Altruism is not only good for society––in an outbreak, it can also be self-serving. A thread on our modeling paper medrxiv.org/content/10.110… w/ @ivan_specht @KianSani @codeanticode and thanks @EmilyAnthes piece @NYT nytimes.com/2021/03/24/hea… 1/16
COVID-19 made clear that diagnostic testing is a highly effective tool to curb viral spread. A positive test result informs infectious individuals that they & their close contacts must self-isolate, reducing transmission. #covid19 #testing 2/16
As well-endowed institutions––e.g. schools, workplaces––sought to revive operations, they turned inwards, deploying vast resources to test their own members regularly, often w/clinical-grade tests, while surrounding communities suffered testing shortages & delays. 3/16

Real-time RT-PCR (@WHO gold standard) is complex and requires technical equipment and skilled human resources. Deploying a military mobile lab for temporary missions in the south is a good step, but still, testing capacity remains limited: only 24,406 tests performed as of 02/05.
Antigen and antibody rapid tests provide a less costly and faster delivery of results compared to RT-PCR. However, before these tests can be used, it must be acknowledged that they serve different roles and thus need to be used in different scenarios.

I need your help. I want to know from modellers in all areas what we need from a (any) Government #COVIDー19 model (which will predict numbers and timing of infections and will drive national policy). Please share and we will croudsource a requirements list
I'd like to crowd source our requirements for the model (parameters, validation, assumptions, code) - and I'd like to help from all #modelling ( #simulation / #economic / #policy / #epidemiological / #behavioral ) experts in putting together our requirements. I'll start.
I want to know what objective function is being maximized. @MattHancock
