The #BonnClimateConference failed once again to address the key drivers of the #ClimateCrisis [= #FossilFuels]. Delay is the new Denialism.

Science is crystal clear, the only way to meaningfully reduce emissions is a rapid, equitable, full & funded phase-out of ALL fossil fuels. In this essential #JustTransition, there's is NO space for dangerous distractions such as #CCS or #CarbonRemoval.

🚨📝NEW PAPER 📝🚨

Recent study present an analysis of “the gap between the CO2 storage required to meet net zero targets and the slow maturation of regional storage resources.”

#NetZero
#EuropeanGreenDeal
#CarbonDioxideStorage
#EnergyTransition

🧵 1/12 ImageImage
Researchers estimate that “European storage rates need to boost 30-100x by 2030 to meet #NetZero by 2050. 🇨🇳 & North America face a similar challenge. The slow global progress of #CarbonStorage undermines the latest IPCC, IEA & EU transition pathways to net zero by 2050.”
2/12 Image
“These pathways imply a radically in teased demand for carbon capture and storage & #NegativeEmissionTechnologies (#NETs), contributing 500 of 700 megatonnes of #CarbonDioxideRemoval annually by 2050.”

Today and tomorrow, @G7 #Energy ministers meet in #Japan – a country, often considered a “laggard” on #energytransition. What is 🇯🇵’s energy system like and why is it so reluctant to step up #decarbonisation of its economy? A 🧵 1/19

env.go.jp/en/earth/g7/20…
The “usual” arguments by the 🇯🇵 government when confronted with lack of both action and ambition on #energytransition:
1. #Japan is resource-poor
2. Japan’s geography limits #renewables build-out
3. Technologies & Innovation will solve the transition

How true are they? 2/19
Japan is indeed poor in some resources, most notably #fossilfuels. Fossil fuel based, its energy system is 88% dependent on #oil, #LNG and #coal imports. It has one of the least self-sufficient energy systems, dependent on #oil & gas from #MiddleEast & #coal from #Australia. 3/19 ImageImage

The Pathways to Commercial Liftoff: Advanced Nuclear report found that the U.S. will need between 550-770 GW of additional clean, firm power to complement the deployment of variable renewables in order reach net-zero by 2050.
All #CleanFirm resources come with Pluses and minuses that we try to define for the first time. Please give us feedback!

Ein kurzer 🧵zu CCS... ->
#CCS wird oft als unabdingbar dargestellt, um die #Klimaziele zu erreichen. Allerdings verwenden die allermeisten derzeitigen CCS-Projekte das CO₂ dafür, um bestehende Öl- und Gasfelder besser ausnutzen zu können. Das nennt sich "Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR)" -->

(weil Twitter Tweets verschluckt, nochmal)

Wichtiger Unterschied:
#CCS greift CO₂ and Punktquellen ab
#CDR das CO₂ direkt aus der Luft
@sciforfuture @DerGraslutscher @TerliWetter @sci_ffert @ReiSteurer @NurderK @AkkuDoktor @HolzheuStefan @M_Hundhausen @FridayForFuture 2/4
#CCS Carbon Caputure & Storage sorgt dafür, dass Emissionen verringert/eliminiert werden und der CO₂-Gehalt der Atmosphäre nicht weiter steigt ("Wasserhahn")
#CDR Carbon Dioxide Removal ist wie eine "Negative Emission" und senkt den CO₂-Gehalt der Atmosphäre ("Abfluss")

Mind-blowing that SAI #SRM is taken seriously.
As is deabte about geoengineering #CDR #BECCS #DAC #CCS to "save" 1.5 right now, while mitigation hasn't even been tried to take seriously/started to be acted upon. Reading this report takes me forever because it makes me furious.

But evironmentalists are like the people who hated anaesthetics because they wanted to punish women in childbirth for their wicked things done, which they did not do with men! is apparently also possible as a white man's argument for geoengineering. heraldscotland.com/news/15540151.…

There is one thing that doesn't seem to be clear for Parties at #COP27: The only “clean” oil, gas, and coal is the oil, gas, and coal we leave in the ground.

