Looking forward to speaking at today's @UWEJournalism event on the sustainability of #LocalNews - specifically, public interest news (as opposed to commercial/tabloid).

The movement to 'save local news' has gained momentum recently - here's how 🧵👇[1/11] Image
#LocalNews has been shelled out & corporate mergers abound in the internet era. Many have been left with inadequate news, if any

As shown by this @TheBristolCable thread (PS I wrote it) independents sprung up to fill gaps - but are surviving, not thriving
[3/11] How might they thrive? A number of us are working behind the scenes to find ways.

The Charitable Journalism Project (@CharitableJP) is trying to convince the government to make it easier for eligible local/community newsrooms to become charities...

@craignewmark IPI’s @jacquipark talked to 30+ media leaders and entrepreneurs who are transitioning legacy media or creating new local voices, half in the #USA and half in #Asia, the Pacific, #Africa and #Europe.

Here are some key insights 👇 2/14
@craignewmark @jacquipark 1. Local news media is the most disrupted sector of the media, the most urgently in need of assistance – and the sector with the greatest potential to form the bedrock for a new, stronger media ecosystem. 3/14

I finally got to go home to Montana this month. I hugged my mom for the first time in a year.

7 days later- I found out I had #COVID-19.

(thread)
I burst into tears when I heard the news. I had mild symptoms at first, so I was shocked.

My first thought was who I had possibly exposed before I showed symptoms, including my mom, who has compromised lungs.
I’m a journalist who has been covering #COVID for months. But no amount of interviews or coverage could have prepared me for the news.

I know that people end up fine in the majority of cases.

I also know the virus is a killer.

#Mahshahr, the heart of #Iran’s petrochemical industry, is known for something else these days: military vehicles, machine guns, security forces firing on protesters. Officials say people were armed, but the residents tell a different story #Novembert19Protests #localnews
#Iranian officials have accused the country’s protesters of being rioters and terrorists. But, a resident of #Mahshahr tells us, “these are hungry people,” people without work, people who can’t see a future for their children.

Recently, President @HassanRouhani said absolute poverty didn’t exist in #Iran. He should pay a visit to these residents of #Mahshahr, many of whom are veterans from the Iran-Iraq war. “Poor people just have to wait to die,” one of them said.

“Core values of #journalism do not change, but practices must change to reflect current reality.” #trustinmedia #ona18 Cannot assume readers understand what we do, how/why we do it. They don’t. Have to stop priding ourselves on being opaque. #transparency @knightfdn #newsliteracy
@knightfdn “Radical #transparency” means we explain methods, decisions in real time. Not after reaction. 2-way communication. Big problem tho: readers conflate news and opinion stories. And media outlets also conflate it too often. #ona18 #trustinmedia #journalism #fakenews
