22 years since Columbine, we still have a serious epidemic of Gun Violence in this country.

The solutions are straightforward but sadly there are still many opponents to change who still push the lies that their rights would end up being infringed on.
(2/5)
Nobody is infringing on anyone’s individual rights. We’re calling for background checks on PEOPLE, not guns. Mandatory Safety courses for PEOPLE, not guns. Stricter negligence penalties for PEOPLE, not guns. This isn’t about just the guns, it’s the people too.
(3/5)
Many law abiding Gun owners are in favor of these reforms. Sadly, the National Rifle Association is lobbying for a status quo that sees countless of American lives lost to what seems to be an endless amount of tragic shootings.

Today's the anniversary of the Senate’s deadly failure to pass gun violence prevention reform via the filibuster.

What happened on 4/17/13 shows exactly why we must #AbolishTheFilibuster — & why we must stop at nothing to push the Senate to pass background checks today.

Thread
The legislation that was killed on the Senate floor 8 years ago today was in response to the Sandy Hook shooting, where 20 first-graders & 6 school employees were senselessly murdered.

Americans across the country, DEMANDED Congress strengthen our weak gun laws. @NewtownAction
In response, the Senate took up a series of gun reform bills. The reforms included a bipartisan bill to expand Brady Background Checks, aka “Manchin-Toomey”.

Why background checks? A shocking 1 in 5 guns in America is sold without a background check.

Don’t feel bad, @WCCO. I am a MN @MomsDemand volunteer and #CD8 constituent & I asked @RepPeteStauber to vote yes on #HR8, the reasonable bill to expand background checks on more ways guns are transferred in the US. 1/x

.@PeteStauber’s response was to vote No & send me a letter that included lies about the bill which he also posted on his Facebook page prior to the vote. 2/x
Anyone who can Google can find a copy of #HR8. Here’s the part which says the requirement that private transfers must first go to a licensed dealer in order to conduct a background check does NOT apply to temporarily loaning guns to friends for hunting*. #FactCheck @WCCO 3/x

There was a mass shooting in America last night. Sadly that is not uncommon. Many of the victims were AAPI. Tragedy sits at the intersection of multiple broken parts of our society. To honor victims and save lives, we must make progress across all. #StopAsianHate (THREAD)
I’ve been asked if the violence against AAPI is new, and if it is getting better with the increased recent visibility. The answer to both is no. Discrimination/violence existed before COVID and it will continue after. And sadly, I don’t think we have seen the worst of it. 2/13
I can’t tell you how much it means to me and others that anti-AAPI violence has gotten attention. Biden’s mention in his speech was powerful. Now we need follow through. Give AAPI communities more resources/coordination. Give us tools to counter. Listen to our needs. 3/13

READ IT HERE: Chairman @RepJerryNadler's statement in support of #HR8, the Bipartisan Background Checks Act:

judiciary.house.gov/news/documents…
Gun violence impacts all of our communities. And no place is immune from its reach, including our homes, our streets, our schools, and even our places of worship. That is why we must take swift and decisive action to reduce the daily toll of gun violence that afflicts our nation.
#HR8 is sensible and effective legislation that requires background checks on all firearm sales. This simple change to close a gaping loophole in the law is one of the most effective steps we can take to address the scourge of gun violence in this country.

More than 141K Americans have died from gun violence during Donald Trump’s presidency — an average of over 100 people every day. Even more have been wounded. Here are 8 ways Pres. Trump, with help from the NRA, has failed to keep Americans safe from gun violence. ⬇️ #RNC2020 Image
Pres. Trump vowed to veto common-sense background check legislation: Over a year ago, the U.S. House passed #HR8—a bill to require background checks on all gun sales. The bill has sat on Mitch McConnell’s desk ever since, because he and Pres. Trump refuse to support it. #RNC2020
After the mass shootings in Dayton and El Paso, Pres. Trump promised to support life-saving Red Flag laws, but took no action. Red Flag laws allow temporary removal of firearms from those who pose a threat to themselves or others. #RNC2020

Sen. McConnell has been stalling progress for the American people for far too long.

#COVID19 relief for families and businesses, common sense gun safety legislation, and healthcare protections are just a few of the HUNDREDS of bills awaiting action on his desk.

A list...
It’s been 510 days since the House passed #HR8 -- a common sense, bipartisan, gun safety bill that could save lives.

Still no vote in the Senate.

Today marks 26 years since our namesake Brady Bill went into effect on Feb. 28, 1994. To date, Brady Background Checks have saved countless lives.

The story of the people behind this lifesaving law — Jim & Sarah Brady — is vitally important. #BackgroundChecksSaveLives

In 1981, Jim Brady was @WhiteHouse Press Secretary. He was shot in the head during the assassination attempt on Reagan. He spent the rest of his life recovering. #EndGunViolence #BackgroundChecksSaveLives
The shooter who left Jim Brady paralyzed could have been blocked from buying his gun under the Brady Bill.

