#FreeExpression is a foundational value in a democratic society because it makes choice possible between competing visions of how to organize society. It also makes it possible for citizens to convey their views to leaders, hold inform one another & hold govt to account
So, #FreeExpression is worth standing up for & defending. It also means those charged with regulating it have a high duty to do their job with a high sense of responsibility & due regard to the underlying constitutional & civic value in free expression

For a long time, the way in which #Nigeria's broadcasting regulator, the NBC, undertakes its work has been open to question. Some of the queries it issues to broadcasters leave it open to charges of partisanship & clearly show no regard for constitutional values

After the heroic sacrifices of valiant & ordinary citizens, the leadership of @_AfricanUnion is about to sit in idle complicity as the soldiers in the Transitional Military Council (TMC) launch a violent & bloody #SudanCounterRevolution. #Africans everywhere shd weigh in
Here is the #SitRep: Since the end of last month, the soliders in the TMC have been launched a rolling #InternetShutdown on Khartoum with the design to facilitate a #SudanCounterRevolution by constraining & ultimately cutting off the ability of the protests to co-ordinate
At the beginning of the week, on Monday, 3 June, about 05:00hrs Khartoum time, the TMC sent 1000s of armed Rapid Support Forces (RSF) soldiers, the Janjaweed militia & men in police uniforms using RSF trucks to disperse the sit-in.

#Nigeria's #GDP growth remains just above 2% YoY in Q1 2019, albiet lower than in Q4 2018.
#Nigeria: Real #GDP continues to grow at slightly more than 2% YoY in Q1 2019 (+2.01%). However, this represents a slowdown from 2.38% growth in Q4 2019, and is still well below growth levels before the 2014 oil price crash.

The slowdown came from both lower non-oil growth (+2.47% vs +2.70% in Q4) and a deeper contraction of oil #GDP (-2.40% vs -1.62% in Q4). It was the 4th consecutive quarter of decline in the #oil sector.

The World’s population is divided into 4. 25% of us are on close to half the land mass - all of USA, Canada, South America and most of Africa. Another 25% is spread across all of Europe, Russia and East Africa.

1/ The country’s profile got bleaker this week for a host of reasons - impetuous regulatory behaviour, refugees left out in the cold, a needless rise in public recurrent spending and an unshackled rogue police squad.
2/ Nothing illustrates #Nigeria’s dysfunction as much as the minimum wage palaver. The ₦27,000 ($75) or even ₦30,000 ($83) is not much – those that earn it will hover around the poverty line.
3/ The issue is that even such a wage is beyond the capacity of @AsoRock to pay, and for many small businesses as well, this will represent a massive upswing in cost. There is a disconnect between value creation by the workforce, and how much they earn.

Who own the crude oil in Nigeria?

Rather simple question won’t you say

to own a thing, implies you derive utility from it, so let’s answer by examining who derives utility from crude oil in Nigeria. Utility of course means taxes, who derives taxes from crude oil?
As at 1958 this was how crude oil taxes were shared

1. Oil Producing States retained 67.4% of Mining Rents & Royalties

2. Federal Government got 20% of Mining Rents & Royalties

3. Non-oil states got 12.6%

So the crude oil was owned by the States.
In 1970, General Yakubu Gowan passed decree No 13, this was how crude oil taxes were now to be shared.

1970
1. Oil Producing States retained 45% of Mining Rents and Royalties

2. Federal Government got 55% of Mining Rents and Royalties

3. Non-oil states got 0%
