We talk a lot about paper mirrors in fiction, but there's also a very specific and reflexive joy that comes with finding them in autistic academia.
(I'm working on a thesis section about the impact of the Internet on Autistic organizing and currently citing an article on #ActuallyAutistic Twitter that's just spot fucking on in every way that matters.)
(This project switched from primarily oral history to primarily research pretty late in the game, and it's been nice to have a frantic scramble punctuated by a lot of moments of #AutisticJoy)

Here are my takes on Netflix's new show, #LoveOnTheSpectrum, as an #ActuallyAutistic viewer.

A thread... 1/?

1st episode: I really like how they talk about how the ratio of boys to girls with autism is shrinking down from that often cited ratio of 4:1. They mention how this is due to our increased understanding of different presentations of autism, so A++ there!

2/?
I also love that they touch on how empathetic autistic people can be! It is often our superpower, & we can become amazing at things like reading facial expressions & body language, even better than a typical person in some cases, due to our ability to observe/study behavior.

If I have one measure of my autistic advocacy, it’s Knox. He’s seven. Every time I see him I think “I’ve got 11 years.”

Eleven years until he turns 18. What world will he enter then? That’s my focus. It keeps me motivated; pushes me to hustle hard everyday.

Also, this video!
❤️
Video Description: A video showing a young black boy coloring a fist with a brown crayon. Subsequent images show him smiling and holding up his coloring. An additional photo shows three young white children coloring similar drawings.
I’ve been fortunate to have been able to spend time with lots of autistic kids and their parents. I see myself reflected in each and I work for all of them.

It’s just that something clicked when I hung out with Knox and his parents. I can’t explain it, but it said “hurry up”.

The #Neurodiversity Community at @Square is made up of employees who are #autistic, otherwise #neurodiverse, parents of neurodiverse children, and allies.

I’ve volunteered my time assisting this employee resource group. It’s allowed me to work with them to test concepts which can work for #neurodivergent employees everywhere. It’s an amazing group!

I’m still processing yesterday afternoon with @jtknoxroxs and her amazing son Knox. I don’t even know where to start. So much goodness. So, I’ll start a thread...
First, it was just great to sit next to a seven year old autistic boy and just talk and play. I instantly recognized myself in Knox. I was a quiet and recluse kid. Knox is joyous and bubbly and very engaging. Yet, I saw the shared underpinnings in his and my childhoods.
I’m still dwelling on the little things - like how he approached toys, how he moved his hands, how he communicated and received information. I just felt this wave of happiness overcome me as I thought “Oh, wow. I so get you, kid.”

Why just meet for coffee when you can stim and watch elevators? I credit @autsomesmiles as the person who helped me come out as autistic. She credits me as the person who helped her come out as a lesbian. #GoTeam!

We met as adults, but soon discovered that we had a lifelong special interest elevators at hotels designed by the late Atlanta architect #JohnPortman (@portman_arch). As autistic kids, we’d make our parents take us to watch the mesmerizing glass elevators he put in his hotels.
It was #JohnPortman who invented the atrium hotel. As an autistic kid, whenever I’d visit family in Atlanta, the first thing I’d make them do is take me to watch elevators in the cavernous 53-story high @AtlMarriottMarq. It was heaven for an autistic child. I’d watch for hours.

Wow. Just wow!

I always say that if you want to help autistic people, empower autistic people. Today, neurodiverse employees at @Square celebrated #Neurodiversity by highlighting voices like @fodderfigure, @aneeman, @singer_judy,
@autselfadvocacy, & @jtknoxroxs.
Seen at @Square HQ:

“The existence of autistic people like me is not a tragedy. If you spend time following hashtags like #ActuallyAutistic and the work of organizations like @autselfadvocacy and @awnnetwork_, a cure is the last thing on any of our minds.”

Today in “Amazing Parents”: You May remember @jtknoxroxs getting flack for showing how stimming brings joy to her son. It led to a great discussion about #AutisticJoy led by autistic people. It turns out Jen is a graphic designer. She’s now made Autistic Joy stickers! See below. She’s also made a series of Black Autistic Voices sticker inspired by her son.

Jen says she wants to be a “graphic ally” of the autistic community (I really love that). Stickers are available on her website:

She just made a run of 50 stickers, so grab one (they come in a pack of two) while you can. However, I feel that folks with having making even more.

I personally want that #AutisticJoy design on a tank top, a coffee mug, and wherever.

Yay for amazing parents of autistic kids!

Yesterday, an older kid was chasing my child around and yelling. When the sitter asked him to stop because it was terrifying my child, the boy says,"That's weird," and runs off. After some time to calm down, my child is back to playing.
The boy immediately starts chasing her and yelling-- again. This terrified my child to meltdown. The sitter sees the older boy's mother and asks, "Your son is just playing, and everyone else is fine with it, but it's really scaring her. Would you mind to ask him to stop?"
The mother says, "He's not doing anything wrong. Boys will be boys." The sitter confirms that he's not doing anything wrong, but that my child is autistic and plays differently. She's younger, and she doesn't understand why he's chasing her and yelling.