He'd lied on the federal form when he bought the firearm. The tragedy had been prevented. #BackgroundChecksSaveLives

One year later: Nothing. Sen. McConnell has blocked #HR8—defying near unanimous support & making Republicans complicit in 100 gun deaths daily. Unacceptable.
I stand proudly today with House & Senate leadership—calling for a vote on #HR8. One year after historic House approval, we need a vote. Americans deserve & demand it.
On gun violence, there’s no lack of solutions. Lack of courage is the obstacle. But courage is contagious. Republicans must stand up.

THREAD: Today marks one year since the House passed #HR8, a bill requiring a background check for every gun sale.

In the year Mitch McConnell has refused a vote in the Senate, 40,000 people have been shot and killed.

I want you to hear a few of their stories. It's important.

Just minutes after I was on the Senate floor w/@ChrisMurphyCT & @SenBlumenthal to ask the Senate to pass universal background checks legislation—which Republicans blocked—reports broke of another school shooting. @senatemajldr, you can help us stop this. Let the Senate pass #HR8.
@ChrisMurphyCT @SenBlumenthal @senatemajldr After months and years of inaction—& far too many lives lost—there was the first sliver of hope in a long while that the President and Senate GOP would finally put the safety of our families over their allegiance to the NRA & do something to end the gun violence epidemic.
Now—after two more months of inaction—President Trump has betrayed his pledge to address this tragic epidemic. Once again, he’s chosen to abdicate his responsibility to keep our families and communities safe and has broken yet another promise he made to the American people.

Mitch McConnell said today that he can't call the Senate back in session yet because staff needs time to draft gun violence prevention bills. Yeah, right.🙄 Here are four pieces of legislation we already passed in the House that @senatemajldr could hold a vote on TODAY:

(thread)
1. #HR8, The Bipartisan Background Checks Bill would expand background checks on gun sales — including those at gun shows, over the internet or from private dealers –– that currently don't require a background check. Total no-brainer and supported by over 90% of Americans.
2. #HR1112 would close the Charleston loophole, which enabled Dylann Roof, the murderer of nine innocent churchgoers in Charleston, to get his hands on a handgun he would have otherwise been denied, due to a delay in his background check processing. This happens too often.

1/ If you have a Republican Senator, urge him/her to bring to the Senate floor #HR8 (expanding background checks to include firearm purchases at gun shows and over the internet) and #HR1112 (extending the number of days government authorities have to complete a background check)
2/ The current #backgroundcheck process allows a #gun purchase to proceed after 3 days, resulting in 4,800 gun sales in 2017 to individuals with #criminal records, a history of #mentalillness, and other disqualifying circumstances.
3/ #HR8 and #HR1112 passed in the House along largely party lines in February 2019. PS I'm aware that the .@NRA has shoveled heaps of cash, including #Russia-originated funds, into .@senatemajldr's campaign coffers, and that .@realDonaldTrump has threatened to veto both.

How effective are expanded gun background checks?

Academic research offers that background checks have a potential to reduce crime, but in practice, results are mixed.

It is a first step. Do nothing? Close the private sale loophole next.

Not even one week later, another tragic mass shooting. I am thinking of our fellow Americans in #ElPaso.
But let’s be clear: these two incidents weren’t even the only two mass shootings in the past 7 days. See for yourself >> massshootingtracker.org/data
The numbers are shocking, but we must also remember that each life lost to gun violence is not just a statistic. Their loved ones will never see them again. And survivors may endure lifetimes of physical and mental trauma.

Today is #NationalGunViolenceAwareness Day. As a former prosecutor, I've seen 1st-hand the kind of damage guns can cause to communities and families. 58% of American adults say they or someone they care for has experienced gun violence. It is time to put an end to this bloodshed.
Approximately three million American children witness gun violence every year. Firearms are the second leading cause of death for American children and teens and the first leading cause of death for Black children and teens. #EnoughIsEnough, our children deserve better.
Nearly 2/3rds of gun deaths are suicides. The US gun suicide rate is 10x that of other high-income countries and access to a gun increases the risk of death by suicide by 3x. Gun suicides are concentrated in states with high rates of gun ownership. #EnoughIsEnough.

Today’s historic gun safety victory in Congress is a testament to courage. Just eight weeks into the new Congress, courage is what inspired the House to pass #HR8.
When it looked like the gun lobby would forever silence any debate on stronger gun laws, courage shone through. Courage embodied by relentless advocates and resilient survivors, and exemplified by leaders who ran for office and won on the promise to fight for a safer future.
Tragically, the cost to our communities while we waited over a decade for this progress has been far too high. Hundreds of thousands of American lives have been lost. Far too many families and communities, including my own, have been forever changed.
