Big Tech steals from news, but it doesn't steal *content* - it steals *money*. In my @EFF series "Saving News From Big Tech," I show how #AdTech and #AppStore monopolies yield vast transfers from news to tech, starving newsrooms and gutting reporting:

Big Tech steals from the news, but what it steals is *money*, not *content*. Talking about the news, excerpting it, linking to it, quoting it - these are all beneficial, normal news activities. If you can't talk about the news, it's not news - it's a *secret*.

But tech *does* steal from news. A variety of monopolistic tricks allows tech to interpose itself between reporters, publishers and outlets, and the audiences they serve. By creating chokepoints between the news and its audience, tech can extract gigantic sums from the news.

Big Tech steals from the news, but it doesn't steal *content* - it steals *money*. That matters, because creating copyrights over the news facts, headlines, or snippets to help news companies bargain with tech makes the news *partners* with tech, rather than watchdogs.

How does tech steal money from the news? Lots of ways! One important one: tech steals ad revenue. 51% of every ad dollar gets gobbled up by tech companies - primarily the cozy, collusive #AdTech duopoly of #Google/#Facebook (AKA #Googbook).

To believe in the $PERI story you have to believe that its $MSFT partnership (35% of sales) is sustainable. We don't. We found that it recently lost its top supply award. Not even a regional nominee this year. Image
There is clear evidence the $PERI and $MSFT partnership is falling behind plan. Serious contract renewal risk coming up in 2024. They should have booked $450m of revenue by now, but only at $401m #risk #contract #adtech #promotion Image
$PERI needs to explain its tie in with Yandex and $MSFT. It heavily promoted this growth avenue. We found that Perion just lost Yandex. How will it replace this? There aren't enough search partners to fill the gap Image

Well, yes...and no. Despite flaws (#RightToBeForgotten), the GDPR has strong, well-crafted, badly needed privacy protections. But to get those protections, Europeans need their privacy regulators to enforce the rules.

Amazon is *very* proud of its #flywheel: first, they subsidized customers, luriing in sellers. Then they demanded lower prices, luring more buyers. With more customers, more sellers piled in. Faster the flywheel spins, creating the #EverythingStore:

Problem: Centralized ad exchanges cause inefficiencies, "ad tech tax," & slow pages. Solution: @AlkimiExchange tackles these issues, aiming to enhance publisher revenue & user experience.

Enshittification, you'll recall, is the lifecycle of the online platform: first, the platform allocates #surpluses to end-users; then, once users are locked in, those surpluses are taken away and given to business-customers. 3/

Microsoft has nothing to lose. It's spent billions on #Bing, a search-engine no one voluntarily uses. Might as well try something so stupid it might just work. But why is Google, a monopolist who has a 90+% share of search worldwide, jumping off the same bridge as Microsoft? 3/

My observations on @AGRobBonta's first major #CCPA enforcement action, announced today against @Sephora - big news for U.S. privacy. 1/16

✨Settlement: oag.ca.gov/system/files/a…
First, @Sephora is a strategic choice. The most significant outcome is their 2-yr agreement to honor Global Privacy Control (GPC) signals. It's very important for the AG to get this on the books, because it bolsters CCPA's key (only) redeeming feature: the universal opt-out. 2/
Despite CCPA's underlying weaknesses (advocates have rightly criticized it as an ineffectual notice & choice law), the concept of a decentralized "universal opt-out" browser mechanism has taken hold in the US and been adopted in CO, CT - with great promise. 3/

(1/5) I moved into the #Web3 #advertising industry a few months ago when I joined @PermissionIO 🚀

Coming from a #Facebook Ads background, I thought I'd share a few trends I'm observing that will change the #AdTech industry as a whole.

A thread 👇
(2/5) #DataOwnership. Users know their data is VALUABLE. With decentralized tech like #blockchain that support data autonomy, they will share in its value. This transfer of power's already happening, with progressive brands seeking ways to reward consumers for their data 🔥
(3/5) Consumer Data Platforms (#CDPs) We're moving away from 3rd-party data. With CDPs, marketers & advertisers can micro-focus on user experiences across the customer engagement cycle, utilizing 1st-party data, lowering reliance on #3rdparty brokers who've dominated the market.
