On Kinzhals, Patriots, etc.

What can be intercepted with which means depends on quite a number of factors and their mutual effects: where the incoming missile is launched from, where its target is, where the "anti-missile" launcher is...

1/
...and, perhaps most importantly, where the defending side's radars are (detecting, targeting, etc.).

How coordinated the "incoming" and "outgoing" salvos are also very important.

2/
On Kinzhal as a "real hypersonic weapon" I hoped everything was decided back in 2018: speed above 5 Mach, maneuvering inside the atmosphere, a significant "non-ballistic" part of the trajectory - bingo, this is it. That said...

IRGC-ASF Commander BG Hajizadeh has told press that Iran has developed a hypersonic missile that can manoeuvre at extremely high speed both inside and outside the atmosphere. He said among its capabilities will be to not just bypass, but target missile defence systems.
#hyperhype
He emphasised that the missile will be able to evade both endoatmospheric and exoatmospheric ABM systems, and that it will be able to destroy any target, *especially* ABM systems. He described this as a generational leap that won't be countered for decades.
This is interesting because Iran has described what we think is a missile with a HGV before. That was Kheybar-Shekan, and it had a MaRV-type triconic HGV.

Nice #hyperhype X lethal autonomy from Sandia circa 2019.

I've been arguing publicly that autonomy has some role for hypersonic weapons since around early 2019 as well:)

A thread on Zmeyevik, new RU hypersonic weapon reported by TASS earlier this week ().
Looks like it was under development for a while, although there were no tests mentioned or observed, which, does not mean that there were no tests at all.
1/
Making fast AShM is quite traditional for SU and RU school, and the ballistic missile is a good option (also, R-27K SLASBM). Still, given its range and speed one needs a serious ISR and targeting capabilities, and also terminal guidance.

2/
Maneuverable reentry vehicles (MaRV) and hypersonic glide vehicles (HGV) as a subtype of those make sense to be a primary payload type in this case, however there are obvious gaps in Russian ISR capabilities anyway.

New name for the Russian hypersonic weapons geeks: Zmeyevik. According to TASS sources, an anti-ship ballistic missile with HGV payload for the Navy coastal missile units, to strike large surface targets, somewhat like DF-21D or DF-26.

tass.ru/armiya-i-opk/1…

#hyperhype
Sources claim that the project has been under development for a while already.

"Zmeyevik" is a kind of serpentinite rock, as usual. But also this thing often found in bathrooms. And in moonshine makers:) ImageImageImage
On a sad note, nothing new about targeting for such weapons. Also traditionally.

We have a new 3-day series of defense-focused meetings held by Putin in Sochi. Today the focus is long-term development, and we learned that:
- Nuclear triad capabilities have been enhanced
- S-500 tests nearing completion
- armed forces carried out everything planned for 2020
We have a readout: kremlin.ru/events/preside…

- Kalibr-armed ships contribute to the expansion of the Navy capabilities
- Tsirkon mentioned as explicitly ship-based system, final stages of state trials
- 70+% of Air-Space Forces Air Defense rgts re-armed w/ S-400

2/
- S-500 trials are being succesfully completed, deliveries to the forces to start soon
- risks and military threats are present, so refinement. development and re-armament of the armed forces will continue
- military industry and design bureaues will receive support

13th MD in Orenburg deployed another Avangard missile system w/ hypersonic glide winged vehicle. Support equipment, incl. transporter, looks rather oldschool.

#hyperhype
Might be safe to say that now to there are at least three nuclear-armed HGVs on alert, with at least four silo launchers.

"A dual-use Common Hypersonic Glide Body would close gaps in U.S. theater deterrence capabilities and offer scalable deployment options to assure allies."

“How are we going to employ hypersonic weapons? What do they bring to the battlefield? What are our considerations for planning and executing and integrating them in a fight?"
"How do we understand the target, where it’s at, where it may be going, and make sure we can we can close that kill chain on a particular target?"

All good questions.

Another important thought: “I think right now we’re learning. I think the ARRW is going to give us that first opportunity to learn.”

That's why early IOC of Kinzhal and Avangard is a big deal. Not because those shift the strategic balance, but because "an opportunity to learn".

BrahMos news:
- BrahMos-NG to be complete around 2023 (incl. flight tests)
- -NG will be mated with more platforms
- Hypersonic BrahMos will be developed with 2 milestones, first with M5-M6, than M7+; engine active during all flight.

