I have a dream that one day we will remember that when Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. went to Washington D.C. on August 23, 1963 to deliver an address at the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom,
his purpose was not to lull us to sleep with flowery visions of a seductive, yet elusive American Dream;

his purpose was not to soothe the racial tensions & social anxieties of his day with a sweet sounding hope for a better tomorrow;
his purpose was not to peacefully advocate for civil rights and patiently wait for a seat at the table - indeed, the so-called tables of opportunity had not been built to accommodate everyone;

It’s fantastic news that Michigan’s unemployment rate is lower than the national rate.

But... (you know what’s coming...A🧵👇🏾)
We have to ask realistically ask ourselves “how many of those who are ‘in the labor force’ are in FT (with solid benefits) vs PT work (w/little to no benefits)?”
We have to realistically ask “How many in the labor force are among the underemployed or working multiple jobs to survive?”

The #PublishingPaidMe convos are beautiful. Lately, I keep re-upping @annbauerwriter's 2015 @Salon essay, "Sponsored by my husband". THREAD salon.com/2015/01/25/spo…
I started getting paid to write newspaper & magazine articles in 2005. It's been 15 years. Throughout it all, working other full-time jobs is what paid the bills and allowed me to keep writing.
.@annbauerwriter's essay is beautiful and striking in its openness about class & privilege in creative industries. #PublishingPaidMe

This is a really nice feel-good article about fairness.

It's also a nice example of #ReproductiveJustice meets #EconomicJustice. ❤

"Before the $70K minimum wage, we were having between 0 and 2 babies born per year amongst the team ... And since the announcement - and it's been only about 4 1/2 years - we've had more than 40 babies."
In other words, many people who worked there wanted to bring children into their families but they simply couldn't afford to.

This thread are some of my notes from last weeks workshop titled:

'Future Paths for a Public Interest Internet Infrastructure'

Held at the @harvardkennedyschool.

Disclaimer: it was organized by @beatricemartini @C___CS and myself (@nielstenoever)
Politics in technology, such as standards and protocols, is often hidden. This is in part due to its complexity, but can also be an agenda to legitimize and protect a specific (capitalist) ordering of the network, industry, and society.
Contentious issues are moved from more obvious political spaces into Standards Development Organization in specific, and Internet governance in general, in order to obfuscate them.

Updated #Democrats 2020 Pres. Primary Candidates & Delegates Map begun mid-Mar. Now 23 candidates. So many candidates from higher pledged del. states is attempt to dilute 1st round majority vote (50%+1), forcing 2nd rnd, bringing Automatic del (not so supers) back into play.

August 2018, @DNC voted (as a concession to #Progressives ) to remove not-so-super automatic delegates, but only for 1st rnd voting. A real reform would have removed them entirely - hence the flood of Dem. candidates - an end run around to concession.

#PuertoRico's imprisoned folks have been auctioned off to CoreCivic to be sent to AZ.
This despite opposition fr attys/orgs; concerns re healthcare at the AZ prison to which they'll be sent & CoreCivic's exploitative, dishonest & violent practices, as well as previous uprisings by PR's incarcerated folks who've been sent to mainland "US." periodismoinvestigativo.com/2018/08/depart…
A reminder that the vast majority of people imprisoned in #PuertoRico, just like everywhere else are Disabled, low/no income, indigenous/negatively radicalized.
