it could develop.

#immunology

I read this paper and here is my take on it

1/
@RMedzhitov Why focus on allergy? b/c allergy is a paradox. The allergy we recognize is a completely maladaptive response and has no protective role whatsoever. It is not clear why do we even need IgE

2/
@RMedzhitov So, some 10 years ago or so, @RMedzhitov started to suggest that #allergy is an intrinsic property of a certain type of #antigens, many of them with enzymatic function (enzymes). 3/

The body has a glucose-based economy because that is the main fuel that circulates & what the brain prefers. This is not an argument to eat refined sugar, which is clearly bad, it’s just a fact. DNA & RNA are built from forms of ribose. How do cells convert glucose to ribose? /1
They use NADP+ & the pentose phosphate pathway (PPP). This also produces NADPH and the power to build cellular materials and signaling molecules with the captured electrons #redox #wondersofnature #biochem #NADtwitter /2
No synthetic organic chemist of any skill level can convert glucose to ribose-5-phosphate with the efficiency of the humblest bacterium #enzymes #coenzymes #metabolism #NAD
