I’ve been wanting to say this out loud for a while…
“ᴅᴀᴛᴀ ʟɪᴛᴇʀᴀᴄʏ” just doesn’t sit right with me.
I think I'd rather identify as data curious | critical | confident than data literate. Want to know why?
🧵a thread 🧵 1/8
Literate can mean:
1. having knowledge or competency in a specified area.
2. being able to read or write.
So riddle me this: do you need to be literate to be literate? 2/8
In the spirit of #datafeminism and challenging power, literacy is exclusive. It places reading and writing above orality. The OECD defines six levels of literacy, but ultimately it’s a binary of either being literate (have) or not (have not). 3/8

Delighted to be doing some work for @ODIHQ on how govt thinks about 'data literacy'

What does ODI mean by ‘data literacy’? theodi.org/article/data-l…

#DataLiteracy A picture of a graph drawn ...
In short, it’s ‘the ability to think critically about data in different contexts and examine the impact of different approaches when collecting, using and sharing data and information’, rather than the technical skills required in working with data
I’ve been looking at what various government documents say about data literacy (& those more technical data skills).

Most of this week I am attending the @gartner Data & Analytics Summit - EMEA (from inside my home office. yay!). I will be sharing my appreciation for some of the speakers/sessions in this 🧵as well as knowledge that I gained and think is worthy of sharing!

#GartnerDA
Morning started off well with a great session by @danielmintz on how to 'Break the adoption barrier'!

Colleagues are so used to have seamless access to data in their personal lives, while accessing data at work is an horrendous struggle. The gap is huge!

Participated in a Workshop around 'Creating an Effective Data and Analytics Strategy' with @mikerollings.

It contained some useful exercises that I will take with me in the discussions regarding @Vanderlande 's Data-Driven Strategy!

This map from @chefspencil declaring the "Top Cities for BBQ in the U.S.” has many folks on Twitter upset.

How can Seattle make the list when no cities from Tennessee or Texas grace the map?

🧵Lets take a look at the #data!

#BBQ #dataliteracy #MissingMemphis #Thread
There are two key components you should always be critical of when you are evaluating someone’s interpretation of data:
1.Measurement
2.Sample

Q. First, when @chefspencil created this map how were they measuring the quality of BBQ?

Uno degli argomenti affrontati sarà "Data for international health emergencies", illustrato qui: lincei.it/sites/default/…

Thread 1/n

LOVE being faculty at @MIT this semester for a class on #dataanalytics & #datascience. I tend to PM my mentees, especially women and #blackexcellence to start to prepare questions to ask. Too often people stay silent. Speak up. Never be embarrassed to show #curiosity.
Listening right now to mid-semester progress reports from teams and am feeling like such a proud #datascience #BigData #bigdataanalytics momma. Bear cubs doing good (well AND good in world)

LOVE that this is a space within @MIT that focuses on #SDoH and #equity.
Literally right now, hearing about a study on #socialmedia chatter as a driver of vaccines hesitancy driven by #Twitter - start postulate "cause/effect" by an incident that happens within days after a vaccine - like ppl automatically assume a death is "caused" by vaccine

Please help us welcome our next curator Darryl Takudzwa Griffiths. @BlaqNinja completed his Bachelors Degree in Computer Engineering at DUT, graduated in 2011. Due to struggling to find suitable employment he went on to study multiple certificates from bodies such as Microsoft.
He has certificates in N+ (Computer Networking), A+ (Computer Technician & Technical Support), Certified Ethical Hacking V7 (CEH v7), Offensive Security Certified Professional (OSCP). Sadly even with these, he could not secure his desired post so in 2016 he moved to USA.
Darryl was able to secure a job in a corporation that owns casinos as a system analyst & security architect. Within the same year he embarked on a Masters degree in Robotics & Artificial Intelligence Engineering. In 2017 he resigned from his post and started his own company...

#DigitalLiteracy - Why? Effective work today requires a lot of associated learning. @linuxfoundation @github #VersionControl #Visualization -- continuous learning is critical. Optimal tools & processes are probably not the ones you are using now (Matlab vs. Scikit-Learn)
Need an evolving understanding for what tools are available today to get your work done. If you want your business people to work with your #datascience team, they need to understand what data is and what it can do. Also helps to avoid chasing buzzwords and bling.
