(Thread 1/4): With @Varneyco on @FoxBusiness - This political hit job against @POTUS45 is the kind of third world nonsense we see in countries like #Pakistan where former presidents are taken down using petty offenses. Well beneath the dignity of New York prosecutorial offices.
(2/4): #Arizona's voting limits do not violate the voting rights act nor do they hurt minorities. Ballot harvesting hurts every #American equally. The 9th circuit got this one wrong. I am thrilled to see this victory for #Election integrity.
(3/4): #Florida's social media law was struck down in part because of vague language. I found the exceptions for Florida based companies like @Disney and @comcast to be a little dubious. With some more work and wordsmithing this could become a great law.

A thread on #Nonprofits and the #SocialMedia platforms like #TikTok #instagram #Twitter #Facebook etc. 1/6
Getting attention from existing or prospective #nonprofit donors/volunteers on any mainstream Social Media platforms is identical. Sure, there are billions of daily actives. However, the sheer volume of user-generated content also generates enormous digital noise. 2/6
It’s 1000x more challenging than getting the attention of people in a busy marketplace; in addition to the countless storefronts, the ad banners, and the hustling salespersons, people have sensory distractions from the innumerable pictures and videos all around them. 3/6

Online giving was up 21% in 2020 according to @blackbaud's Charitable Giving Report (institute.blackbaud.com/charitable-giv…) and broke through to be 13% of all giving 2/
Remember that % from online isn't a great way to measure the impact of digital. If a donor gets an email, sells stock w/ @Wealthsimple, moves it into their DAF w/ @VC_Giving & wires it to your bank this 'digital only' experience inspired by your email won't be 'online' 3/

Dear #MarketingTwitter Colleagues,

The data-driven argument for continued growth in #digital activity and online behavior is flimsy and needs to be scrutinized. (👀@eMarketer & @Merkle)

Let us tell you why:
At the @Merkle #DigitalMarketing event today, we posed this question:

How probable is a reversal in digital activity totals in 2021 Q3&4? How confident can we be in projections for digital behavior in the post-pandemic period if data is based exceptional pandemic-era behavior?
Appreciate @Merkle VP Ryan Gibson’s bottom-line answer:

Time for a thread about the Blackbaud breach mess. The lessons here are for ALL #nonprofits, not just clients of Blackbaud.

But we'll start with this:
If I was a #charity client of Blackbaud, I'd be pissed.
2) Blackbaud had a security breach. Someone hacked into their system and spent time there from February until May. Blackbaud paid the hacker's ransom price and they had reassurances from the hacker that no personal data was lifted from the system. (Sure, if you believe a hacker.)
3) However, Blackbaud 😡 didn't tell its #nonprofit clients about the breach until JULY 😡 and only because it was about to become public. Their emails to NPOs revealing the news were impersonal, full of legalese and with almost no apology.

#HeroesAct2 — LiveTweeting Legislation

Like many #smallbiz attorneys and advocates, I’m spending most of tonight and tomorrow reading over the Democrats newly-released #COVID19 #stimulus package. As I review, I’ll share some insights and discoveries. Stay tuned!
Congress proposes three #setasides for #PPP funding:

(1) at least 10% for #smallbiz with fewer than 10 employees OR for certain loans made to biz in low- and mod-income areas

(2) < 30% for nonprofits, housing coops, and hotels/restaurants

(3) < 50% for supplemental PPP loans.
Also similarly reserves the lesser of 25% or $15B of the unused #PPP loans appropriations for loans by Community Financial Institutions.

Just doing a little late night perusing of INGO's statements of solidarity with the Black community from this week... #DevCommsNerd

While some mentioned how important diversity was, NOT ONE mentioned starting where they are and changing their own governance and leadership. /1
Not the biggies like @WorldVisionUSA, @CARE, @CatholicRelief, @SavetheChildren. Not the "cool" ones like @charitywater or @PIH or @Heifer or @Ashoka or @OxfamAmerica. Not the humanitarian ones like @mercycorps or @RESCUEorg or @MSF_USA. Not @PlanUSA. Not @PactWorld. Not @fhi360.

Must we say it about #povertyporn yet again?

Yes we must:

Charitable portrayals of “helping” often conjure up victimhood and passivity in order to validate the assistance being given. #devcomms #comms4dev #comms4good #fundraising /2
There is a growing awareness that these portrayals uphold - rather than counteract - historical, deeply colonial, and continually politicized notions of “the other.”

And it is not ok. /3

CA's #nonprofits—our clinics, shelters, food banks, senior centers & more—are on the #COVID19 frontlines. Their services are needed now more than ever.

But they're struggling to raise what they need to serve.

Thread on why #DAFs must step up to help —nytimes.com/reuters/2020/0…
What's a donor-advised fund (#DAF)?

As @hasanminhaj explains—they're one of the fastest growing vehicles for charitable giving in the US.

They're appealing bc when you give to a DAF, you take the tax break now—w/out any legal requirement of $ to go to nonprofits. Indefinitely.
DAFs are exploding in popularity—almost *tripling* in total assets since 07.

A *huge* sum of donations go to DAFs. But unlike donations to private foundations, DAFs are *not* legally required to donate a min amount to charities—they get a tax break, w/out having to spend a dime.

"While the assets in the fund are technically no longer controlled by the donor, typically, the fund sponsor permits the donor to direct the sponsor’s charitable giving activities originating with the assets in the fund." #AB1712 /2

Wondering what’s happening with #socialassistance reform in Ontario?

Here’s a new report from @maytree_canada on Service Transformation in Ontario Works.

It's lengthy, so I’ve tried to capture the threads with, well, this thread🧵. #onpoli

maytree.com/publications/s…
Though the gov repealed some of its early decisions on income support, there are significant changes underway on the service delivery side, in particular changes to the employment and skills training offered to #OntarioWorks recipients that we need to pay attention to.
The paper explores what these changes are, whether they address the root causes leading people living in #poverty to need support from OW, how other countries fared when undertaking similar reforms (spoiler alert: not great), & things that @ONgov will need to consider.

A 20 second (!!) video + pop culture.

You doing that?

Actually, I'll answer my own question: No. You're probably not.

The right has gotten better at digital strategy + psychographics.

#NatSec #DataScience
The left? Not so much. I lead a digital marketing firm & I regularly give talks about how to leverage pop culture for #SocialGood. Why? Because that's where the people are.

Here is a social experiment.

Will I be reported to @Twitter for using offensive and demeaning language if I use -- correctly -- the word "#niggardly" -- in a sentence?

The Hawaii Supreme Court rejected the tax assessor's approach as a niggardly construction of the statute.
I've been reviewing decisions of the #HawaiiSupremeCourt on the question of whether #nonprofits were properly charged a #generalexcise #tax under Hawaiian law for various activities and operations that produced #income to the organization.
Courts begin (and end) their principal analysis of such issues by examining an underlying tax law, code, rule, or regulation.
