Practicing inclusion during COVID-19 means acknowledging the health and safety needs of all people, then taking steps to communicate and provide safe(r) and more accessible options for gathering.
#HarmReduction
This includes not only working to understand the reasons spaces may be inaccessible to individuals with varying needs, but also committing to following community-centered practices to improve safety for all. #AccessIsLove

Twitter Emergency Good & Bad News (Long Thread)

OK, I have Good News & Bad News

Bad News: The Alberta Government has Fucked up again and has further tried to ruin the life of a disabled individual

Good News: There is a way to fix the wrong that has been done to this person
I have to admit that late this evening I sat down and cried at all the atrocities that the Alberta Government has done to Albertans all over the province.

I also have to admit that every story that I hear, my heart breaks just a little bit more for the people that have no voice

Thread! CW: police violence

Friends, you know I donā€™t share violent content often but Iā€™m sharing video of a #MadisonWI black disabled high school student who was assaulted by police. Read the thread for the longer narrative courtesy of @AboutFreedomInc
Earlier this week, a Black high school student with a mental disability, who attends West High School, was failed by @MMSDschools and assaulted by @madisonpolice officers.
West High School staff called the cops on the Black disabled student (I havenā€™t heard why). The student left and went home. The cops came to the studentā€™s home and violently arrested them. The student was cooperative, but that did not stop the violence.

Disability is traditionally viewed through a privileged lens making it difficult to see disability in marginalized ppl/communities.

This working definition of ableism addresses gaps in the traditional framing of disability+ableism.

UPDATED WORKING DEFINITON OF #ABLEISM
-edited for length+clarity

#DisabilityJustice Twitter please uplift this story. A white male principal push & tore the braids out of an 11 year old black disabled girlā€™s head after she told him to not touch her as he was removing her from class for spraying perfume. Dane Co. DA is not pressing charges.
Here is the parent reaction. During the investigation the DA tried to get Child Protective Service records suggesting the mother abused her child. nbc15.com/content/news/Mā€¦

Deaf/Disabled folks need to show up for #PrisonStrike2018.

At least 60% imprisoned folks are Disabled. They are targeted for no/lowest wages and other discrimination: no access to ed, programs, services, info, mental/healthcare.

#DisabilityIncarcerated
#DisabilitySolidarity
#PrisonStrike2018 supports #Disabled/#Deaf ppl

Exhibit A: One demand's to end to Prison Litigation Reform Act #PLRA

PLRA's behind Deaf/Disabled imprisoned folks not being able to get support fr attys. If you struggle w English/can't get through complaints, nothing can be done.
Literally every #PrisonStrike2018 demand helps disabled immprisoned folks even more than abled folks. Take a look at the demands for yourself (linked) & commit to daily posts, convos, teaching, etc. w/i your Commmnity.

The "I can do anything except..." framing in Disability/Deaf communities is ableist.
I know that very few want to admit or discuss this but it needs challenge, intense scrutiny & deep reflection and conversation. Not necessarily here but I hope folks are having these conversations cuz this is harmful.
It runs counter to Disability Rights, Disability Justice and Disability Solidarity precepts and praxis. It allows society to continue to believe that others who are unable to do some things are inherently lacking which contributes to systemic societal marginalization.

#PuertoRico's imprisoned folks have been auctioned off to CoreCivic to be sent to AZ.
This despite opposition fr attys/orgs; concerns re healthcare at the AZ prison to which they'll be sent & CoreCivic's exploitative, dishonest & violent practices, as well as previous uprisings by PR's incarcerated folks who've been sent to mainland "US." periodismoinvestigativo.com/2018/08/departā€¦
A reminder that the vast majority of people imprisoned in #PuertoRico, just like everywhere else are Disabled, low/no income, indigenous/negatively radicalized.

This is a #DisabilityJustice+#RacialJustice+#EconomicJustice issue.

#PSA

Just bc jails "have larger populations of folks w #mentalillness than psych prisons (AKA "hospitals")" does NOT mean that folks in either receives actual support+love.

Some of you are peddling myths & institutionalization.

Complicate these convos.

#DisabilitySolidarity
MYTHS:

Folks w #mentalillness need to be locked away from society in ANY form of prison. Note: folks in psych prisons (aka "hospitals") used to be called prisoners.

Renaming jail "mental health facility" unmakes it a prison.

Jails/institutions don't exacerbate mental illness.
Please gather your ppl if they're out here claiming that jails are "mental health facilities" OR that folks w/ #mentalillness are better off locked away in other forms of prisons.

We're dying out here trying to explain this to yall.

Transinstitutionalization is not the answer.