"Extended range" BrahMos tests planned for 2020, per Obnosov.

tass.ru/armiya-i-opk/9…
More BrahMos from Russian co-director:
- indeed 2 steps for the hypersonic one, M4-M5 around 2024-2025, M6-M7 around 2026-2027 (very convinent to track:))
- some elements already tested
- ~40% of orders go to ground troops, ~30% to the Air Force and Navy (w/ coastal units)

There's also a video (flash at the moment) with some nice angles...
One can hear "battle duty w/4 aircraft" clearly. ImageImageImageImage
Fun fact: Kinzhal operations are explicitly mentioned in the release sent out to the media, but on the MoD website: militarynews.ru/story.asp?rid=… Image

Fresh #hyperhype with a futuristic flavor by yours truly for @ndos_ru issue: HYPERSONIC FUTURISM.

Full issue: dfnc.ru/wp-content/upl… ImageImage
Silver bullets and super-duper missiles are all over the media, but those are evolutionary developments, although some of them are challenging. But challenges are there both for the 'attacker' and 'defender', and these weapons and ways to counter are extremely expensive.
Web-version of my new piece on Hypersonic Futurism available, automated translation might do the trick.

A number of useful public statements both from @USArmsControl Billingslea and @mfa_russia Ryabkov to prepare the ground Vienna event released, so let's make a thread!

1/
For @NAR Billigslea was pretty clear that curently the US beign open to sort things out with Russia and thus prepare a framework for Chinese involvement: asia.nikkei.com/Editor-s-Picks…

And #NewSTART can be extended!:)

2/ ImageImage
This one is even better: asia.nikkei.com/Editor-s-Picks…:

B. pointed to a midrange, non-nuclear, ground-launched cruise missile under development..this weapon is "exactly the kind of defensive capability that countries such as Japan will want and will need for the future"

...apart from the point about Barguzin, of course. Rail-mobile systems have no added value.

On a more serious note, some updates on Chinese #hyperhype-related stuff, scramjet flavor:
- 600 sec scramjet ground-burn
- “world’s first systematic investigation into the effect of hydrocarbon fuel state change on the performance and stability of supersonic combustion”
-"directing fuel to the surface of the most heated components...as the combustion chamber...with precise control, the fuel could absorb and dissipate the heat. The heat, in turn, would turn the fuel into a gas of carbon and hydrogen molecules eager to meet the oxygen and burn"

Probably some people are wondering what do I think about the most recent #hyperhype a la Russe, I mean TASS source claiming test of some hypersonic missile from Tu-22M3 long-range bomber for its future modenized Tu-22M3M version. (tass.com/defense/1154995). Let's make a thread!
1/
I am lazy and won't add links, but feel free to ask for those, as I may be in more helping mood some other day.
So, first idea (incl. by some idiots in RU media) - rumors about Kinzhal mated w/ Backfire are true! Well, it is the easiest thought, but...very improbable.

2/
MiG-31 is one of its kind. It can fly fast and high, and launch huge missiles. Still, the "-K", which is part of "Kinzhal" system most likely suffered a lot in terms of performance. Taking off, flying, launching or landing with a thing this big is a challenge in itself.

More reporting on planned re-arming of the 712 rgt in Kansk (Krasnoyarsk region) with MiG-31K. Numerous mentions of "Kh-47M2" fictional designator do not add to credibility, but anyway:
- special program of pilot re-training to start by the end of 2021
- re-arming by 2024

1/
- MiG-31 mentioned as 'first stage' for Kinzhal, that allows to "start the attack" from 12-15 km altitude
- Missile flies most of its path at the stratosphere border
- sophisticated terminal maneuvering to penetrated defenses and increase accuracy

2/
- MiG-31K has new equipment, increased fuel load and comms equipment to receive targeting data
- 2000+ km range, 'guaranteed' defeat of both fixed and mobile targets

Lots of stuff said elsewhere over last few weeks, or even earlier.
5 ICBM launches in 2019 (3xPL, 2xKY),6 planned for 2020 (5xPL, 1x??).
KY test range modernization completed in 2019: new set of measuring and comms equipment, real-time information for Central Command Post.

2/
#NewSTART mentioned A LOT:
- ceilings as the only numbers that can be disclosed on SRF (~60% of delivery vehicles and warheads).
- ~70% of 18 annual inspections by the US are on SRF objects
- expressed hope that "common sense" will prevail with regard to US stance on extension

Some thoughts on RS-26 as alleged designator for Avangard missile system with gliding winged reentry vehicle. (source of claim: ).

#hyperhype

1/
What we know?

1) Avangard is being introduced into #NewSTART because its booster is basically an ICBM: UR-100NUTTKh/RS-18X/SS-19 Mod...
2) It was mentioned as SS-19 Mod-X-4 in US NPR 2018
3) RS-26 is/was a designator for Rubezh "light" ICBM prototype within NewSTART process

2/
4) AFAIK there were some references in Russian media and tender documentation, etc. using expressions like "Rubezh-Avangard missile system". Personal theory: it was an umbrella R&D name with emphasis on using more or less existing tech for missile defense penetration...
