Image

#Stellar is made for interoperable payments and has an on-chain #DEX. Its consensus mechanism is similar to the Internet, making it:

✅Fast
✅Cheap
✅Scalable
✅Regulatory friendly

In #WWII, #coal was central to the war effort. It not only kept people warm but powered industry, railways and shipping. The war couldn’t be fought with it and it was essential to the #Canadian economy.

Yet Nova Scotia #coal production declined from a wartime high of nearly 7.4 million tons in 1941 to 5.1 million tons in 1945.

In the Dominion Coal Company mines, which accounted for close to 60% of the province’s coal production, output fell from 4.3 million tons in 1941 to less than 3 million tons in 1945.

The old #Bridgewater post office was designed by David Ewart and built in 1909 by builders Faulkner and MacDonald. It was built in the federal style, with the ground level windows featuring rounded tops and stone arches.

Some legislature trivia on provincial government budget day! Why does the legislature have a mace and where did it come from?
Read this thread to find out!

#nspoli #cbpoli #NovaScotia #capebreton #CB #NS @NSLeg @nsgov #gold #nsbudget ImageImage
The @NSLeg mace was donated anonymously to the House on March 5, 1930 but the donor's name - Chief Justice Robert Edward Harris - was released after his death in 1931.
It is gilded sterling silver - #silver with a thin layer of #gold - four feet tall and weighs 18 pounds.
#nspoli Image
The mace was made in England by Elkington and Co. which pioneered electroplating in the 1830s, a process that bonds thin layers of a metal to the surface of another metal at the molecular level. Plating is often done to dress up a cheaper metal or to make it more durable.

Loonies weren't going to be loonies?!
The #loonie was introduced in 1987 but #Canada has had $1 coins since 1935. They were usually minted in small numbers and were mostly collector's items, not in wide circulation.

#nspoli #cbpoli #novascotia #capebreton #CB #NS @CanadianMint Image
The loonie was going to show a Voyager and indigenous person in a canoe as most $1 coins had since 1935 but the engraving device was lost on its way from Manitoba to Ottawa in 1986. The loonie image was designed to prevent anyone making fake coins with the missing device.
#nspoli Image
$1 coins were 80% silver in 1935 and were often called silver dollars. In 1987 the loonie was 91.5% nickel but today it's multi-ply brass plated steel. No more silver dollars!

It's chilly today but nothing like during #SnowballEarth – a deep freeze that took place about 720-640 million years ago. Carbon dioxide levels plummeted, #Earth cooled and was mostly covered in ice.
#nspoli #cbpoli #Novascotia #capebreton #NS #CB Image
We know about #SnowballEarth thanks to #geology. Glacial deposits - rocks that were left by glaciers - indicate there were glaciers at the equator at that time. If there were glaciers in #Earth's warmest areas, there were probably glaciers everywhere.
#nspoli #cbpoli #Novascotia Image
#SnowballEarth likely ended because volcanic eruptions under the ice put CO2 back into the atmosphere and warmed earth again. This facilitated the #CambrianExplosion ~541 million years ago, in which complex animal life forms appeared on Earth for the 1st time.

We love getting questions about #mining, #minerals and #geology! We were recently asked about #MicaHill in Cape Breton. Here’s our answer:

#nspoli #cbpoli #novascotia #capebreton #NS #CB #victoriacounty ImageImage
#MicaHill is likely #NovaScotia’s best deposit of mica. Test pits were sunk there in summer 1882 by the Scotian Mining Company which confirmed the presence of a large supply of good quality #mica.
#nspoli #cbpoli #novascotia #capebreton #NS #CB ImageImage
There are few records about the extraction took place on #MicaHill. This is not unusual. Many historical #NovaScotia mines/quarries have extensive documentation – and @NS_Energy_Mines plays an important role preserving them.

#NovaScotia has 64 historical #gold districts – areas in which gold exploration and/or #mining took place in the 1800s and 1900s.
Check out this threat to learn more!
#nspoli #cbpoli #capebreton #ns #cb @LarryHarrisonPC @SteveStreatch @David_Hendsbee @lloydphines ImageImage
Establishing #gold districts allowed @nsgov to administer NS mineral rights. It also helped avoid the crime, violence and disease that accompanied gold rushes in California (1848) and Australia (1851) by establishing a legal process for staking claims and managing areas.
#nspoli Image
Some #NovaScotia #gold districts saw a lot of #mining but many saw very little.
The #Tangier gold district was one of the first established. Gold was discovered there in 1860 and over 600 miners and prospectors arrived in the Tangier area within a year.

