After the heroic sacrifices of valiant & ordinary citizens, the leadership of @_AfricanUnion is about to sit in idle complicity as the soldiers in the Transitional Military Council (TMC) launch a violent & bloody #SudanCounterRevolution. #Africans everywhere shd weigh in

Here is the #SitRep: Since the end of last month, the soliders in the TMC have been launched a rolling #InternetShutdown on Khartoum with the design to facilitate a #SudanCounterRevolution by constraining & ultimately cutting off the ability of the protests to co-ordinate

At the beginning of the week, on Monday, 3 June, about 05:00hrs Khartoum time, the TMC sent 1000s of armed Rapid Support Forces (RSF) soldiers, the Janjaweed militia & men in police uniforms using RSF trucks to disperse the sit-in.

Using live rounds & under instructions from the TMC, the soldiers with their Janjaweed subalterns shot at the peaceful protesters within the sit-in site, leaving many dead, hundreds injured & many more missing & unaccounted for.

Lots of folks have issued statements of condemnation, including @antonioguterres for @UN; @MoussaFakiMht on behalf of @_AfricanUnion; @OHCHR; as well as the @EU_Commission, France, Germany & the UK, but not much else besides.

Far from sounding like firm condemnations, these statements create the impression that the ongoing #SudanCounterRevolution is just another routine #HumanRights violation to be cured by platitudes. On the contrary, these statements cld give implicit support to the TMC

Additionally, the RSF burnt down tents at the sit-in site with protesters inside. Burnt bodies have bn retrieved. Some rape cases by the RSF soldiers were
confirmed at the sit-in site & in nearby neighbourhoods, including the rape
of two female doctors

After trashing the sit-in, RSF chased protesters into away & attacked medical facilities where some of the dead bodies & injured were taken. Military officers at the Military HQ by the sit-in site were disarmed to avoid attempts to protect the protesters

The TMC is repressing dissident voices within Sudan's army & also aggressively responding to the protests in different parts of the country. It's reported that some military Generals have been placed under house arrest by the TMC.

Unified regional & international voice on this is not forthcoming. The @UN Security Council finished meeting on this today without being able to raise a statement in condemnation of the TMC. They cld not agree to condemn the #SudanCounterRevolution

It's not surprising that this #SudanCounterRevolution has bn launched after the head of the TMC, Gen Abdulfattah Burhan & his VP, Gen Mohamed Hamdan Daglo (Hemedti) returned from UAE, Egypt, Ethiopia & the OIC Conference in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

In a statement on Sudan National TV late last night, Burhan nullified the partial agreement with Opposition coalition to establish a transitional
govt & indefinitely suspended negotiations. He announced the TMC will
rule Sudan for a transitional period of 9 months.

On 30 Apr, @_AfricanUnion gave the TMC 2 months to hand over power to a civilian-led government. With yesterday’s announcement by Gen. Burhan, the AU has an obligation under the Constitutive Act to suspend Burhan's #SudanCounterRevolution from AU membership & impose sanctions

In addition, @UN & @_AfricanUnion shd collaborate to establish a Commission of Inquiry (CoI) into the massacres & associated atrocities by the TMC & the agents of the #SudanCounterRevolution urgently accompanied by an offer of an internationally-facilitated mediation.

A safe landing for the #SudanUprising is important for #Africa's stability. If #TheSudanCounterRevolution succeeds, we cld end up with a contagion of #StateFragmentation & instability afflicting much of the Sahel as well as countries of the #NileBasin & the #GreatLakes of #Africa

2mrw, 6 June, @_AfricanUnion Peace & Security Council, PSC, will hold an emergency session on the situation in Sudan. The session was agreed following an informal consultation among the PSC, following the massacres in Khartoum on Monday, 3 June 2019.
