1/ In running for office, I have tried very hard to not mention Gamergate.

But with the second mass shootings this year from someone radicalized on #8chan, I do want to share some of the things media doesn’t understand about it and what law enforcement can do to prevent more.

2/ Some history on #8chan. #Gamergate started on 4chan, a site owned and operated by current @google employee Christopher Poole.

The Gamergate threats on women were so serious, 4chan banned the topic. Posting child pornography and Gamergate are the only banned topics.

3/ Many 4chan users were so angry about the ban, they moved to mostly unknown site 8chan.

8chan mostly exists as a site for the activity too criminal for 4chan users. In fact, the legal liability was so high for 8chan that the owner left the US so servers could not be seized.

4/ We documented TONS of illegal activity on 8chan to present to the @FBI, who took over the investigation of my death threats.

It was like shooting fish in a barrel.

Stolen credit cards, malware, DDoS tools, threats on federal judges, illegal weapon sales - all on 8chan.

5/ The story of what happened next has been reported at length in WaPo and other sites.

The short version is the @FBI never looked at any of this information, and never seriously looked at my case of any of the other women targeted by Gamergate, even though congress stepped in.

6/ That lack of prosecution allowed 8chan to flourish, essentially giving it a thumbs up to continue.

I had two separate meetings with the Obama White House about Gamergate. I consider Eric Holder’s lack of action to be one of the biggest failures of that administration.

7/ If you want to stop future mass shootings planned on #8chan, the course of action is very simple.

Get a warrant, and START PROSECUTING all the blatantly illegal actions taken there. It is a crime to post stolen credit card information. It is a crime to host child pornography.

8/ Media needs to hold the justice department accountable on this. Will they continue to ignore #8chan?

This is no longer drama from the game industry. There have been TWO MAJOR MASS KILLINGS this year planned from someone radicalized on the site. We have to stop the next one.

9/ Additionally, 8chan owner Fredrick Brennan is a US citizen. Our state department needs to get him extradited back to the United States to answer for his long list of crimes.

It’s too late to save the people that have been killed because of 8chan. But we can stop the next one.
