Common Symptoms of Bipolar disorder
Bipolar disorder is a mental health condition that can cause extreme mood swings, energy, and activity levels. ⚡⚡⚡
🔮 Mania or Hypomania: People with bipolar disorder may experience periods of elevated or irritable mood, increased energy and activity levels, and reduced need for sleep. This is known as a manic episode (if severe) or hypomanic episode (if less severe).

In my clinical experience as a mental health counselor working with clients with bipolar disorder, I have seen a reduction in ##medication usage and stability in #mood 1/8
One of the most exciting parts of this work is seeing my clients imagine themselves as someone who is well. #Bipolar disorder can supersede someone's sense of self, making them believe their symptoms are their personality. 2/8
However, I see the opening of possibilities and improvement in function as they start to dream about doing other things. Some of my clients choose to stay on some medications, but usually, there is a lowering of the dosages and discontinuation of many. 3/8

I had the wildest night today.
It started with a really bad dream - an absolutely miserable experience. It was a wild mix between reality, warped cotton-like air and an extremely vivid feeling of being a complete failure as a professional and just as a decent human being.
All the wrong things I did were causing overwhelming pain. Sometimes I almost woke up and saw my real room through my closed eyelids.

I've been thinking about this a lot tonight. So, as someone who is autistic, ADHD, & generally neurodivergent/neurodiverse, I heavily struggle with executive functioning. Executive dysfunctioning might be my biggest barrier in life 🧵#DEHEM21 #DisInHigherEd
In college, I noticed that I really struggled in my classes when I was taking classes that had no relation to one another. For instance, if I took biology & English together, it was a nightmare. I had trouble switching topics & even thinking styles. (2/) #DEHEM21
After a few semesters, I started trying to plan my semesters so that I took similar courses & courses with similar cognitive styles together because task-switching became a nightmare for me. I got an accommodation to register early for classes (3/) #DEHEM21 #DisInHigherEd

My 1906 Steinway Model O - this was my Great Aunts/ (fairy) God Mothers - somehow gratefully came into my world circa 2015 - its arrival actually contributed to the major BP1 High I had that year (pictured) which got me diagnosed -3 decades of intense suffering too late but hey🥰 Image
Attempting to arrange its arrival single handedly was an unmitigated tragi/comedy disaster, which is kind of the norm I've come to expect as someone with brain damage to the frontal cortex executive organising part of the brain.
You don't want the gory details of the wake of destruction & demolition that resulted in this 6'6 grand piano entering my living roof. Suffice to say I needed a jobbing builder, in all 3 times.......

The following respected scientific & public health organizations, with no industry ties, have reviewed the evidence and made public statements on the relative risk of #SaferNicotine vapes vs. toxic tobacco. There's rather a lot of them.

On 2/19/13, I drove my husband to a hospital because I was extremely concerned about his mental health. After 5 days in the hospital, he was released with an incorrect diagnosis and prescriptions for medications that ultimately would not end what he was struggling with. 1/5
We pursued a new doctor & got an accurate diagnosis. My husband lives every day with #BipolarDisorder. In the beginning, this was a scary diagnosis, but over time and through therapy, we've both learned strategies for living with the ebbs & flows of this specific illness. 2/5
My husband is the face of #BipolarDisorder but his experience is not unique. According to @NAMICommunicate, in America, 1 in 5 adults & 1 in 6 youths will experience a mental illness each year. How many people in your world struggle with an illness you can’t see? 3/5

Elements of my management of #bipolardisorder: a thread

1.) Medication. I couldn't work on many of these things until this laid down a foundation.

2.) Sleep. If I don't get enough of this, I will invite mania. But I've noticed something unusual lately...
...I am becoming manic even with enough sleep. I'm not sure of what is happening but it may be resolved with

3.) Stress control. Like everyone else, #QuarantineLife is taking its toll on me. I hardly see my friends except on Zoom. Socializing helps dispel the little blue devils.
4.) Exercise. I could do more of this but the heat wave has limited the hours I can get out.

5.) Diet. High blood sugar can lead me to depression, so watching what I eat is critical.

The next items pertain to habits of mind.

I worked hard to come back from the brink. I fight my illness nearly every day of my life. But I am not a hero for the abled to applaud. My life is my own to live, not as an example for those who have no clue of what I have experienced. #bipolardisorder
It is dangerous for us to seek the fawning attention of the abled. It does not raise us in their eyes but lowers the body of all of us as human beings. While I will accept help from the abled if I need it, I am wary of it because of what may come attached.
And I must ask: is my life story that much more helpful to others with my condition than taking the time to listen to people in need? My experience is special to me. I have not written a book because I do not want...

