Very pleased to share that my latest story from my time in @fredchanglab @UCSF is now accepted at @eLife. Control of nuclear size by osmotic forces in Schizosaccharomyces pombe doi.org/10.7554/eLife.…
Before I try my best to summarize it I want to thank all co-authors @fredchanglab, @ThomasGFai, @LiamHoltLab and @WallaceUcsf for organising the #QCBNet #NSFfunded hackathon.
We developed a quantitative model for nuclear size control based upon colloid osmotic pressure and tested key predictions in fission yeast. We called it: Model of the nucleus and the cell as “a vesicle within a vesicle”.

Undergrads & new grad students - NOW is the time to start thinking about applying for the @nsf GRFP!
A thread of advice I've accumulated on how to write a successful application...🧵

I applied to the NSF GRFP twice, & was successful the 2nd time; I chalk up that success to my advisors at RGGS, Carthage, & Marquette, & so most of the advice below comes from them.

First, what is the GRFP? Put simply, it's a competitive fellowship funded by the @NSF that replaces or supplements your graduate stipend & provides some funding to your institution. It is open to US citizens who are, or will be, grad students (MS & PhD) in #STEM fields.

Me: “I think it’s significant that this project was initiated by early-career scientists. It speaks to the prevailing culture in academia that allows the status quo to be perpetuated.

We felt that if we didn’t do the analysis, nobody else would.”

Feels a little cringe to quote myself, but I admit, I really needed to get that one out of my system.

I'm ready to have this convo, anytime. 👇

For now, 3 asks:
1⃣ Read the paper.
2⃣ Send it to people.
3⃣ Talk about it — here & elsewhere.

What does this mean for the STEM community & #NSFfunded science? What does this mean to *you*? And what should be done next?

Hey STEM community,

Preprint by me, @sara_kahanamoku, @ClumpedIsotopes, @algoriphagus, @vernon_morris & others

Unlike other papers, I am *not* delighted to tell you about this.

It's about how we choose what science is #NSFfunded.🧵1/10 A screenshot of the title p...
Each year, NSF gets thousands of proposals. They issue *publicly available* annual reports on funding rates broken down by PI race: nsf.gov/nsb/publicatio…

Report contents evolve each yr, so data gaps exist. But data on 1 million+ proposals from 1996–2019 reveal striking trends.
For over 20 years:
➡️Proposals by white PIs have been funded above overall rates
➡️Proposals by most BIPOC PIs have been funded below overall rates
➡️And the relative funding rate for proposals by white PIs has been *increasing*📈

These trends are also found in all directorates. A screenshot of the first f...

Drones, Fitbits and AI, oh my: Happy #WorldPenguinDay! Come learn about how #NSFfunded researchers from @PointBlueConSci study Adélie penguins at one of the windiest locations on Earth. #takeoverNSF

Can you guess what an Adélie penguin 🐧 and a salmon 🐟 have in common? #WorldPenguinDay

Both of these charismatic species exhibit what scientists call “natal philopatry,” which means they return to their birthplaces to breed!

Adélies often end up building their pebble nests very close to where they hatched. #takeoverNSF

New preprint!

Excited to share my first paper with @amykooz and others.

Here’s what we did: 🧵
Some background
The RElaxed Beliefs Under pSychedelics (REBUS) model by @RCarhartHarris & Friston proposes that increased neural entropy observed under psychedelics (psychs) relaxes the brain’s prior beliefs & their influence over incoming info. These priors shape our perception. Image
This may explain how psychs treat various mental illnesses; their common cause being pathologically overweighted priors. “I don’t deserve love”, for ex. This may also explain various forms of visual/auditory distortions under psychs. Belief that walls don’t move has less weight.

The approach we are taking with the course is that of an interdisciplinary research group focused on education. We will collectively inquire, learn, imagine, design & share our thinking over the course of the term.

We invite you to follow along & join in through #UWClimateEd ImageImage
The driving question of our shared inquiry will be:

How can we promote learning in order to create more just, thriving, and regenerative conditions for all Earthly beings, human and otherwise?

Together we will think across timescales, contexts for learning, and worldviews.
