Thread: With heavy heart we mourn the loss of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. As a women’s organization, #MWEG recognizes that RBG’s lifelong advocacy made our work possible; her methodical and determined fight for justice and equality expanded our opportunities.
In this moment of tension and crisis, we particularly mourn the loss of a public servant who understood democratic norms and made deep personal sacrifices to defend them, even as cancer ravaged her body.
RBG once said, “We care about this institution more than our individual egos and we are all devoted to keeping the Supreme Court in the place that it is, as a co-equal third branch of government.” MWEG believes we must all protect the SCOTUS from damage due to hyper-partisanship.

Each day this week, please do something to stand for #truth. Here are 3 to get you started:

1. Read this piece by #MWEG member Elizabeth Davis-Edwards, then get on your knees and pray for the U.S. and for truth as she so beautifully advises.

mormonwomenforethicalgovernment.org/pray-for-truth/

(1 of 3)
2. Call your senators to tell them you support a full and fair impeachment trial with pertinent witnesses and evidence.

3. Comment on our Facebook posts (facebook.com/mormonweg/), name your state, and tag someone you know asking them to read, pray, and act.

(2 of 3)
Every day, let your senators know that you are paying attention, that truth matters, and you will not be intimidated or fooled by disinformation.

Check back here daily for additional prompts!

"...I feel a deep allegiance to the principles of compassion, integrity, and “do what is right, let the consequence follow” that represent the very best of what Utah is to me."-#MWEG member Rebecca's letter to @SenatorRomney and @SenMikeLee

"Please, senators. I know it is easy for me to sit here and ask you to be brave. It must feel like I am asking you to risk a lot. But standing for the truth and standing for what is right is what Utah is—and should be—about. I am asking you to lead."
"In this time when we need leaders to protect our government from the assault of corrupt politics. Please. Stand up for a fair and impartial impeachment trial in the senate. Let the consequence follow."

As voters, we must demand the highest standards from the leaders who we ourselves helped elect. We must take back the power of our individual voices.

We are Republicans. We are Democrats. We are Independents and the unaffiliated. Our combined voices represent the majority of American voters, and we are frustrated by politicians who weaponize our two-party system as a means to consolidate and maintain political power.
Hyperpartisanship makes enemies of fellow citizens and insulates leaders from the natural and legal consequences of their actions. When this happens, we all lose. bit.ly/2s9n1Zo

The women of MWEG come from across the political spectrum and are united in their commitment to peacemaking and to boldly calling for elected leaders to govern with integrity. These are excerpts from letters written by our members before the Dec. impeachment vote in the House.
"Set aside your political biases, and live up to your oath of office. Our Constitution and country are depending on members of Congress to be principled and to be loyal to our Constitution, not a political party." — MWEG member Leslie

@MittRomney @SenMikeLee @RepChrisStewart “I know this will be a tough decision for you as the majority of your constituents are Republican. I urge you to put our nation and our beloved constitution first. We cannot have a president who feels he is above the law and acts like a king." — MWEG member Jenny

We condemn the regulation announced by the Trump administration that would abolish the 20-day limit on holding #families in jails. Families are sacred and all #children deserve to be cherished and protected. Official statement: bit.ly/2Zo2T0j #mweg

New from #MWEG
As women of faith, we take seriously the important obligation to safeguard the earth and her resources for our children and generations that follow. But individual efforts are insufficient; instead, institutional reforms are required to ensure lasting impact.
We urge governments, institutions, & businesses to mobilize strategies that will effectively curb climate change and dramatically reduce carbon emissions. We implore leaders to set aside politics to pursue policies that will aggressively and immediately address this global threat

Urgent: Trump admin is seeking to OVERTURN the #Flores settlement, which prohibits the gov’t from detaining immigrant children in detention facilities > 20 days.

This new rule they are seeking would enable the gov’t to detain immigrant children indefinitely with their parents.
We ask you to join us in opposing the detention of children and separation of families. Take 5 minutes out of your day and leave a comment on this proposed rule here: regulations.gov/document?D=ICE…
P.S. your comment will be placed on the public record, and while it doesn’t need to be long, we strongly urge you to keep in mind the principles of peacemaking.

A lot of exciting work over here at #MWEG today but first we want to speak to an urgent matter happening within the Georgia elections.

If you missed the news of the week, you need to read this story. apnews.com/fb011f39af3b40…
#MWEG leaders and members are very concerned about this news out of #Georgia, especially given the state’s history of disenfranchising African American voters.
Local, state, and federal officials should do all within their power to ensure not only that all citizens have #equal access to the #voting booth but also that #election systems, districting, and #registration are free from any hint of partisan influence.

Regarding the confirmation of Judge Kavanaugh, our Founders have written a message for broader MWEG community. Highlights in this thread or read the full remarks here: facebook.com/mormonweg/
Some have asked why #MWEG engaged so publicly in this particular battle. We did not see this as a contest between Republicans & Democrats or between conservatism or liberalism. We reject the notion that every engagement in the civic sphere be driven by partisan motives.
We engaged out of a desire to protect the legitimacy of the #SupremeCourt. And we engaged because of our conviction that sexual assault allegations should be taken very seriously and investigated thoroughly.
