This is Carlos Gregorio Hernandez Vasquez.

Just 16 years old when he entered the US alone, on May 13, 2019.

He was a healthy child.

An optimistic child.

He was alone when he died 7 days later in a Border Patrol Station in Texas.

Carlos is the most recent of the #TrumpSeven.
2/ Carlos had 8 younger siblings who called him Goyito.

He loved playing soccer and music, especially piano and bass.

Carlos came to US to help support his brother Edgar who has special needs.

When he arrived in Rio Grande Valley (RGV), he was healthy.

3/ Children like Carlos are supposed to be in Border Patrol custody for 3 days or less.

Carlos spent SIX DAYS in McAllen BPS — without reason — instead of transferring to ORR custody.

Carlos (from Guatemala) was caged with people from Honduras, El Salvador, Brazil, Nicaragua…

Wondering how to carry your activism forward in the wake of #Lights4Liberty? Start here.

1. Donate to a local host organization in your area that is doing frontline support work for migrants and those in detention. Make it a monthly donation if you can. bit.ly/2XRpiar
2. Call your US representative and senators daily and demand an end to US concentration camps, accountability for DHS, ICE and CBP, and an end to human detention for all migrants.

(202) 224-3121 is the Congressional switchboard.
3. Volunteer with a local immigration rights advocacy organization. Our host organizations are a good place to start. bit.ly/2XRpiar

People across the USA (and world!) peacefully championed human rights and kindness on July 12, 2019.

We lit candles, sang, and prayed.

We vowed to #EndUSConcentrationCamps.

Lights For Liberty began with a moment.

Now @Lights4Liberty is a movement… 🗽

1/ “We are a justice seeking people, and we are singing for our lives.”

All over the world, people sang for immigrants, for refugees, for children taken from parents, alone and afraid.

We sang for justice.

We sang for our lives.

#LightsForLiberty ✨🗽

2/ @Lights4Liberty advocates gathered in all 50 United States.

Our community quickly became a massive movement, united together against the culture of cruelty.

This was the first of many peaceful events.

I attended #NetrootsNation this week, and though I am a liberal not a progressive there were plenty of great sessions. Thur was a session regarding the census with @EricHolder @vanitaguptaCR @AlexPadilla4CA as they were speaking word came that Barr would be joining Trump today😮
@EricHolder is kicking ass on the census, gerrymandering and local elections
Today I marched for the first time in Philadelphia for the #LightsforLiberty rally, hot as hell but wow, they shut down the streets and we filled them.

I haven't said much about the #ConcentrationCampsForKids at the border. Every time I want to sit down and write, there's another fire to put out. An asylum claim referred to court. Another #MuslimBan separation. An ominous letter from a government agency. (That was just today.)
The camps are the natural extension of the evil system of for-profit detention, which in turn is built on the tragically wrong assumption that detention/deportation is the only cure for breaking an immigration law, which in turn presumes our immigration law is fair and sensible.
A college professor of mine said it best: "The painful lesson here is that mistaken ideology can produce thoughtless cruelty in gentle, kind-hearted people." In other words, how pretty much every genocide in history started.

1/ Mariee Juárez was only 21 months old when she died after being held in Dilley Family Detention Center in Texas.

She was a healthy child.

A happy child.

She and her mother fled the violence of Guatemala.

Mariee died on US soil, of medical neglect.

First of the #TrumpSeven:
2/ Mariee at 19mos and her mom entered the US along our Mexico border on March 1 2018, and were transferred to Dilley FOUR days later…

Not THREE as legally mandated.

They were put in a cell with 5 other mothers and their kids, some of whom were sick. Especially one little boy.
3/ By March 11, 2018 — under a week after being imprisoned in a Dilley camp cell — Mariee had an “acute upper respiratory infection,” diagnosed by a physician’s assistant at Dilley.

She was prescribed honey packs and Tylenol.

She did not get better. 💔

Please share widely. Our personal reports of what is being done to children by our government on our behalf has been labeled as "fake news" by the president on Twitter. 1/X #lights4liberty #dontlookaway
I directly met with and participated in interviews with approximately 30 children (including infants and sibling groups) at the Clint Border Patrol facility over the course of four days last month. 2/x #lights4liberty #dontlookaway
Our entire team met with a total of approximately 60 children. A related team met with and interviewed dozens of additional children being neglected and abused in the Rio Grande sector the week prior. 3/x #lights4liberty #dontlookaway

1/ This is Jakelin Ameí Rosmery Caal Maquin, the 7 year old girl who died in U.S. Border Patrol custody.

Jakelin’s death was a tragedy. This thread explains why.

#NoKidsInCages #Lights4Liberty ✨🗽
2/ Jakelin liked to climb trees.

She jumped at a chance to come with her dad to the USA.

She thought she might get her first toy.

She’d just gotten her first pair of shoes.

Jakelin died in U.S. custody on Dec 8, 2018. She was 7.

Everyone asks how I cope with the human suffering and abuse I witnessed at the CBP facilities. I struggle to find the words to convey what I have seen. It was a defining event in my life. There was my life before, and my life now. I will never be the same.
The only way I know how to move forward is to take action. Because if I don't I will break under the weight of grief and rage. So, to anyone listening please light a candle on July 12 in honor of those whose human rights we have violated. They are people. People just like us.
Move forward. Take action. Join the warriors in the arena. It's scary but if I can do it, so can you. To my sisters @KristinMinkDC @ECMcLaughlin @merylnyc and all the others in the arena (you know who you are) I love you and I will stand with you until the end. That is how I cope
