Last night, I was at @WVCBP’s “More Money for Who” presentation given by @sethano at the Ohio County Pubic Library. Here are some of the main take aways. @folkreporter #folkreporters 1/ Image
Some brief background first:
-Personal Income Tax (PIT)- makes up 40% of WV’s annual revenue.
-Fiscal Year (FY)- ends June 30 and starts July 1, FY 2024 starts July 1.
-Flat Budget- roughly the same amount budgeted every year (no budget increases) 2/
-Severance Tax- taxes collected from coal and natural gas extraction, highly volatile.

The May 16 @CityofWheeling #CityCouncil meeting was unlike any other, due in large part to it's high attendance. Many came out in support of the LGBTQ+ and the upcoming Pride on the Plaza event. More than 60 people filled the chambers. Here's what you missed:

The Friendlier City Project, a Wheeling non-profit with the mission to build and foster a thriving #LGBTQ+ community, asked supporters to come out in support of the June 10 Pride on the Plaza event. This was to rebuke a woman who speaks against LGBTQ+ people often.

The Wheeling City Council held its first meeting of May on Tuesday, May 2. It has received statewide attention after a known bigot had their six-minute tirade turned into a full-length story by a legacy paper.

MAJOR UPDATE: @DEPWV Chief Communications Officer confirms one storage tank was found during @WVDOT @CityofWheeling Streetscape Project. @MillerEnvGroup has been contracted by Triton Construction to perform testing on water and sand found in tank. An odor of diesel was detected.
.@DEPWV says no immediate threat is posed to the Ohio River, but no test results have been submitted. Work on removal was completed on April 17. Comment from @CityofWheeling has not been received, but the Public Relations Specialist confirmed she is working on it w/ City Manager

First thing to note: admittance to the City-County building often involves removing your belongings to be scanned, and walking through a medal detector. I was informed by an officer “no one is at post,” and this safety check was not conducted.

First, in my estimation there were roughly 30 people in attendance, including members of the public, city government officials, and media. Apart from myself there was no masking. There appeared to me no COVID-19 safety precautions in place, there was space for some distancing
