Amateur astronomers around the world are noticing that something weird is happening to the Great Red Spot in Jupiter... observations are showing variability in just few hours. Stay tuned ... or even better, if you can take photos of Jupiter, do it!
Another busy day... I had to skip morning sessions at the #A3Dscimeet19 as I needed to do a couple of “urgents” things at the uni including marking quizzes from my tutorings and preparing an invitation letter for a PhD student visiting us in July...
But before I forget again, it is very important to say a big “Happy Birthday” to the @theskyentists co-host & awesome young astronomer & Science communicator @AstroKirsten as she just completed another full orbit around the Sun!

When I was in middle school I wanted to be an astronaut, but was told women couldn’t be astronauts. #SallyRide was older than me but she didn’t let that stop her.

It stopped me.

In HS I was the top student in every #math class I took til precalc. Didn't it was ok to have to work at being good at math. No adult recognized my potential and pushed me. I lost interest in spite of my math SAT score being higher than my verbal.

LAND QUESTION

It is no secret that the land qsn needs to be addressed in #Africa. Liberation without resource ownership is flawed liberation. #Mugabe knew this & @Julius_S_Malema saw it too. But my honest question is:

Are Africans ready to take charge of their resources? 1/10
@Julius_S_Malema & @FloydShivambu once visited #Zimbabwe in 2010. From that visit I’m sure he had a very thought provoking & a “Damascus” discussion with Mugabe on #PanAfricanism, #FreeEducation & #ResourceOwnership.

Those are the ideas that Malema stuck to till this day. 2/10
From 2010, @Julius_S_Malema & @FloydShivambu started active engagements on the land question. Its a question that a lot of black #SouthAfricans never asked. All the crime, poverty & drugs are due to the unavailability of those 3 pillars of #Independence

Is S/Africa ready ? 3/10

... sometimes solving one problem begets another. #Igbo culture most laudably seems to be pushed by those in diaspora, as seen on the social media. However, 90% of what is shown is mainly #masquerading and #dances. Very beautiful. Moreover, there is need to emphasis other aspects
Like marriage, farming, food, poetry, arts & crafts, industry, commerce, architecture etc. There has been a great awakening; most nostalgia and sometimes, a relapse because one can't compete with global trends. Idolatry is on the increase pitched unto 'say' Omenala, our #culture.
African Traditional #Religion (ATR) especially as practiced by ndi Igbo was just a tip of the iceberg about their culture. It was the culture of a typical Igbo person not to go hungry, as such manliness, was measured by the number of yam tubers one had in his barn and other #farm

Some interesting stats, which are not very surprising "over 9% of respondents say they experienced harassment at meetings or events hosted by the scientific societies. Of those who experienced harassment, 63% were women." #womeninstem #womeninoptics #LGBTinSTEM #optics #photonics
I've just had a quick read but the thing that struck me most, more than the stats was the personal stories in Appendix I - sadly these are stories I've heard from friends & colleagues who have attended scientific meetings & conferences. #womeninSTEM #womeninoptics #LGBTinSTEM

For #PiDay + #WomensHistoryMonth, I honor an eminent, glass-ceiling-breaking mathematician, Dr. Loretta Marion Murray Braxton. In the 1950’s, her 1st math prof in college in VA told her that she was in the wrong classes, b/c "only boys took higher-level math classes."1/14
Undeterred, Loretta Braxton won an NSF to do an MS in math in a top program at the University of Illinois, obtained a doctorate, and taught the 1st African American who formed a billion-dollar company, Reginald Lewis. #PiDay #Fearless 2/N
As a math teacher, professor, and 15 years as chair of the math department at @VSUTrojans, Loretta Braxton mentored several generations of math students, many of whom became teachers + college or university professors themselves. #BlackAndSTEM 3/14

@DougJones, you know I love ya, but DO NOT let this woman take credit for YET another problem Obama tried to solve but the GOP wouldn't work with him on. I'm sick to fucking death of this useless trash pretending she cares abt shit dems put the WORK into. praisecharlotte.com/943314/obama-u…
I happen to be an Alabama dem who worked my ass off promoting the initiatives that the Obama Admin also put the HARD work into, and frankly I am sick and fucking tired of her turning them into photo ops for HERSELF at the expense of the ppl the programs aim to help.
It's actually a disgrace that any dem worth their party membership will allow Princess Feckless to turn programs we care about into promo opportunities for herself. You are damn right I'm pissed. I've spent my life fighting for the programs she's taking credit for.