We love getting questions about #mining, #minerals and #geology! We were recently asked about historical mining in #PortHood, #Inverness County. Here’s our answer:

#nspoli #cbpoli #NovaScotia #CapeBreton #NS #CB ImageImage
In the 1740s-1750s, a quarry on #PortHood Island was the main supply of finished/dressed sandstone for #FortressLouisbourg’s window and door casements. About 60 men worked there in summer and the stone was sent by barge through the #StraitofCanso to #Louisbourg.
#nspoli #cbpoli Image
Many historical #NovaScotia buildings, including the more important buildings at #Louisbourg, were made of stone that was considered somewhat unattractive (i.e. fieldstone or ironstone), so it was often fancied up with granite or sandstone trim.

We love getting questions about #mining, #minerals and #geology! We were asked about the red soil and sand at #CabotsLanding Provincial Park in #CapeBreton. Here’s our answer:

#nspoli #cbpoli #NovaScotia #CapeBretonHighlands #CB #NS ImageImage
Sand and soil are eroded rock. Red sand and soil, like at #CabotsLanding, eroded from rock with significant iron content. Iron oxidizes/rusts when exposed to air, so the red is rusted iron.

#nspoli #cbpoli #NovaScotia #Capebreton #CB #NS ImageImage
The sand, soil and clay at #CabotsLanding are glacial outwash - sediments deposited by glaciers as they melted at the end of the last ice age 10,000 years ago. Much of the sediment is eroded from the #CapeBreton Highlands, which used to be much bigger.

Check out this thread for the history of the General Mining Association and how it built #NS' coal industry!

In 1826, King George IV granted his brother, Prince Frederick, the Duke of York, all mineral rights in Nova Scotia that had not previously been granted.
#nspoli #cbpoli ImageImage
These rights were, in turn, given to the General Mining Association, a company formed by Rundell, Bridge and Rundell, the Royal Goldsmiths from 1797-1843.

#nspoli #cbpoli #NovaScotia #capebreton #NS #CB ImageImage
The Duke of York, who was known for his free-spending ways, was heavily indebted to RBR. He gave them the mineral rights in exchange for clearing his debts and 25% of the GMA's profits.

#nspoli #NovaScotia #cbpoli #capebreton #NS #CB Image
Contrary to popular belief, #coal has rarely, if ever, played a role in the formation of #diamonds. Most diamonds that have been dated are much older than Earth's first land plants - the source material of coal.
geology.com/articles/diamo…

#nspoli #cbpoli #NovaScotia #NS #CB Image
Most diamonds formed when immense heat and pressure in earth's mantle turned pure carbon into colorless crystals. Volcanic activity carried them to the earth's surface where we mine them.

#NovaScotia has historically been one of the world’s largest suppliers of #gypsum. The mine in #Milford is the world's largest surface gypsum mine. Gypsum’s main use is as an ingredient in wallboard.

When #gypsum mining started in #NovaScotia in the late 1700s, it was done by farmers who extracted blocks from their farms, hauled it by horse and cart to #Windsor and sold it to local traders. It was then exported to the US east coast for use as fertilizer.

#Gypsum fixes alkaline (high pH) soil. US inventor #BenFranklin learned this from the French and brought the idea to the US in 1785.

We love getting questions about #mining, #minerals and #geology! In response to our post yesterday about how #NovaScotia’s #gold deposits formed, we were asked about “barrel quartz.” Here’s our answer:

#nspoli #NS #CB #capebreton #Waverley @waverleyns @SteveStreatch @Bill_Horne ImageImage
Barrel quartz is a term used to describe the #gold deposit on #LaidlawHill in #Waverley in the 1800s. It isn’t a technical/geological term. The miners used it to describe what they saw: folded, gold-bearing quartz veins whose outcrops are corrugated and resemble barrels.
#nspoli Image
The quartz veins that host the #gold are hard and surrounded by soft shale. When the rocks were compressed by forces resulting from tectonic plate collision, the quartz vein buckled to form barrel shapes but the surrounding shale reacted like toothpaste and absorbed the pressure. Image

All gold on Earth formed billions of years ago in stars that over-heated and blew up. Gold formed in the heat of the explosions and then floated around space. As rock, dust and other materials came together to form #Earth, #gold was distributed around the planet.
#nspoli #cbpoli Image
400 million years ago #NorthAfrica and #NorthAmerica started colliding. Sub-sea sediments were squished between the tectonic plates, upthrusted and folded as they turned into rock.
#nspoli #cbpoli #NovaScotia #NS #cb #capebreton Image
This allowed fluid to leach #gold from rock deep underground and flow into cracks in rock closer to surface, forming veins of #quartz and gold as the fluid eventually cooled and hardened.
This is how most #NovaScotia gold deposits formed.
