Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, and the resulting disruption of multiple global supply chains, policy think tanks have increasingly adopted the term #polycrisis to signify humanity’s destabilized status quo. 🧵
Regardless what we call it, this will be a time that calls for new attitudes and behaviors. Strategies that seemed to make sense before the #polycrisis, such as efforts to grow national economies, will need to be replaced by different ones, such as efforts to build resilience.
Fortifying resilience at the community level will be especially important, and cooperative strategies to ration scarce resources and reduce inequality will also be required so as to defuse conflict and ensure optimal outcomes for as many as possible.

Fixing the global economy is the key to fixing the world.

The best tool to fix the global economy is the blockchain.

In this thread I'm going to discuss why the blockchain age is just starting, and how AI factors into the creation of a new economy on-chain.

#Thread
Let's start with the problem statement. There is a #polycrisis which is, broadly speaking, caused by a single problem: the human race is asking more of nature than nature can sustain. Nature is dying under the load. When it breaks it will take us with it.

The secondary problem: most humans are still dirt poor, and concepts like "degrowth" threaten to trap them in poverty forever.

A billion people live in permanent want, Americans can't afford health insurance, and the richest are working on biological immortality if possible.

Today @EmmanuelMacron presented the Military Planning Law. A 🧵on what he chose to emphasize regarding the strategic context and what this means for the model of the armed forces: no longer an expeditionary force but designed for #highintensity.

twitter.com/i/broadcasts/1…
1/ First, what is the Military Planning Law? It allocates the budget for the 🇫🇷 armed forces for usually 6 years. The one @EmmanuelMacron is to submit to the French Parliament is for the period 2024-2030 (while the ongoing one was from 2019 to 2025 but will be shorten by a year).
2/ In his speech, the president considers the efforts for the armed forces must match the dangers, which are "considerable."
The 2022 National Strategic Review offered already a strategic analysis and the challenges. The MPL is about meeting them

”Monikriisin” on tehnyt viime aikoina tutuksi etenkin taloushistorioitsija Adam Tooze.

📄NEW PAPER in @Joule_CP out today: Integrated Assessment Models (IAMs) have been hugely influential in charting low-carbon pathways.

BUT we need more low-carbon pathways developed outside of IAMs.

And a thread 1/11
We’re in a global #polycrisis, and the world’s volatility, uncertainty, complexity and ambiguity (#VUCA) can’t be fully captured in IAMs. 2/11
Enormously impressive strides are being made in IAM development - and btw I’m talking about detailed process IAMs here (e.g. MESSAGE, REMIND etc), rather than benefit-cost IAMs (DICE, FUND etc). 3/11

After a year of weird weather tonight feels like an almost archetypally clear Winter's night. The heavily waxed Moon and Mars (?) is really helping with that no doubt. A visual prelude to tomorrow's cold snap and meditation on Advent themes.
Today is one of our parish's two patronal festivals. I wanted an art house shot of St Nicholas' Tower with the stunning Moon and Mars. I secretly quite like that my phone camera is useless at sky shots. The human eye isn't redundent yet.
Today's sign of the times. Wilko actually has the cost of running fairy lights ( 1p per hour ) and a reassurance therefore people can still afford them in its instore announcement. #EnergyCrisis meanwhile stock shortages the worst I've seen. #PolyCrisis

As #G20 leaders meet in #Bali they should start thinking about systemic reforms fit for the #polycrisis we are in.

Here’s a proposal I wrote for @CarnegieEndow

Here’s the #G20 communique.

Lots of warm words on climate and food insecurity but not much new.

From a quick read there’s nothing new on debt, some welcome language on @IMFNews Special Drawing Rights.

For the first time in its history, the @IEA sees #fossilfuel demand peaking across all of its projections including the “business as usual” (STEPS) scenario. What does it mean for geoeconomics & geopolitics of the global #energytransition? A🧵1/13 iea.org/reports/world-…
The dependency on #fossilfules is a risk to economic resilience & energy security inherent to the currently dominant economic models. High #coal, #oil and #gas prices have knock-on effects beyond energy systems reliability & fuel the global #polycrisis. 2/13
#EU, #UK, #Japan and others embedded a fatal vulnerability into their growth models as they bet on boosting #gas intensity of their economies post Global #Oilcrisis in the 1970s. Now they are forced to pay a high price for this oversight. 3/13

After 43 years of Tory policies (including the 12 years of Tory-lite Blairism), Margaret Thatcher has been vindicated - there truly no longer is "any such thing as a society." 1/ Image