I'm about to put the pictures of the fire in the wetlands to bed (they were beginning to look alike). Starting tomorrow I am going to inflict cat photos on you. And some selfies.

But these are not what is making me unpopular tonight...
...I spoke up about people making an addict a hero. Look, I said, I resisted the peer pressure, the desire to alleviate boredom, self medication, etc. and I did not become an addict. Well they said "your high self confidence..."
-- my self confidence was never high and it is not high now. Every week my therapist and my wife tell me that I am not as bad as I think I am. People who know me well know that belief in myself is not my trademark. I have never...

I slept for fourteen or fifteen hours today after sleeping six the night before. Sleep is one of the most important things when you live with #bipolardisorder -- too much and you sink into a depression. Too little and...
...you are the obnoxious life of the party. So my body fought off the mania by blasting me with an excessive night stupor. It made it hard to engage for very long with people on my online bipolar support group. Perhaps it was for the best given that I was such dismal company.

I had long suspected that there were ways to game the system at #Flickr. In the back of my head, I questioned the huge number of likes some photographers got. Today I ran into a guy with an account whose photos were so bad...

1/
...it would have been surprising if he had one or two faves. Think washed out, bad composition, etc. He averaged more than a hundred likes per photo. This threw me for a loop and for awhile I felt like Job with all the people giving me advice...
...about how I should learn from this sociopath. One friend did some research for me and discovered that there are ways to buy faves, bots that will like your stuff. I will study it more so I can tell you how it works, but for now I shall be stupid...

Late every night -- as I finish sorting my photos at #Flickr -- a darkness comes over me. Often it comes without subject. This mood is impossible to visualize in a photograph because outsiders expect a cause for every #depression. There is none.
"Cautious" is the title I gave to the last photo. It's the proper state of mind for the times. We need to be cautious. I have been inside since the 7th of July due to #COVID19, avoiding my fellow human beings who walk around without masks, merrily spreading infection.

Yes, I am a wreck sometimes. I don't believe in taking the pains to look like a person who I am not. If my hair is a mess, then it is a mess. That is how I am. Many people cannot afford to be like I am. They cannot afford to let their #depression show.

#SushantSinghRajput's death is being hijacked by toxic elements with personal political agendas unrelated to him. Don't let them rob us of this chance to spotlight #mentalhealth. I am re-sharing here my recent interview with #Parvathy @parvatweets. #LetsTalkAboutDepression
It's sickening to see a tragedy being exploited by I-me-myself individuals, a political party & fakes who have grabbed the moment to target social groups they always target anyway, thus drowning out the cause they claim to espouse i.e. nepotism. #LetsTalkAboutDepression (Contd)
So I have decided to spend the next few days sharing articles & SM posts on #mentalhealth here & recommending works of art on the subject that have been a part of my learning process. Please return the favour and recommend shows etc to me 😊 #LetsTalkAboutDepression

1/ I would like to share my story of my #mentalillness (Bipolar Disorder II) and how I deal with it, to show that mental illness is everywhere, and that someone can have a mental illness and be successful. I hope this story can empower someone and help reduce the stigma.
2/ I am a successful PhD student in Chemistry. I am happy, I have travelled the world, I have lived abroad for a year, I am a varsity Squash athlete, I have a BSc in Biochemistry and a MSc in Chemistry. But my biggest success: doing all this while managing a mental illness.
3/ A few weeks ago, I woke up and it took me over an hour to get out of bed. After a day of achieving little at work, I went straight home. I did not feel like my usual after-work walk, I did not want to play squash, I did not want to read a book. I had no energy.

As politicians are jockeying to save face with both their constituents and lobbyists, trading in the universally desired #MedicareForAll, for the #MedicareForMore slogan pushed by #neoliberals, I echo the words of my sister-in-arms @MuyMexi when I say the following; (1/X)
This should not be happening in the “greatest country in the world”. People should not be forced to choose between food and the table and insulin to treat their bodies for the food they are going to eat. #MedicareForAll removes that barrier for all people.

I used to work for @Medtronic Diabetes Helpline, helping insulin patients troubleshoot their devices. One of the things I learned while working there is the extreme pain that #Diabetes patients have to subject themselves to, just to live a “Normal” life.
