#C4GenderWars T- 6mins. Had your tactical wee? Phone on mute, vocal lubrication to help you rant/cheer at the screen? Have a few @GussieGrips clinches while you wait.
*clenches. Dread to think what clinches @GussieGrips gets into...*shudders*
And we're...off! #C4Genderwars do your worst! The Scottish witches are waiting...

I’d like to think we played our part too with the #ResignSturgeon #ButeHouse demo which took place 3 weeks to the day on #Burns 25/1/22. Thank you everyone who came to speak, listen and show their dissent! It was a really good day and eventually paid off #Dissent #IndyActionNow
Sadly @JNHanvey couldn’t make it on the day but we were delighted @Peter__A__Bell stepped in at last minutes to deliver a powerful speech largely based on one he had already given in 2014, Scotland being no further forward towards independence once then under @NicolaSturgeon
Professor Alf Baird also dropped by to talk informatively about decolonisation which was the perfect accompaniment to @SSalyers2 on Scottish Sovereignty and what it means. @yvonneridley spoke eloquently on the issue on many of our minds, the #GRRBill and it’s effect 👏👏👏

Our public conversation about LGBTQ+ rights, and trans rights in particular has skipped the rails in recent years. Deadly boring, centrist positions are now commonly denounced as ‘radical’ and ‘going too far’. Yes, this mega🧵is a love letter to Theresa May’s LGBT Action plan.
In 2018, the government published an LGBT Action Plan, based on a major survey, consultation with the movement and collaboration with the community. It was pretty good! Here are just some of the things it included:
A commitment to publish ‘comprehensive guidance for schools on how to support trans pupils’. Just listen to that framing! Now there is widespread *fear* about whether guidance (when it comes) will support trans pupils or those who seek to marginalize them further...

Since both cases happened under the existing law, clearly they have nothing to do with the #GRRBill. By all means criticise the Scottish prison service's policy regarding trans women, but don't spread misinformation, Joanna.
And also, @joannaccherry, please remember that half of trans people are trans men, who pose no threat to women. Bringing down the #GRRBill would deny legal recognition to trans men for no reason other than ideological hatred.
We don't have Census 2021 figures for Scotland yet, but the most recent estimate for the number of trans people in Scotland is 0.5% of the population, or about 24,000 people. If the same pattern as in England & Wales applies, half of these will be trans men.

Once upon a time, the Cabinet Secrety for Social Justice in Scotland wrote a little fairy tale about the Gender Recognition Reform Bill. Are you sitting comfortably, children? Then she will begin...#NoToSelfID #SackTheGRRBill @ShonaRobison 1/

If what we witnessed was the very best of the Scottish Parliament then Holyrood needs a new sign above the door "Abandon hope, all ye who enter here". The process was shameful, amateurish, rushed and lacking in curiosity. 2/ Image
The article doesn't mention women once, you know that group of people impacted if now anyone in Scotland over 16yrs can apply to change legal sex and magically become female. Still, who cares about the potential impact on more than 51% of the population?

It should be noted that the rhetoric surrounding the innocent administrative process for a GRC giving applicant a new birth certificate is not all it seems
No safeguarding, DBS , background checks , just 3 months of 1/
living in your new chosen identity with all the paperwork . This new p/work seals your past , no matter your history, see above , unless you divulge your criminal activities you have a clean sheet
Employers can't ask your deadname to check you out 2/
Access to women & girls , in wards, prisons, changing rooms ect all now a foregone conclusion bcos you have legally (important ) changed your sex (sex not gender,)
So ANY MAN after 3 months has a free reign to access SSS 3/B

Yesterday I spoke out in support of Scottish Secretary's decision to invoke Section 35 to block the rushed and dangerous #GRRBill passed by Holyrood. I did so because it is clear it has implications for our equality act in the rest of the UK, and there are serious safeguarding
concerns for children and adults. I believe it is important that all services and areas of society that need to be reserved for biological women can continue to offer these because they are desperately needed in prisons, rape shelters, hospital wards. I am deeply concerned
that children as young as 16 or 17 could change their "legal sex" under this proposed Bill, I think it's much too young to embark on life changing pathways with many unintended consequences, and the science in this area is developing, not well evidenced, and not unanimously

Scottish Green MSP Maggie Chapman on @LBC just now said that for the UK Government "even to threaten to act is entirely inappropriate" and they would be "playing roughshod with devolution". #GRRBill
Tom Swarbrick asked her if she thought children as young as eight should be able to change legal gender, to which she replied "we should be exploring that".
She went on to say that it is "very clear when we talk about sex being binary in GCSE...[it] is a gross over-simplification of what is going on" and we need to consider "how our bodies express hormonal relationships".

