A note as a private citizen, not a journalist (if you'd allow me that separation):
To all the BJP supporters cheering, celebrating, and gloating about the results - consider doing something for the rest of us. Tell us we are wrong. Not with angry, hateful, boastful words.
But with words that assure us that, this resounding victory does not make you think you are no longer accountable to those who did not vote for you. That our questions do not make us unworthy of being treated as equal citizens of this country, with valid concerns and voices.
That you do not condone the violent language Mr Shah just used on stage against us. That you do not condone that this win is being greeted with Hindu chants outside the BJP office. That "secularism," like the PM scoffed, is not a dirty word to you. That hate speech is not okay.

I'm always hesitant to jump to the Trump comparison, but the anti-immigration rhetoric employed in the #IndiaElections2019 hit close to home. Much like Trump, Modi has taken a hot button issue to drive his nationalist agenda. bbc.com/news/world-asi…
The NRC is a longstanding saga on the Indo-Bangladeshi border, complicated by ethnic and communal tensions. But the BJP has tried use it to whip up support over curbing the influx of Muslim immigration & protecting India's borders - much like Trump.
But the key point here is as many as 2m Hindus have also been left off the citizenship list, tangling the BJP's otherwise Hindu majoritarian vision for India. The process is fraught, millions are fighting in court & detention centres are full - much like our own border saga

1/ NEW WORKING PAPER on #InternetShutdown-s and protest in #India based on thousands of data points from 2016. Bottom line: shutdowns are followed by a clear *increase* in violent protest & have very ambiguous effects on peaceful demonstrations. #KeepItOn papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cf…
2/ India has recorded by far the highest number of shutdowns of any country in the 🌏 - a staggering 134 (per @NetShutdowns) just last year, largely in an attempt to quash protest. What this paper shows is that this kind of repression does not achieve what it sets out to achieve.
3/ I used data from @ACLEDINFO+@icews on 1000s of violent & non-violent events, teasing out categories of organizing parties. AFAIK this is the 1st statistical analysis of large-scale blackouts and offline dissent at this scale, in the country where they happen the most - #India.
