You can’t have a #secondchance if you never had a first. It’s a simple idea that many folks fail to consider when talking about incarcerated people.

A THREAD 👇🏾
I recently spoke at @verainstitute‘s 60th Anniversary Gala and shared some of my story of how I got my first chance to be the person I wanted to be in prison. Here’s more about my journey and what it says about “chances” for system-impacted people.
I talked about needing to prove myself right. But I didn’t care what other people thought. It was always for myself. No one should have to prove their humanity for basic needs. We all deserve a quality education, regardless of zip code, race, or incarceration status.

This research was triggered by long held assumption that terrorists are likely to reoffend upon release, which seemed confirmed by recent attacks in London by released terrorist offenders (Usman Khan and Sudesh Amman) /1
But how likely are terrorists to reoffend (in terrorism)? Answering this question is important, because policies must be based on evidence, not fears or assumptions. Fact is, there is actually little research available to guide policies... /2

Tomorrow, I'll publish a piece on terrorist #recidivism in CTC Sentinel @CTCWP. What is terrorist recidivism? How to 'measure' it? How likely are terrorists to reoffend?...
Until then, I wanted to highlight some of the work already published on this (Thread)
The first person to trigger my curiosity on this topic was the brilliant @AndrewPSilke, notably during one of his presentations. I had also read this article with Tinka Veldhuis in @Perspectives_T, a must-read terrorismanalysts.com/pt/index.php/p…
Andrew triggered my interest, which led to a workshop I organized in early 2019 with CT and CVE professionals. Like often, his remarks that the risk of terrorism recidivism is very low triggered a lot of discussions...this eventually led to my own research project