Let's make and retain #WomenInScience and #WomenInSTEM! Need some hints about where to start? HERE 👏 WE ✊ GO 👩🏽‍🔬
(with 📚 references!)
Ensure women are equitably represented in #scicomm multimedia, especially in video, so that young women can see themselves in #STEM

(@scifri does this as a matter of good journalism)
Also, ignore the haters:

Provide (or lead!) opportunities for young female-identifying lovers of STEM to hang out together, share their STEM interests, and represent that interest to other members of their community

#Famiglia - #Lavoro - #Scuola

Digging into some of the literature in advance of a talk I am giving next week on LGBTQ+ and STEM. #lgbtSTEM

Will tweet some 'highlights' from the literature: mdpi.com/2076-0760/6/1/…
LGBTQ+ rights in STEM are not better with age, and it is not just about waiting for the older generation to die off. #lgbtSTEM

mdpi.com/2076-0760/6/1/…
There's a great graph in the paper by Cech and Pham. This is the "workplace experience" of employees in US based STEM federal agencies. 3 = positive, 2 = neutral, 1 = negative. LGBTQ+ have a systematically worse of experience. #lgbtSTEM

Hi friends, happy new year 🥳🙌🧚 my New Year's resolution is to tweet about a person from an underrepresented group in science & technology every day, celebrating their contributions 🥰 if you know people that should be on my list, please let me know ❤️
First up is @anialdam 🤗 Madlaina is an amazing game designer, software engineer and community organizer. I have the pleasure to work with her as @wtm_ch leads. I know few people that are as passionate about the community as she is. She is a true leader and a great friend ☺️❤️
Today, it's time to celebrate @salad_milk_soup 🙌 she is an awesome software engineer, a great speaker and a true unicorn 🦄 I feel so lucky to have her as a friend and mentor. I love her no-bs attitude and at the same time her kind heart ❤️

The water in the pipeline cannot fix the leaks. Contrary to the advice #WomenInSTEM & #POCinSTEM receive, we cannot actually #leanin to solving the problem of #genderbias & #racialbias in #STEM & #academia. Thanks to @NatureEcoEvo & @RoinnAnLuisigh for this chance to say this. 1/
A few months ago, @Nature published a piece with advice on how senior women can confront #genderbias. While the advice contained therein was useful, the title was enraging. nature.com/articles/d4158…. 2/
It led me to rage tweet a thread of statistics on #genderbias in #STEM, and that thread blew up And then I got incredibly lucky when @RoinnAnLuisigh offered me the opportunity to turn it into a column. Working with her was AMAZING! 1000% fantastic 3/

So I wanted to close tonight by talking a bit about how I got involved in #diversity #equity #inclusion efforts in #STEM and otherwise, and some general considerations for getting involved, especially as a white, hetero, cisgender individual.
If you had told me 20 years ago that I would be involved, I'm not sure I would have believed you. I was a pretty ignorant and inherently biased individual bc of where and how I grew up. But luckily people can grow. A couple things happened that changed my path.
Gainesville and UF were a huge part of it. I've lived in other colleges and cities, but it's been different here. Even with all their problems, the town & university have more diversity than anywhere I'd been & people were openly discussing big important related issues together.

I know folks wanted to talk about #anxiety & #gradschool. I'm going to share some things that only close contacts know bc I think its important to discuss it openly. I've always managed with some anxiety since a young age but grad school & life brought things to a breaking point
Beyond the normal grad school pressures, I found myself leaving an emotionally abusive relationship, learning how to parent alone, and losing my mom, who watched my son while I did field work, to cancer.
I suddenly found myself unable to do the fieldwork upon which my whole identity was built. The impacts from my relationship and the grief of losing my mother also made it really hard to trust myself to make decisions or take actions. My mental health took a nose dive & I froze.
