officially turned in the first piece of original writing that isn't translation that I've managed to complete since I began employment at my current high-demand job last august, time to mentally check out and be this lil guy for the rest of my day off cuz what a vibe!!!!!!!
now that I have finally written the thing to be unlocked *đź’€ in ADHD*, I can officially boost @strangehorizons' 2023 fundraiser!! it's at $14,439 of its $15,000 goal, so we're just $561 away from 5,500 words of me going like this to explain the cosmology of #EverythingEverywhere:
if "the Everything Bagel and the googly eye are inverses of each other" piques your interest, well, that is expounded upon in my essay at length, through a Taoist framework

I love all my essays but I am especially fond of these two--about two of my favourite films recently--and thrilled that they are right next to each other at the top of my most popular essays:

Films that center older women are important. They keep showing us women with options.

We understand why women are denied a three-dimensional life, why their imagination is flattened out of daring to want any more than what they have. feministgiant.com/p/essay-the-me… #EverythingEverywhere

every time I sit down to write about #EverythingEverywhere I realize more and more how massive my ideas about this movie are and how I'm actually outlining books' worth of material
*holds head in hands* the amount of taoist philosophy I have to lay out to explain my read of the bagel
I think I'm going to have to painfully limit the scope of this particular one to just the philosophical aspects of the movie and save the chinese-american representation for another essay

Aight, beautiful people! Let’s talk about the movie #EverythingEverywhereAllAtOnce (share your thoughts too!) #Spoilers

First, I wanna make it clear that I think this is a deeply artistic and well-done illustration of the plight and beauty of the human experience.

A thread 🧵 Joy, Waymond, Evelyn and Gong Gong sit in the IRS Office.
.I believe Humans have only ever been meant for the here and now.

But the universal plight of being human is the way that the twistedness of the cosmos fractures us beyond where and when we’re supposed to be:

Pain/suffering
Anxiety
Jealousy
Regret
**Hope

.Even hope— that forward-oriented trust in a reliable source or person— is a secondary symptom of suffering, of the twistedness of the cosmos.

If everything was as it should be here and now,

there would be no need for hope.

One of the things I love most about @A24's @allatoncemovie is that it centers an older woman of colour and all the lives she could have had feministgiant.com/p/essay-the-me… #EverythingEverywhereAllAtOnce
Michelle Yeoh is Evelyn, a Chinese-American woman, who is called on to jump between universes–”’verse jump” in the film’s vernacular–to accumulate skills from the alternative lives all the other Evelyns are living to save the multiverse from a “great evil”
White women are allowed sliding doors in mainstream films, e.g. Gwyneth Paltrow who was 26 years old when she starred in Sliding Doors in 1998. Michelle Yeoh is 59. To ponder “what if” and take stock of your life at 26 is not the same as when you are 59. #EverythingEverywhere

“Demos are 46% white, **21% Asian**, 17% Hispanic/Latino, 12% Black.”

Case study for indies: @A24 did it right with a measured rollout and active engagement of Asian Americans. Over half of viewers of #EverythingEverywhere @allatoncemovie are nonwhite.

CRAZY RICH ASIANS did it at the studio level.
SHANG CHI too.

But #EverythingEverywhere’s whole program has *leaned into* it.
Communities of color and other marginalized groups aren’t just sources of eyeballs and wallets. They’re critical amplifiers who can resonate with the message of a product, brand or media creation they love—memeing, remixing. echoing it—and they WILL get you your early momentum.

Everything Everywhere All at Once is the perfect menopause allegory film. I don’t care if that’s not what The Daniels had in mind when they wrote and directed it. It’s art. It’s out there. And my menopause claims it! feministgiant.com/p/essay-the-me… #EverythingEverywhereAllAtOnce

a wuxia cooking competition show called ENTRÉE THE DRAGON
all the pressure of chopped, except your competitors are leaping over your head like “above you!!!” to get to the ice cream maker
there is no clock. there are just long, meaningful looks, random gusts of wind that come from nowhere, and a soundtrack that gets ever more frantic

Less is not always more. Sometimes more is more. See EVERYTHING EVERYWHERE ALL AT ONCE. A triumph of the more. The Daniels (@Daniels) find meaning in the all-at-onceness of our metamodern existence. In the everything and everywhere.
@Daniels When your eyes are welling up amidst hot dog fingers and a nihilistic spinning bagel, you know that you’re having a unique cinematic experience. And the match cut on action throughout different realities deserves special attention and praise. Reminded me of Sherlock Jr.
@Daniels But these seamless cuts take enormous effort and planning, especially at the volume and pace of #EverythingEverywhere. The Daniels have always had an eye for patterns and continuities and meanings in the realm of the absurd. This is a culmination.
