"WHAT'S AT STAKE when we talk about book bans is student learning and well-being," writes PEN America's @jonfreadom in @USATODAY. "Semantic gymnastics about what is or isn’t a ban is an effort to deny and distract from the problem." #BannedBooks #Reading usatoday.com/story/opinion/…
"To avoid charges of #censorship, school administrators, government officials and groups like Moms for Liberty have taken to calling the results of their efforts 'quarantine' or 'curation' – anything but 'ban.'

This debate is not new." (2/x)
"Writing about book banning for The First Amendment Encyclopedia in 2009, Susan Webb explained, 'Opponents of publications sometimes use the tactic of restricting access rather than calling for the physical removal of books.'" (3/x)

The truth about students learning to #read in #Florida from a REAL #PublicSchool Parent in the wake of the recent #bookbans. A 🧵
📚📚📚📚📚📚
#Teachers in K-8 utilize what’s called the Accelerated
Reader Program. #TruthMatters
arbookfind.com
K-8 Students search for books within their tested reading level that they are interested in reading. Books in the #library are divided up by Book Level so students can easily find a book within their reading level. 📚
Students can also utilize the AR Bookfind website to find books within their tested reading range. With each book they read, they take a test in order for that book to count as a book that they read for class. If they don’t pass the test, they have to take it again. 📚

3/ But let's start at the beginning.

In 2018, Disney spent 20 million dollars helping to pass Amendment 3 which took the ability to expand casino gambling in FL away from the legislature and placed it with the voters.

Well, we have heard from our sources who attended. The heavily partisan puritanical extremist group #MomsForLiberty held their sham forum last night on our public school grounds. Surprising no one, the audience was almost entirely without exception-religious white cis gendered🧵
Representing one demographic of our community. Only four candidates participated. Unsurprisingly, candidates for whom MFL has shown public support. While insisting that this was a non-partisan secular event, only one party was represented and a Christian prayer began the event ✝️
There were standout moments of calling books filth, speaking in fear based vague coded themes of ‘losing our representative government’, more SSO officers. Heavy on right wing Christian nationalist rhetoric, low on substantive policy ideas.

What bothers me most about #momsforliberty in HamCo is not that they posed proudly in front of a flag reminiscent of the Confederate Stars & Bars. No.

Ignorance is not a vice, on its own.

What bothers me is that, even after being informed that a reasonable observer 1/
could interpret the flag as a hate symbol (and that many of their HamCo neighbors took their message to be exactly that!), they have not made a single apology and have not made any attempt to reach out to the communities they alienated.

This callous insensitivity 2/
toward their neighbors is the real red flag.

Instead, they ignored their neighbors & insisted the flag was just “patriotic.”

At no point did they try to reassure anyone that they themselves aren’t bigots. Instead, they just insisted the flag wasn’t what it appeared to be. 3/

News you can use.

Try not to laugh...
The attack on "home rule" by republicans is really an attack on communities and voters across Florida by corporate interests. Everything from whore houses and casinos to fertilizer plants and private prisons want space in your community.

1/ @RoundRockISD @vessacory @tiffanie4rrisd Look at how similar Ron Watkins's (responsible for spreading the QAnon conspiracy theory) talking points are to what we've been hearing from the #momsforliberty and related elements for the last year. This could easily be inside RRHS.
2/ The ideas being parroted by the #rrisd community members he & his father have indoctrinated into their way of thinking by way of the "Q" conspiracy theory have no place in our #rrisd1family. Thank you, trustees, for passing the anti-hate & intolerance resolution.
3/ I hope that you and your colleagues will consider the context in which this resolution was passed when it comes to defending district staff & students as torrents of hate against anyone who is"different" begin to spread.

1/ What is Moms For Liberty? 🧵

This new REPUBLICAN group started in #Brevard County, FL. They spread across the country(like COVID), calling themselves "non-partisan" and "grassroots", they are neither. Last week, they formed 4 large PACs. Let's dive in!

#OperationAvalanche
2/ FACT: The Republican agenda IS to privatize public education, and put that tax money into their own private piggy banks. They have already taken several steps down that road, and that's not an exaggeration.

1/🧵 Tina Descovich is the ringleader of the "#MomsForLiberty" circus. She is a former school board member in #Brevard, and she was defeated by #JenniferJenkins for her seat in 2020. The same Jennifer Jenkins who State Rep Randy Fine is being investigated for threatening.
2/ The "small office" she claims to work out of is also home to many other interesting things, including an org she had with the other founding "mom", Bridget Ziegler, over 2 years ago.
3/ Before she was a school board member, her website says she was a marketing/PR/HR professional who has close ties to the defense industry. With Randy Fine, we can add casinos to that list.

Playing russian roulette with kids' lives during #Covid makes a little more sense now.

1/ It wasn't a conspiracy theory, it was a #CrimeAgainstHumanity...and it came from Florida. 🧵

The GOP started lying about COVID when Trump called it a "hoax". THAT lie has cost hundreds of thousands of American🇺🇲 lives. It also made them and their friends billions $$.

2/ Trump said it was a hoax on Feb 27, 2020. Community transmission was being confirmed in multiple cities in the US. Around the world, case numbers were increasing exponentially everywhere one was found, and economic disruptions began roiling global financial markets.

3/ Four Republican Senators on the U.S. Senate Intelligence Committee who knew how bad the virus was, sold their stocks ahead of a market collapse which saw equity valuations plunge up to 40% worldwide in a matter of weeks.