The idea that the Scottish Gender Recognition Reform Bill was ‘rushed through’ is complete nonsense. Here, in excruciating detail is *why* it is nonsense, and why this is something no serious person should be saying: 🧵
Consultation 1 on #GRRBill ran from 9 November 2017 to 1 March 2017. There were 15,697 responses. 60% of respondents supported proposals to introduce a self-declaration system for legal gender recognition.
Consultation 2 was on a draft #GRRBill. This ran from 17 December 2019 to 17 March 2020. 17,058 people responded. The majority of respondents were in favour of the draft bill.

While Scotland waits as Westminster decides whether to stop @ScotGovFM from passing legislation that will impact the whole of the UK (allowing anyone over 16 to change their legal sex, #GRRBill), we direct your eyes to the next ideological bill to be passed through Holyrood 1/
The phrase you'll be hearing constantly will be "Conversion Therapy" & you need to remember this is yet another attempt at corrupting language. The definition is so broad that if you dare to ask if the girl claiming she's a boy is absolutely sure, that's conversion therapy 2/
The "End Conversion Therapy" petition was started by @ECTScotland (anonymous little group of @scottishgreens leaning activists) who conveniently conflate pressure on LGB people to abandon their sexual orientation with explorative therapy into people questioning their "gender" 3/

📣#GRRBill FINAL VOTE TODAY

Duncan-Glancy (Lab): "Disproportionate barriers for transpeople... Recognised concerns exist on impact on women & single-sex spaces... we've listened to concerns & sought the best possible evidence"

Barriers are in place for a reason - safeguarding.
Cole-Hamilton (LD): VAWG huge importance to him.
"Clear that no provision around changes in #GRRBill create new or additional threat to women. Making it easier to obtain a GRC does not change who can or is likely to access Single-Sex Spaces."
🤔Clipped for posterity... we'll see.
CH: "No SS or protected space currently requires the presentation of GRC/BC for entry. Neither are seen as valid ID. Trained staff undertake dynamic risk assessment as to whether it is appropriate to grant admission to that person. That goes for prisons as well." #GRRBILL #KPSS

#GRRBill Stage 3 Debate (Day 2)
Group 19: Data collection

LAST ONE!
Three amendments. Introduced by Pam Gosal
Pam Gosal (Con): "Data collection is key to understanding and analysing the impact of #GRRBill. As was made clear by Reem Alsalem data collection on impact of self-ID model does not go far enough. Amd. 69 calls on data collection of detransitioners."
How many; Sex; Time period.
Describes session with detransitioners - permanent bodily changes. Expresse concerns about lack of data.
Since #GRRBill remove protections for children, "many young people risk making rushed decisions they might later end up regreting and without adequate support"

#GRRBill Stage 3 Debate (Day 2)
Group 18: Reporting

Rachael Hamilton (Con) introduces the group

Will be doing less tweeting on this one - I'm tired! 🥴
Amendments are asking for more data collecting to monitor and report on the impact of #GRRBill
Duncan-Glancy: Would want data on prisons but accepts could identify an individ.
Scrutiny of reasons for denying a GRC.
Greene states has been difficult to get data on reasons for denying GRC.
Robison - gives commitment to collect data where it's outwith their remit. Thinks amd. 124/125 "disproportionate" (report every 6m instead of 1yr). Provisions with Duncan-Glancy's amds. #GRRBill

#GRRBill Stage 3 Debate (Day 2)
Group 17: Gender identity healthcare

Pam Gosal (Con) introduces the group
Only 3 amendments in this group. Then two more groups to go
Gosal: amendment 62 - to measure the impact #GRRBill has on 'gender identity services'. Must be independent org that isn't receiving funding by ScotGov to avoid bias

Oh, Gosal is *aware*🔥
Greene (Con) - Amd. 132 3yrs to report on access to mental health support, waiting times and whether nespoke pathway is needed for those applying for GRC. Notes 4 years waiting list for Sandyford.

Hamilton - amd. dropped at Stage2 because HealthSec looking into pathways #GRRBill

Group 16: Operation and impact of the Act

John Mason (SNP) introduces the group
Starts with his own Amd. 122 - concerning prisons #KPSS
Prisons have featured prominetly, esecially who should be in which prisons.
Cabinet have said they are reviewing prisons guidance. Told that "each case is currently decided on its own merits" #GRRBill #KPSS
Mason: "Someone born as a man, but identifying as a woman, could be placed in women's prison if reckoned not to be a threat to women & also if reckoned to be at risk in the men's prison. Important that risk to the prisoner & other inmates is taken into account." #GRRBill #KPSS

#GRRBill Stage 3 Debate (Day 2)
Group 15: Review of the Act

Jackie Ballie introducing the amendments in this group (there are a lot... again).
Amendments expected to ensure Government can monitor the impact of #GRRBill and reviewed over-time.

