You know how "#realist" is a synonym for "#asshole?" As in, "I'm not a racist, I'm just a #RaceRealist?" That same "realism" is used to discredit democracy, among self-styled "#LibertarianElitists," who claim that social science proves democracy doesn't work - and can't work.

You've likely encountered elements of this ideology in the wild. Perhaps you've heard about how our #CognitiveBiases make us incapable of deliberating, that "reasoning was not designed to pursue the truth. Reasoning was designed by evolution to help us win arguments."

Hello everyone 👋 my name is Cosima and I usually tweet at @cosima_meyer.
In my professional life, I work as a data scientist in the field of AI. I love my job because it allows me to work with fantastic teams to solve puzzles👩🏼‍💻 Image showing two people holding two puzzle pieces to the sk
@cosima_meyer Before working in the industry, I explored my passion for research in academia. I hold a PhD from the University of Mannheim in #politicalscience (my dissertation dealt with post-civil war stability 🕊).
@cosima_meyer While working at @MZESUniMannheim, I co-founded a #datascience blog “Methods Bites” (@mzes_ssdl) which provides several hands-on tutorials on #NLP, scraping #Twitter data, #dataviz, or how to publish your package on #CRAN.

1. One line that seems to divide expert advice on how the West should behave in the #RussiaUkraineWar is that most area students recommend more military support for #Ukraine while many #IR & #politicalscience professors propose accommodation of #Russia.

2. Many generalists' underlying argument, whether im- or explicitly indicated, is that #EasternEurope specialists suffer from professional distortion. An emotions overload weakens their political judgement. Thus the generalists' texts are often educational rather than analytical.
3. #Areaexperts, in contrast, suspect the #generalists of suffering from a lack of empirical and contextual information. They are afraid that the generalists neither properly know nor fully understand (or are even not interested in) key peculiarities of the #RussianUkrainianWar.

In the first world, you can do a lot with this kind of degree.
Many political science graduates can find work as a journalist/editor/ reporter with the newspapers, or work as a consultant with the electronic and social media groups,
or as a social-cultural and /or political experts with the advertising firms, or get work at some media campaign advisory and publicity firm!

⚡️ *paper out* Happy to co-author a paper reflecting past 20 years of #politicalscience in #Czechia and #CEE published in European Political Science @ECPR together w Jakub Eberle, @HubertSmekal, and Oldřich Krpec. #academia #core #periphery Access: tinyurl.com/EPSPolSci [1/16] ImageImageImageImage
We examine the developments of political science in Czechia and the post-communist CEE region in the past two decades through the lenses of two competing perspectives: *convergence* and *dependency*. [2/16]
The convergence perspective favored by liberal discourses assumes that “catching up” with excellent European political science is a question of time and effort invested since the academic market is flat and meritocratic. [3/16]

#SocialScience in general & #PoliticalScience in particular are failing SOCIETY & civilisation itself, because, in overreaction to the evils of Nazism, they lost their way, or rather, they failed to find it, & are thus now leading us towards a precipice.
It is not too late for the present generation of social science academics to correct the mistakes made by their predecessors. But first they have to recognise them.
In a misconceived, knee-jerk, #NeverAgain response to the Nazis having manipulated & abused German tribalism for their own evil purposes, human tribalism itself was demonised, which is like demonising male sexuality for its role in rape.

This was madness.

Ok, let's see you open an article and you are like:

"Wait, whaaaaaaat 43 pages???"

"And it even contains maths!???!?11!"

So you can either
- switch to panic-mode
- you can drop the course & study program (please don't!)
- or you can read quicker

But how?

In my view, it is most important to know where the most important information is. You want that information.

You want the core info. But where is?

It’s here! Happy to announce that my book Mobilizing for Development was just released by @CornellPress as a hardcover and ebook. Quick summary below 1/ Image
For decades, the story of East Asia’s economic transformation has been told from one main perspective: the developmental state framework. The book departs from that theory by shifting the focus from industrial to rural development 2/
I argue that rural modernization campaigns played a key role in the region. They occurred in Japan, Taiwan, South Korea, and China, although their outcomes varied 3/

This observation by @Yascha_Mounk really touches a nerve with me, and so I'm going to tell a story of #PoliticalScience and #academia in the early 90s as my run-in with this phenomenon. /1
@Yascha_Mounk I began my career by studying Soviet civil-military relations. It required careful textual analysis, in part because we didn't know what was going on in a closed society. We were doing research of *discovery*, not causal analysis, because we didn't have enough *facts*. /2
So I took my dissertation and wrote a research proposal for a book. I talked about it with my new department and some colleagues. They asked formalistic scientific questions like "what's your independent variable?" as if that had meaning in a deep case study. /3
