On va en profiter pour présenter les protocoles BGP et DNS, que vous connaissez peut-être déjà. Ces deux loustics sont un support indispensable du réseau internet mondial, mais ils ont causé pas mal de soucis chez Facebook hier.
Tout d'abord, parlons DNS, ou Domain Name Service.
Le DNS, c'est toute une organisation qui vous permet de retenir des adresses faciles comme facebook.com au lieu de devoir mémoriser l'adresse IP de chaque service que vous utilisez.

Initial speculation suggested the issue was caused by a Domain Name System (DNS) issue. This is because the DNS is like the internet's phonebook. It links URLs and hostnames in your browser's address bar to the correct IP address where the website/webpage is hosted.
However, experts suggested that DNS is just the symptom and the underlying issue is Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) routing. The BGP routing system gives information the correct routes to take on the data superhighway.

...meldet jedes AS an die Peering-Partner, für welche Adressbereiche es Pakete entgegennimmt. Das geschieht über das "Border Gateway Protocol", kurz BGP. Von verschiedener Seite wurde berichtet, dass Minuten vor dem Ausfall Facebook massenweise Adressen bzw. Routen per BGP...
Es wird immer peinlicher.

What happened ?
It appears Facebook has inadvertently cut itself off from the rest of the Internet. More accurately, it mistakenly removed every "road sign" worldwide pointing at its network.
The "why" will be a very interesting post mortem to read. How hard is it to fix ?

1. Whether there's a *workable* backchannel for remote engineers to access not only the systems themselves, but crucially the comms tools and documentation they need.
2. How well rehearsed of a disaster recovery plan they had for this kind of issue.