❗There is no fixing #FossilFuels, we need to ditch them ❗

#FossilsPhaseOut

A short 🧵
We cannot decarbonize oil, gas & coal. We need to #Decarbonize the economy, by ending reliance on #FossilFuels.

Fossil fuel producers are falling over themselves to sell their products as the cleanest dirty energy around. Don't by their lies.
Carbon capture & storage (#CCS) cannot make gas green, oil clean, or coal climate-safe.
Ample evidence demonstrates that CCS is:
🔻 Unnecessary for the rapid emission cuts we need,
🔻 Unproven at scale,
🔻 Unjust for communities on the frontlines of fossil fuel extraction.

STARTING NOW at #COP27 an essential event connecting the dots between patterns of racial injustice, inequality, and colonialism & #ClimateAction.

A thread 🧵

No #ClimateJustice without #RacialJustice. Image
Racially, ethnically & nationally marginalized communities are more likely than other populations to be adversely affected by the primary drivers of the #ClimateCrisis (aka #FossilFuels & #Deforestation) & the measures to address climate breakdowns.
In particular, #FossilFuels not only drive the #ClimateCrisis; they also erode the resilience of fenceline & frontline communities to the ravages of climate change, through their impacts on the environment and public health, compounding climate vulnerabilities.

On my way to #COP27 & during my stopover in London tuning in to follow the ongoing discussions of the #Article6.4 Mechanism Supervisory Body (read #CarbonMarket), where members are discussing methodologies for the mechanism & some of its activities: unfccc-events.azureedge.net/Article64third…. A 🧵
#NoOffsets: For the #Article6.4 mechanism to have any positive contributions to enhancing #ClimateAmbition, it must be clear that "credits" generated cannot be used for offsets. You cannot offset your way to 1.5C. #NoOffsets
Critically, members are discussing the potential for "removal" activities, but removals are not reductions and come with considerable risks for #HumanRights, reversals (i.e. when wildfires subsequently destroy a forest), etc.

Today, @BloombergNEF published its annual #CCS Market Outlook. The tl:dr is that, based on current announcements, CCS capacity is set to grow 6x by 2030. That’s 44% higher than what we expected last year. And it’s before you take #IRA into account. 🧵 with some key results: Image
(2/10) CCS is diversifying. Most of the capture will be happening in #industry and #power, rather that natural gas processing. And most of the CO2 will be going in the ground, not to oil wells for EOR.
(3/10) We’ve been saying transport and storage infrastructure could be a bottleneck. *For the moment* it doesn’t look like a problem. There’s more unallocated capacity than capture projects looking for a home for their CO2. This can change quickly, given all that Midwest #ethanol

(1/9) I’ve seen a lot of op-eds about how awful it is that #CCS was included in the #IRA. Most lack nuance, because they haven’t clocked that the #energytransition isn’t just about the power sector anymore. Sorry #energytwitter. So, a 🧵 on why carbon capture still has a place.
(2/9) First, I get this. I was a huge #CCS skeptic. Two things changed my mind: modelling pathways to #netzero for materials with my @BloombergNEF team, and the #BNEFNEO team's carbon budgets for industry. Sobering work that taught me a lot.
(3/9) Some industries just can’t do without CCS. Process emissions are just as harmful as combustion. And we’re past the point where abatement of emissions is enough. That means removals, which means #DirectAirCapture.

.@D_LittleproudMP🤥 lied on @InsidersABC this morning.

#CCS has *not* been implemented on a coal power station near him.

last gov't committed $35m to a trial that *might* capture up to 2% of a coal power station's emissions from ~2024 and truck it 100km to injection wells.
this is classic #CCS spin… politicians and industry talk about proposed trials as if they are operational major projects.

Key takeaways in this thread 🧵👇
Early this month, the @IPCC_CH published the Contributions of Working Group III to the Sixth Assessment Report.

The subject? Mitigation of #ClimateChange.

#IPCC #ClimateReport #ActOnClimate
Like previous #IPCC Reports, this one demonstrates:
🚩#ClimateChange is a present emergency
🚩Each increment of warming accelerates the scale & severity of the crisis
🚩Phasing out ALL #FossilFuels is the quickest & most effective way to end #ClimateChaos.
