The bloody cops are bloody keen
To bloody keep it bloody clean
The bloody chief's a bloody swine
Who bloody draws a bloody line
At bloody fun and bloody games
The bloody kids he bloody blames
Are nowhere to be bloody found
Anywhere in chicken town
The bloody scene is bloody sad
The bloody news is bloody bad
The bloody weed is bloody turf
The bloody speed is bloody surf
The bloody folks are bloody daft
Don't make me bloody laugh
It bloody hurts to look around
Everywhere in chicken town
The bloody train is bloody late
You bloody wait you bloody wait
You're bloody lost and bloody found
Stuck in fucking chicken town

Today is #NationalPoetryDay, but misogyny doesn’t take a day off so neither do we.

This poem is dedicated to .@SussexUni. May you be called to account for your failure to take a stand against misogyny.

Beware of men who wear women
wear women as skins
invented personas to hide themselves in
men who affirm the law of possession
who colonise language of form and oppression
men dressed in womanskin

Beware of men who wear women
who wear women’s faces
dilettantes, smitten by
all that abases
flushed by the thrill of the heat of their shame
believing all women must relish the same as
the men who wear women’s faces

Beware of men who wear women as monstrous creations
werewomen, shaped by ignoble sensations
men who are willing to consume whole lives

In the UK, it's national poetry day,
The one day of the year when I can legally say,
I wrote some poems and put them in a book,
They're all here, if you want to take a look.

And now...

The poem of the day.

Entitled...

## That's Unbelievable

2/10
Some people say, "That's unbelievable"
About a thing that's quite achievable.

They mean they simply "can't imagine"
And that can be solved by taking action.

Numerous people over the years have asked, "Why read war poetry?" Would love to hear others' thoughts and/or poems that illustrate answers on #NationalPoetryDay. #warpoetry #poetry behindtheirlines.blogspot.com @sommecourt @PikeGrey1418 @felthamgirl @pptsapper @lit_cam @GreatWarGroup ImageImageImage
Thanks to everyone who generously shared their ideas. I'm teaching a university course that has been exploring the question, and the responses will enrich our discussions.

#Invictus by #WilliamErnestHenley

Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the Pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.

In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.

Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds, and shall find, me unafraid.

#NationalPoetryDay with a #SCOTUS twist—some courtly clerihews by Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Henry Taylor (from Brief Candles, LSU Press, 1998):

Antonin Scalia
likes to sing "The Rose of Tralee"—a
treat for all students
of his jurisprudence.
Ruth Bader Ginsburg
said ''Titanic,'' in truth, made her wince. ''Berg
phobia?'' inquired a reporter.
''No,'' she said, ''I just wish it were shorter.''

Anthony Kennedy
was startled: when had he
removed his tie?
And why?
Sandra Day O'Connor
was just about to don her
robes when her clerk
simply went berserk.

David Souter
booted up his computer
and discovered that sex is
treated dryly in LEXIS.
