As a Zapotec Professor, born and raised in Koreatown, I am appalled to hear LA City Council members blatant racial attacks. Many of us Indigenous Oaxacans, however, are not surprised to hear this racial violence from non-Indigenous Latinx and Mexicans! It happens EVERYDAY!
I began my research on Indigenous Oaxacan experiences in the US because of my family's and my pueblos (not "villages") transnational autonomous practices across #LosAngeles & #Oaxaca. I concentrate on women and children precisely because of the racial violence we have
endured by Latinx & non-Indigenous mestizo Mexicans, yet that remains invisible by most. Being called "Pinche India fea!," "India Maria Baja del cerro"... and the number of spitts from my Latinx peers growing up attending #LAUSD from elementary to h.s.

Ultimate thread of how @UTLAnow & @CecilyMyartCruz mishandled #covid at the expense of the kids of @LASchools #LAUSD living in #LosAngeles

Did employee lawsuit get Los Angeles Unified School District #LAUSD to back down from (i.e., delay) imposing employee COVID-19 vaccine mandate? Why aren’t more employees suing employers over these mandates? What happens if (i.e., when) vaccines get full FDA approval?

Despite a setback in Bridges v Houston Methodist, lawsuits still seem to be a viable avenue of recourse for at-will employees who don’t want to comply w/employer COVID-19 vaccine mandates but also don’t want to lose their jobs.

In a recent Twitter thread I showed that although 4 states (MT, AR, UT, OR) have provided some protection for employees agst employer COVID-19 vaccine mandates, there is great resistance from both Demo & Repub state leaders to ban such employer mandates

1/24 My second big win in court against a charter school corporation. It was also a major victory over their #CCSA trade association, which tried to use this case to carve out immunity to the #CPRA. I represented @DotKohlhaas in this action. @DianeRavitch
2/24 My first win was a year ago as third chair in a suit to overturn a wrongful expulsion of a student of color. The PUC charter chain (of convicted felon Ref Rodriguez fame) violated that student's due process rights. Violated isn't a strong enough word for what they did.
3/24 PUC unilaterally changed the charges at the appeals hearing and branded the child as a terrorist in his permanent record. Under the tutelage of the brilliant partners at the firm (lawyer4children.com), plus sage advice from @DrPrestonGreen, we built a strong case.

Some context about @CAgovernor's school reopening plan: the plan does have flexibility for schools in #COVID19 hotspots to still get the full amount of reopening money — if they commit to reopen when it's safe. #lausd #caedchat #caleg
According to the @CAgovernor's budget summary and other background docs I've seen, all schools have to do is submit a safety plan — with their unions' sign-off — by Feb. 1

The idea is that schools would then reopen for TK-2 by Feb. 15 … and for TK-5/6 by March 15
But if the case rate is still above 28 per 100k, the school doesn't have to reopen in order to get the reopening incentive grant — which starts at $450/kid

LOS ANGELES: our kids and parents need you TODAY. Please help us #DefundThePolice in our schools. Besides that fact that no child should be policed in a safe place like school, we also have zero dollars available to spend on terrorizing our kids...
Our kids deserve so much more than what they currently get. Imagine going to schools that dont have full time nurses, librarians, art, PE, music, science, tech, counselors. Now tell me why spending 70 million on policing them would ever be the right choice?
If you’re concerned about safety then take a look at the private schools which all have security to keep people OUT and to keep kids safe but not to actively police the students. Imagine if Harvard Westlake was choke holding kids?!! Imagine what the white parents would do?!

NEW: L.A. County's Office of Education (@lacoeinfo) has issued guidance for reopening classrooms in the county's 80 school districts. The 43-page document has a lot of moving parts — so I'll tweet highlights.

FULL DOC: assets.documentcloud.org/documents/6929… #lausd #lbusd #caedchat
As a starting place, @lacoeinfo outlines 3 basic strategies — and districts will have to choose a model "or combination of models that best fits their students' needs"

1⃣ "Face-to-face"
2⃣ "Hybrid" — mix of classroom and #distancelearning
3⃣ "Distance learning"
The guidance is like a choose-your-own adventure.
If schools go with model 1⃣, they'll have to consider one set of implications.
If schools go with model 2⃣, they'll have to consider another.
etc.
