Long, complex🧵
My very good friend @Zarelepotec retweeted this @dewszt video/photo collage & wrote "#SubT (subterranean) is an integral part of #UrbanWarfare. It is a hard & complex environment pushing soldiers to their limits...and sometimes beyond them. Are we prepared?"

Conducting operations in the urban environment is extremely challenging & the subterranean factor of it is one of the reasons why. My good friend @Digital_Sapper no doubt agrees:

In a couple of weeks I will be visiting Toronto & participating in another urban operations training exercise with the 48th Highlanders of Canada. Like last March, they have the use of an unused portion of the city’s subway system for the exercise.
I incorporated the...

Short🧵
Whenever my good friend Klem @Zarelepotec tweets an #urbanwarfare video/photo he always accompanies them with questions to drive home teaching points.
After watching this 37-minute video (at the end of this🧵) of the urban fighting in Bakhmut I pictured Klem asking:
2/9

1. Do our urban operations training areas simulate this kind of collateral damage (while maintaining safety standards) to make urban warfare training realistic?
3/9

2. Urban operations means very small unit fighting will occur: have individual soldiers been trained to use their initiative like these troops?
3. Are uniforms marked so soldiers can easily identify friend from foe? These soldiers are using green/blue tape, for example;

My thoughts on the @amnesty report on #Ukraine. These are my personal thoughts and not affiliated with any of the orgs I work for. They got the law wrong. Protocol 1 states militaries shall to the maximum extent feasible AVOID locating military objects near populated areas 1/
Ukraine can place forces in areas they are defending - especially in #urbanwarfare. There is no requirement to stand shoulder to shoulder in a field - this isn’t the 19th century. Ukraine still has an OBLIGATION to protect civilians - but they are taking steps to do so like 2/
helping civilians relocate. The info environment is complex but when I train Ukrainian #WarCrimes teams I always tell them they must investigate alleged violations of ALL parties to the conflict. 3/

"The world is changing. The battlefield is changing. It will be urban," says @SpencerGuard during the opening lesson "Why is Urban so Hard?". #miltwitter #urbanwarfare
"There was a grandma in the outskirts of Kyiv who noticed a large convoy in front of her house and picked up the phone," @SpencerGuard talking about civilians providing intelligence for drone strikes in the Battle of Kyiv. "Grandma wasn’t an obstacle. She was a force multiplier."
"Ukraine has taught Russia a master class in information warfare," said Spencer, highlighting the Ukraine Armed Forces tweets about the numbers of enemies destoryed on a daily basis.

Wątek o walce w terenie zurbanizowanym.

Krótka analiza walki w mieście przy okazji filmu z kamery 🇺🇦 żołnierza. Lokalizacja niepewna - w sumie bez wpływu na analizę.

“In the future, I can say with very high degrees of confidence, the American Army is probably going to be fighting in urban areas.”

Army Chief of Staff Gen. Mark Milley
Krótka charakterystyka walki w terenie zurbanizowanym:

1. Urbanizacja 🌎 wzrasta - wzrastać też będzie znaczenie walki w takim terenie
2. Wielopłaszczyznowość - piwnice, kanały, poziom gruntu, kolejne piętra, dachy (sektor 360)
3. Miks dystansów - od długich do bardzo krótkich

An amazing analysis of the current #Ukraine️ #war
@kamilkazani takes us back to Cold War and evolution of Russian war machine based on those weapons/tactics.
Question: Will this op prove to be as much a watershed for #Russianarmy as it was for #UkrainianArmedForces in 2014?
In addition, the entire situation raises further questions
1-As mentioned in the tweet above, would this stimulate transformation of military affairs in the #RussianArmy in particular and #RussianArmedForces forces in general?
Especially considering the points @kamilkazani made?
2-Actually, and retrospectively, this raises more questions. And these questions are based on President #Putin own past career in particular and the post #SovietUnion combat experience of the #RussianArmedForces in general

1/ As the Battle of #Kyiv approaches, it may be worth remembering seven principles of #urbanwarfare in the 21st century that we've discussed together. @SpencerGuard @shashj @Stu_Lyle @JaysonGeroux @ChasAHKnight @RitaKonaev
1. As military forces contract, they will converge on and in cities. The decisive battles are likely to take place in urban areas.
2. The urban battle will concentrate into localised inner-urban micro-sieges around fortified positions. Defensive walls will be crucial, marking out the battlelines.

1/ Ukrainian Theater of War, Day 13: Russian forces continue to concentrate around Kyiv. Substantial foreign / mercenary forces have been brought in to bolster Russian forces. Ukrainian attacks on Russian supply routes remain effective. #UkraineRussianWar #UkraineWar #Ukraine Image
2/ Humanitarian Impact. UN sources report more than 2 million refugees have fled Ukraine. Social media posting continues to confirm the increased indiscriminate attack of civilians. 60,000 civilians are trapped in Irpin. Civilians attempting to leave Sumy were blocked. #Irpin
3/ Weather assessment. In Kyiv cloudy skies and snow showers continue for the next 24 hrs. In the east snow will continue through Friday. In the south mostly sunny skies will allow for increased VKS attacks. Poor weather impedes accurate OSINT collection and aerial sorties.

Urban warfare tips from a former Marine, a Thread (In Ukranian)
Поради щодо міської війни від колишнього морського піхотинця.

Я колишній морський піхотинець США і маю українське походження.
#Ukraine #Kyiv #Kharkiv #UkraineUnderAttack #UrbanWarfare #StandWithUkraine #UkraineWar

Interesting report from @ChathamHouse about Russian MOD developments in Military Robotics. Implications for #urbanwarfare

Most notably, Russia sees urban operations as a key terrain for exploiting unmanned systems.
chathamhouse.org/2021/09/advanc…
"For urban-type warfare, Russian future plans envisage teams of light and heavy combat unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs) working with aerial drones in identifying and attacking targets, while cooperating with manned units and formations for extended periods of time." Image
They are developing UGV specifically with #urbanwarfare in mind. Platforms include:
- Shturm (Heavy Combat UGV), based on T72 chassis
- Platforma-M (infantry fire support UGV) ImageImage

#urbanwarfare 1950s style! I absolutely love these old training videos. LIVE FIRE and real buildings.
"The enemy is likely to offer their strongest resistance in built up areas...[terrain] which allows him to cause damage out of all proportions to his numbers." @SpencerGuard
These are the hard learned lessons from WWII.
- How to fight through an urban area, not just a single building (not just CQB)!
- It was routine to speculatively suppress the enemy through the ceilings/floors
- Keep it simple (limited objs) mwi.usma.edu/italian-stalin…
"Village fighting is not a specialist's task. It is every infantryman's job."
"It needs a high standard of leadership and training."
"It requires expert handling of every battalion weapon and the ability to have that weapon at the right place, at the right time."
AMEN!

A brilliant thread on an unknown battle, the battle of Seseña in the Spanish civil war. The lessons from this battle are universal for #urbanwarfare:first, coordination between forces in the same operational environment is critical because the city can consume ⬇️
Your forces. Furthermore, coordination can allow a commander a more flexible use of his forces. Second, creating a combined arm battlegroup should probably be the Modus operandi of an urban operation. Third, Reece and information gathering operations are critical. ⬇️
Or at least have a good map of the area. Fourth, working slow is the fastest method to seize the urban area. Fifth, Mission command has it's limitations and sometimes the commander should take direct control. Sixth, the enemy has advantages in so many way. ⬇️
