1/38. Today is the eighth day of the #BonnClimateConference (#SB58) and it saw the closing plenary of the Technical Dialogue of the #GST, discussions on the #SantiagoNetwork, the continuation of the #NCQG’s 6th Technical Expert Dialogue and the first stocktaking plenary. 🧵 Image
2/38. Today also saw a focus on #HumanRights with a number of side events and an action drawing attention to the key message that “there can be no #ClimateJustice without #HumanRights”.
3/38. Joining "No #ClimateJustice without #CivicSpace and #HumanRights: zooming in on the @UNFCCC process"* with @ciel_tweets, @amnesty and @350, we heard important messages on the need for safe #CivicSpace under the @UNFCCC so that we can make our #LossAndDamage demands heard!

A recent study used "an Earth system model to examine the response of #OceanAcidification to idealized atmospheric #CarbonDioxideRemoval scenarios."

Details in a 🧵below ⬇️
1/8 Image
"In the simulations, atmospheric CO2 is assumed to increase at a rate of 1% per year to four times its pre-industrial value and then decreases to the pre-industrial level at a rate of 0.5%, 1%, 2% per year, respectively."
2/8
Results show that "the annual mean state of surface ocean #carbonate chemistry fields including [H+] conc., pH & aragonite saturation state respond quickly to removal of atmospheric CO2. Yet, the change of seasonal cycle in CaCO3 chemistry lags behind the decline in atm CO2."

Our paper documenting an extreme decline effect in #oceanacidification studies on fish behaviour is now out in @PLOSBiology!

doi.org/10.1371/journa…

The paper is much different than the original preprint, so here’s a thread: Image
Some of the most drastic & ecologically worrisome impacts of #oceanacidification are reported for fish behaviour. Initial studies from 2009-2010 documented 100% impairment of anti-predator behaviour for fish exposed to ocean acidification conditions!

onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/j.… Image
However, studies reporting no effects have seemingly increased in recent years, casting some doubt on these dire predictions

This phenomenon of decreasing effect sizes over time is not uncommon and is typically referred to as the “decline effect”

(1/n) This comment and our reply on our #Nature paper looking at fish behaviour and #oceanacidification has gotten a lot attention. Unfortunately, some of it has been very negative and unprofessional. Here’s my POV.
(2/n) First, this is a topic that folks feel passionate about. That’s great, and I’m glad the paper and both comments have sparked discussion. This is a healthy part of the scientific process and how we progress as a community.
(3/n) However, devolving into name calling and mud-slinging helps nothing, and is harmful esp to those of us without permanent positions on all sides. We don’t always have to agree scientifically, but please let’s be civil and respectful.

A recent study in @nature couldn't replicate drastic CO2 effects on coral reef #fish behaviour & empirically found no effect of #oceanacidification go.nature.com/3hK49UR

Our #metaanalysis of the past decade on this topic concurs ecoevorxiv.org/k9dby/

Breakdown thread👇
We demonstrate one of the most striking examples of the #DeclineEffect in #ecology to date, w/ reported effects of OA on fish behaviour all but disappearing over past decade

If you’ve never heard of the #DeclineEffect see: bit.ly/2EbZX2o
Qualitatively the number of studies reporting “strong” effects of #oceanacidification on fish behaviour have plummeted over time

We study #invasivespecies & the issues that spawn when a newcomer joins an already balanced ecosystem. But we know that invasions don't always happen in a perfect system.
Ocean acidification will unbalance our coastal ecosystems and open a door to more invasions. #FunFactFriday
OA, which increases as CO2 is added to the ocean, can make growing calcium-based shells very difficult for young bivalves. Oysters, mussels, and clams might grow softer or smaller shells, leaving ample opportunity for better adapted invasive species to take their place.
There are many more ways OA can hurt coastal systems. It might reduce the amount of food available from zooplankton, increase the growth of harmful algae, or even potentially dissolve carbonate structures. Any of these changes might cause unpredictable ecosystem breakdowns. Image
