#DelhiViolence | Today marks three years since anti-Muslim violence unfolded in northeast Delhi.

Here is a master thread of our coverage—ground reports, testimonies of survivors and in-depth investigations into the BJP and the Delhi Police’s complicity in the violence.
On 23 Feb 2020, a clash between a Hindu mob that gathered at Maujpur and anti-CAA protesters, who had occupied the road at the Jafrabad metro, marked the beginning of over three days of communal violence in the national capital.

The then deputy commissioner Ved Prakash Surya’s passive demeanour next to BJP leader Kapil Mishra seemed to send a clear message—the latter’s threats of violence had the support of the Delhi Police. #DelhiViolence

Easy for someone to sit in TV studios & recite quotes from the Holy Book like a softer & saner version of Zakir Nail, while denigrating @AmitShah as SPINELESS & demanding his resignation as @HMOIndia

Nothing wrong in questioning @AmitShah cause we all have a right to!
If governing as a @HMOIndia were as easy as sitting in Labs & TV Studios & reciting Data, Stats & quotes, then it would only take less than 30 Seconds to resolve this crisis, doesn't it!

If you had a SPINE, why don't you swap places with @AmitShah & do the needful?

If that's too much to ask, show some SPINE & stop referring to fellow panelists (who always support & justify these riots) on National TV as "MY GOOD FRIEND(S)"

“At around 1–1.30 pm, a right-wing Hindu mob of around two hundred men arrived near the protest site, carrying stones and chanting ‘Jai Shri Ram!’ We could see that they were with the police—we were on a rooftop, from where we were covering this.” bit.ly/3dEvcCm

#DelhiViolence | One year ago, northeast Delhi was engulfed in communal violence. It continued for over three days, killing at least 53 people. Forty of them were Muslim.

On 19 February, the Delhi HC granted bail to three men accused of killing Shahid Alvi during the #DelhiViolence. The court observed that the post-mortem report indicated a long-range shot, and then relied on an NDTV video that showed firing from the nearby Mohan Nursing Home.
Replug | The Delhi Police’s effort to sidestep any investigation of the role of Mohan Nursing Home is already stark in light of these and other grievous complaints. Alvi's case, a 25-year-old auto driver, casts it in an even more glaring light. bit.ly/3jCJ2oG
Replug | The police claimed that Alvi was shot dead by another Muslim protester on the terrace. The chargesheet did not provide an explanation for how or why this happened. None of the disclosure statements by the accused persons confess to the murder. bit.ly/3jCJ2oG

One of the key accusations regarding the #DelhiViolence is that it was a pogrom conducted with the help of the police force. Whether you believe it or not, how are you okay with the accused investigating a crime and implicating people?
That an agency under the same govt who's being accused of the crime cannot grant justice should be agreeable even if you support the govt and believe that the police had no role in violence.

Unless there's not even an ounce of democratic values left in your politics anymore.
If not an investigation by the Central govt, then who?

This is why we have a Parliament in place. To keep a government in check.

The investigation of #DelhiViolence must be led by a Joint Parliamentary Committee.

Running anti-Muslim propaganda/misinformation is not limited to “North Korean Channels” or “Godi (lap) media” or nationalist journalists/anchors in India. A thread. 1/n
Let's talks about @NDTV- Indian liberals favourite channel - and a story they ran last week on its website: “ISIS-Linked Couple Had Plans Of Suicide Attack In Delhi: Police Sources"
ndtv.com/delhi-news/jam…
The story, based entirely on unnamed sources, was their top story for some time, and uncritically pushes a government narrative that weeks of peaceful protests against the CAA were a “jihadist conspiracy” [sic].

Finally caught up w/ @iamjohnoliver’s episode on Modi last week. Clear, brilliant explanations about Gujarat - “when you are being asked about your role in the deaths of thoussnds, you simply don’t get to walk out of an interview”. Strategic quiet now returns. #DelhiViolence
Impressive research, Amit Shah’s heinous speeches, which Modi has not disavowed, & so well explained on Indian govt’s “diabolically clever two-step way” on #CAA_NRC_NPR , the new citizenship register plus Citizenship Amendment Bill -& the detention camps. This before last week.

Glad to see #DelhiViolence is not being ignored by MPs in Westminster: @TanDhesi. The Foreign Office junior minister @nadams says trade deals won’t be pursued at any cost. Will Britain be prepared to stand up for #humanrights and accountability in India?

#SupremeCourt declines to hear Harsh Mander today in his petition after SG Tushar Mehta adduces transcripts of his reported speech at #Jamia wherein he said there is no trust left in the courts & that ultimate justice has to be on the streets.

#CJI: We will sort this out first.
#SupremeCourt tells Mander's lawyer that if this is what he feels about the courts then it will have to be decided first whether he should be given a hearing at all.

A separate petition on #DelhiViolence to be heard now.
As advocate Karuna Nundy, appearing for Harsh Mander, seeks time to verify the alleged hate speech, SG Mehta says this is strange that he wants time for verifying his own speech but wants FIRs against everyone immediately.

My #DelhiViolence understanding:
1. Who Protested - Mainly poor and lower class targeted muslims, staunch leftists, ppl with least knwledge of CAA/NRC,Wannabes.

2. Who instigated - Leftists,Political propagandists,Ppl with intentions of dividing the country in the name of religion
Paid news agencies who turned every stone possible to make sure this looks like Hindu-Muslim.

3. Who benefited - Political rivals, Goons who wanted to manipulate their own people (and succeeded too at some extent), Paid news Agencies as their TRP took a leap.
#DelhiRiotTruth
Who suffered and died - Innocent 'Indians' only.

This was no pogrom but a strategically designed propaganda to make sure that every move made in order to make India a better country is maligned and tarnished.

Delhi Riots: Supreme Court agrees to hear on Wednesday plea by activists led by Harsh Mander seeking immediate registration of FIRs against Kapil Mishra and Anurag Thakur.

#DelhiRiot2020
Senior Counsel Colin Gonsalves mentioned the plea before the Bench headed by CJI SA Bobde against the decision of the Delhi High Court of deferring the matter till April.

Gonsalves tells the Court that the matter is urgent given that deaths are being caused daily
CJI Bobde says Court is not equipped to deal with such incidents.

"We are not saying people should die... We cannot stop things from happening... We can only deal with the situation after it occurs"

Court says it wishes for peace.

Matter to be heard on Wednesday

An important comment from @PriyamvadaGopal for those reporting on the situation in Delhi. This isn’t an equal conflict but deeply rooted in the Indian government’s systematic approach towards its Muslim minority population that has triggered this.

@sighyush At the Maujpur-Babarpur metro station, Hanuman Chalisa blared from speakers as men armed with sticks and rods stood by and chanted religious slogans. A senior CAPF officer, learning that we were from the media, told us to not meddle with this crowd. “Take the opposite road."
@sighyush In Babarpur, men of all ages congregated confidently outside bylanes, brandishing sticks and rods. Boys as young as 10, wielding rods, accompanied them. There were very few women.
