And now the work begins ... kicking off 4 days in Rosario, Argentina as part of the #urbanisinginplace project - learning how Rosario has supported #urban #agroecology urbanisinginplace.org - we’ll be posting to this thread over the 4 days ...
The official welcome from the city of Rosario
Finding out about the political realities of supporting #urban #agroecology in the face of economic and development pressures, and increasing industrial production of soya #urbanisinginplace
“climate change drivers are taking the lift - our responses are taking the stairs” top quote from a local authority officer from Soldini discussing potential for #urban #agroecology to mitigate against climate change
Starting the workshop sessions. First off we are hearing from Rosario about the context in which #urban #agroecology has developed here
The first agroecological vegetable garden established in 1987 at the time when industrial transgenic soya farming was also starting - others followed through the 1990s
In 2001 Argentina experienced a severe financial crisis and the municipality of Rosario developed a programme of support for #urban #agroecology as a way of providing #food and #employment for citizens in a context of widespread mobilisation for social action
The Rosario #greenbelt programme protects 800 Ha for agroecological #food production - regulations were drawn up as the result of a land use optimisation strategy to avoid competition between housing and agricultural use
The case of Riga in Latvia is very much shaped by a history of occupation and collectivisation of #land ownership followed by liberation and return to the ancestors of previous private owners. This has disrupted the development of agricultural and farming knowledge
In Latvia there is still a knowledge of #foraging and subsistence #food growing - there is also a high level of organic farming
These beautiful illustrations represent 19thC agricultural land workers in Latvia - to what extent do such representations influence our ideas about landworking now?
A communist history has led to a distrust of collective and cooperative approaches and models of #food production in Latvia
Now to London - where there is still a lot of green space compared to other cities - food growing has been pushed to the peri urban where it competes with other land uses such as horsiculture
And our final case, Brussels where the city is spread out, farming #land is fragmented and agricultural land is also being turned over to non agricultural uses
And now - just before lunch - we are having a conversation about the use and cultural acceptability of human manure #nutients #agroecology #pootalk
Some startling illustrations of the loss of #food growing land Rosario
Post lunch we are sharing the emerging hypotheses of what needs to be developed in each of the four cities (London, Riga, Rosario, Brussels) to support the development of #urban #agroecology
Contrasting models of #rural #agriculture and #urban #agroecology (note in pic 2: for “food fears” read “food fairs / markets”)
