My hero mom successfully donated one of her kidneys to my dad @NM_Transplant last week! As a family with Polycystic Kidney Disease @PKDFoundation we have prepared for this for decades since my grandpa was diagnosed and transplanted in 2001. 🧵 Image
As a 7-year old, I remember feeling so confused that someone else’s kidney was functioning in my grandpa. Fast forward to pharmacy school @UIPharmacy when I learned of the immense impact a transplant pharmacist could have on the transplant process.
Close monitoring of immunosuppression, patient and family counseling, and participation in transplant selection committees - all pushed me to pursue a career in clinical pharmacy. I wanted to help families like mine through this process.

"#Dengue in France: tropical diseases in Europe may not be that rare for much longer" theconversation.com/dengue-in-fran…

A bit like #scabies, we do have Neglected Tropical Diseases in Europe
#ntds #beatntds
(1/n)
Few dozen cases of local dengue transmission, more than has been observed before (bit of a theme for #infectiousdiseases in the recent past...)

An infected traveller would have returned to France, been bitten by a local mozzie, with onward transmission from biting new humans.
Seeing more mosquito-driven disease in Europe. Loads of #westnile virus in the lowlands in northern Italy, plus a few cases across other Euro countries

Le infezioni batteriche resistenti agli antibiotici

Ma si possono trattare con un virus.

A thread

#antibioticresistance #antibiotics #bacteria #infectiousdiseases

1/n

#climatechange🌍🌡 is the greatest threat to human #health👩⚕️.
Here are 5 ways climate change is impacting our health and how the future could look like if no action is taken.
A 🧵. 1/11
#climatechange #globalwarming #savetheplanet #climate #climatecrisis #climatechangeisreal
1. Extreme Heat🌡: Heat waves are deadly⚰. One study attributed more than 1/3 of heat-related deaths to climate change. Future warming could result in an additional 2K - 10K deaths/year in each of 209 U.S. cities. 2/11
Heart attacks & strokes can result from prolonged exposure to heat. The heart has to work harder to pump blood and minerals are lost through sweat. Extreme heat can also worsen pre-existing conditions such as kidney damage, especially for vulnerable populations such as 👴👵. 3/11

1) Cephalosporins are a commonly used class of antibiotics --> what's not so commonly known is that some members of this drug class can cause major bleeding complications!

4 groups of cephalosporins have been implicated in this problem!
2) This is based on the different side chains attached to position 3 of the cephem nucleus!
The first and largest group is the NMTT (N-methylthiotetrazole) side chain containing group --> cefamandole, cefotetan, cefmatazole, moxalactam and cefoperazone!
3) Other groups include MTDT and HTT side chain containing cephalosporins as well as cefoxitin which doesn't have any side chains attached to the 3 position of the cephem nucleus!

I'll be adding short important points which would hopefully help in remembering certain concepts during #PLAB preparation, to this thread🧵every now and then as I take them out from my scattered notes. Feel free to comment your tips and tricks which would help others, as well 👇
Please don't take any of these as medical advice 😂🙏. Real life stuff is much more nuanced. These are just clinchers for the sake of the exam.
#PLAB
1. Drug contraindications...
-Avoid BAN drugs in Asthma (Beta blockers, aspirin, NSAIDS) &
-DAMN drugs in diarrhoea (Diuretics, ACEIs, Metformin, NSAIDs)

They are wise, and know far more about #InfectiousDiseases and #epidemiology than I do

It is important to look at what this report does and does not say

@COVIDSciOntario
I don’t think there is anyone who would disagree with the message in these slides

Closing schools is a bad thing

Remote learning is disruptive and can lead to worse educational outcomes

As with everything in this #pandemic, poor and marginalized families far worst

But…
In this slide the #ScienceTable argues that vaccination reduces the risks to children

Currently less than 50% of the 5-11 cohort is double vaccinated

Once again the risk is greatest for our #children with comorbidities or low socioeconomic status

They admit they don’t know…

Should #children be vaccinated against #COVID19?

Our review outlines the points to consider in weighing up whether all healthy children under 12y should be vaccinated against COVID-19.

As specialists in paediatric #InfectiousDiseases and #Vaccinology, we recognise enormous benefits of and strongly support child vaccination programmes

@Dr_Petzi @PittetLaure @adamhfinn @ajpollard1 @nigeltwitt

@unifr @unige_en @BristolUni @OxfordVacGroup @MCRI_for_kids @UniMelb
Our review highlights that the balance of risks and benefits of COVID-19 vaccination in children is more complex than in adults as the relative harms from vaccination and disease are less well established in this age group.

Delighted to share a new study from our lab on the role of gut commensal fungi mycobiota in shaping the human protective IgG antibody repertoire @CellCellPress cell.com/cell/fulltext/…
During immunosuppression ( organ #Transplant #chemotherapy ) or in diseases such as #IBD #crohnsdisease, gut #mycobiota can turn into a “reservoir” of pathogens, BUT most people live peacefully with their fungi. Do they benefit from them? Do fungi benefit form us? Neutral rl.?
Fungi are considered a minor component of the gut #microbiome ( less than 0.1% of genetic material in feces), but we found that fungal biomass in the healthy human gut makes considerably more: up to 2%.

We are thrilled to launch our new initiative covid19vaccinetracker.com! Researchers around the globe are working to develop safe and effective #COVID19 #vaccines as soon as possible. How long will it really take? We've developed a simple resource to track progress-check it out 1/n
We collate & curate COVID19 #vaccine clinical trial data from @WHO & multiple other publicly available sources. Our tracker features vaccine candidates designed specifically to prevent #COVID19. We begin tracking vaccines once they are part of a registered clinical trial. 2/n
Using an innovative card-based system designed by our team, each vaccine candidate is given a summary card which displays the name, primary developer/sponsor, highest phase clinical trial underway, and shows the technology used to develop the vaccine. 3/n covid19vaccinetracker.com/tracker

Africa officially declared free of wild polio today. An amazing achievement, hard-won. Now only Pakistan & Afganistan left. If we can kill it off there it will become the second disease after smallpox to have been eradicated #Polio #InfectiousDiseases

telegraph.co.uk/global-health/…
Many other infectious diseases could be targeted for eradication. I think I'm right in saying the three biggest killers remain TB, Malaria and HIV in that order.....
But the numbers - and quality life years gained - by eradicating less widespread viruses like polio remain immense. Look at this chart showing the fall in polio paralysis and think of the suffering alleviated ...