Ballie and Duncan-Glancy expect first review within 3 years.
Findlay (Con) - Amendment 83A is about disclosure for offender management purposes.
Mentions new UK statutory instrument - no longer an offence to reveal GRC for purposes of offender management.
Am. 84 - any review to incl. impact of prisons and women's safety in prisons #GRRBill

#GRRBill Stage 3 Debate (Day 2)
Group 13: Interaction with the #EqualityAct 2010, the concept of sex, and single-sex services.

I'm gonna need some gin after this I think 🥴
Hamilton (Con) pressing the matter of recent @ForWomenScot judgement and impact on the #GRRBill.
Robison (SNP) states there are no changes to any protections under the euqlaity act. The bill does not amend the EA10. Judicial ruling doesn't impact the bill.
Thomson also pressing.
@ForWomenScot Stating that the #GRRBill doesn't alter the EA10, therefore not relevant, apparently.
"Bill provides reassurances that this doesn't modify the EA10."
Robison saying it's unnecessary to pick apart EA10 because it would be "confusing" and not needed.

Stage 3 Debate on Amendments and Final Vote

Group 8: Background checks for applicants
We're back on the issue of protections and safeguards...
Finlay again: "Vital there are as many safeguards for women/girls as possible. We already know that men with a history of abuse will use any loophole they can to target vulnerable women."
Finlay states that his amendments "seek to add further protection to women and girls".

Ruth Maguire (SNP) - Tables amednments in relation to single-sex spaces. Prevent a person with a history of DV obtaining GRC without further scrutiny. Specific DV check #GRRScotland

Listen to what @FergusEwingSNP asks of @ShonaRobison here:

scottishparliament.tv/meeting/meetin…

Listen to her reply.

This is, to the *very best* of my knowledge, the BBC poll she is talking about 👇
Shona Robinson: "I could point to the BBC poll conducted earlier this year, that showed support for this bill - particularly among women, actually - and *SUPPORT FOR REDUCING THE AGE TO 16*..."

It was 53% vs 31% AGAINST lowering the age limit.

Liar.

Tonight during the #GRRBill debate, and prior to voting for the relevant amendments, @ShonaRobison told Holyrood that this BBC poll showed Scots *support* lowering the minimum age of applicants from 18 to 16 👇

Scottish parliament just voted 59 to 64 against an amendment that would have prevented registered sex offenders from being able to #SelfID under the proposed #GRRBill.

No democratic mandate whatsoever for any of this...

Shouts of *shame on all of you* from the gallery! 💪
"TherEs nO conNNecTioN beTweEn the TwaNs C0mUniTY aNd $eX oFfendErs!" we hear, over and over again, ignoring the anecdotes and evidence to the contrary, with varying degrees of credulity.

Why vote to make sure they can get a GRC then? WHY?

@StephenFlynnSNP, new Westminster SNP leader, has just been interviewed on Radio Scotland. He supports the contentious #GRRBill he says because of this story. The story of a female who declared themselves a man but died from a female-specific cancer 1/ archive.vn/G9lev
It's a fascinating story to use as justification for self ID, but probably not in the way Mr Flynn thinks. Self ID allows you to change your certificated sex, including the single sex/gender marker on their NHS record. If you change this from F to M & you won't 2/

In the absence of a Xmas miracle the Gender Recognition Reform Bill will pass on 21st Dec. However, if MSPs of ALL parties felt insufficient protections are in place for women & children voted against the Bill, we could get that miracle. Our main hopes lay with @ScottishLabour 1/
The single @ScottishLabour MSP on the committee dealing with the #GRRBill (@GlasgowPam) voted for the Bill at Stage 1. Labour then whipped their MSPs to vote for the Bill at Stage 2. With most of their amendments rejected at Stage 2, we're hoping @AnasSarwar will 2/ #NoToSelfID

@ManduReid's leadership has will sadly become knownfor dismissing expertise & the majority view of Party members on self ID.

The Party's assembly was clear in its support of single-sex spaces, yet #wep #groundhogday brings back the same tired motion that was rejected previously
@ManduReid This week Reem Alsalem, the UN #VAWG rapporteur wrote to Hollyrood to intervene on similar self ID policies (#GRRBill).

It is unacceptable to WEP party members that her voice, alongside ours, should be dismissed.
@WEP_UK #IDEVAW2022 #16DaysofActivism

The Party bought a self ID motion that was rejected until the membership was consulted (thank you Sophie Walker).

The Party stalled for years, and when a version of a consultation was conducted it rejected self ID.
