The business of the state is not done until significant #climateaction is in place. Cap-and-invest is not dead for 2019. It’s what we voted for. Thousands of Oregonians, from every corner of our state, call on our elected leaders for a special session to pass this bill. #ORleg
Bold action is necessary for our state to combat and prepare for the #climatecrisis. Make no mistake, Senate Republicans are coming back under their terms after walking out on Oregon’s children twice this year. This is not how our democracy is supposed to work. #ORpol
Continuing to capitulate to demands of a small minority, which has taken our legislature hostage, will only lead to more of the same because there are no consequences. It was never just about a climate protection bill, but a long list of Senate GOP demands and grievances.
It’s clear the Senate Republican walkout was a breach of their signed agreement not to employ this tactic again. They broke their word. They made their pitch to Oregon voters in November and it was rejected by an overwhelming majority. #ElectionsMatter
This behavior is usurping power from voters and violating our right to a functioning democracy. Senate Republicans and some Democrats turned their backs on voters when they put industry profits before the health of our people.
The heated doomsday rhetoric over reducing pollution should not be continually unchallenged when there is no basis in fact or history -- because cap-and-invest is working in other places with growing economies and falling pollution.
There is no safe status quo. We either undertake a dramatic transition to clean energy or we suffer the almost unimaginable consequences of the climate crisis to our health, economy, and natural resources in Oregon. This crisis knows no boundaries, no senate districts.
The world’s scientists have given us 11 years to take significant action to combat #climatechange and #Oregon is not yet doing its part. Rural, low-income, Tribes and communities of color in Oregon will suffer most.
