#CLCPA #NYActsOnClimate by sacrificing #ReliableEnergy #GridReliability #AffordableEnergy in the name of #ClimateAction under #GreenDogma by ignoring #ReliableCarbonFree #NuclearPower nypost.com/2023/02/09/get…
"Québec last week avoided a blackout, despite the frigid Arctic cold snap, by importing electricity from New York. But it may be out of luck next time, along with the Empire State itself, thanks to the green rush to kill reliable sources of power."
The #CLCPA mandates that 70% of New York’s power come from renewables by 2030, and 100% carbon-free sources by 2040. But, New York’s doesn't have to lose reliable generating capacity to serve load when #solar or #wind plants can’t deliver.

ever heard of clean firm power? it's basically power that creates electricity 24/7 and doesn't release carbon emissions into our atmosphere that cause climate change. it's called nuclear energy. you should check it out sometime. 😜 <a thread> #isodope #nuclearpower

Maybe us pro-nukes would be a little more tolerant of #wind and #solar if their grid integration efforts and subsequent electricity market rules were not solely designed to kill off perfectly good #nuclearpower plants.
And if you think there is a level playing field out there for wind, solar and nuclear to battle it out on merit, you are smoking crack. Everything is rigged against nuclear. The political institution pushing climate mitigation often hates nuclear power.
Get out of here with your “the economics just don’t add up” horseshit. It would if we had the political will to implement effectively. But no, we have a regulatory body that kills any hopes of implementation we have. I’m tired of the victim blaming nuclear receives.

This AM I entered the uranium sector in a small manner. Been watching the market and learning for some time now. I bought pure play physical uranium trust units. Not explorers, not producers. I may or may not buy producers, possibly explorers.
Given the spot price of uranium is a secret until the last day of each month and the longitudinal spot price suffered immensely post-Fukushima now is a moment to act. Others, bolder, perhaps much smarter, moves a year or so ago.👏
There have been some instantial minor see-saws for the last decade, but the market has gradually strengthened and a number of factors are bringing nuclear power into the public psyche.

Imagine 1970s energy policy being orders of magnitude better than 2020s energy policy. See any windmills, solar panels, or unnecessary transmission? Me, neither. See Nordstream 1 or 2? Nope.
Do you see France having to mine to the center of the earth? Yea, me, neither.🤷‍♂️
Do you see any kind of "taxonomy" boondogle? Hydrogen pipelines that can't possibly work according to any material science engineer? Nope. uk.finance.yahoo.com/news/madrid-pa…

Yet, there are TWO wars. One, is in #Ukraine, and Ukraine has consistently "punched above its weight". One is in #Europe, where the main Russian weapon has been #Germany./ @Halsrethink @TomekDeptuch @RobertMCutler @pietercleppe @nglinsman @pmakela1 @ResearchRonin @BaldingsWorld
While there are undoubted successes on the ground in #Ukraine, #Russia is still playing its card much better on #Europe. Keeping tensions high about #ZaporizhzhiaNuclearPowerPlant played into keeping #Germany from restarting its #NuclearPower plants.(/)
That keeps #Nordstream1 and 2 on the table, and renewables going for Russia (#RenewableEnergy is 2/3 gas, 1/3 whatever solar or wind you deploy). Even with a diversification of sources, Renewable fans won't drill domestically and two more years of #Biden will help. (/)

"Competitive advantage" comes from "Competition", i.e. trying to be on average better or at least adequate in a game where may players are involved and where everyone sees everyone else. Think "bicycle race". (/)
But it is not enough to be adequate on a STATIC framework: there are ups and downs, hills and turns. So there is an element of foresight and tradeoffs needed. Time lags are also EXTREMELY important. Look up #OODA Loop for reference. (/)

Btw for those interested, me and @Kaikenhuippu have written two fairly well received and, we hope, balanced books about the role #NuclearPower could play in the climate fight.

The TL;DR version is Climate Gamble. Available in many languages as well!

climategamble.net
The longer version of the argument can be found in the Dark Horse. In English, Finnish, and soon in Polish as well!

Someone once called these “the Nordic social democratic take on nuclear power” and I liked the description :).

amazon.com/Dark-Horse-Nuc…
The books were written in 2015-2016 but English editions in particular have been updated and revised, and I believe they hold up fairly well. Many people have said that these books really helped them to update their beliefs about nuclear energy and its prospects.

#Russian President #Putin did not abandon the options for using #nuclear weapons in the war with #Ukraine. He gave direct orders to prepare such.
1/11 Image
We've repeatedly talked about the fact that #Putin usually gives orders to prepare several options for the implementation of a number of decisions. After all the options are prepared, he chooses the one he likes best right before the implementation of a plan.
2/11 Image
This way, one of the scenarios for the development of the conflict is being actively prepared when #Putin can realize the possibility of using tactical #nuclear weapons.

Ranked: Nuclear Power Production, by Country 🏭

// Thread ↓🧵
1/ Concentrated supply

Just 15 countries account for more than 91% of global nuclear power production

In the U.S., nuclear power produces over 50% of the country’s clean electricity.
2/ Chinese Growth

China, the world’s second-largest nuclear power producer, is investing further in nuclear energy in a bid to achieve its climate goals.

The plan, which includes building 150 new reactors by 2035, could cost as much as $440 billion.

🔥 Recognition of #atom as #ESG investment can increase capitalization of $KAP by 6 times, RDV sources calculated.

#Uranium producers can follow path of raw material suppliers for GreenTech: World has begun to recognize #nuclear as green.

Thread 🧵👇
After start of development of global environmental agenda, not only GreenTech companies, but also suppliers of raw materials for them, have risen in price. Development of #EV, #solarpanels, windmills and batteries required a large amount of raw materials.
Atom will be perceived on a par with other green technologies. This means that world will need more fuel for #nuclearpower plants - #uranium. Market can value its miners on par with lithium miners.

Excited to share my new #study with my colleague Toshiaki Yoshida @to4akiyo4da at @NUPoliSci! We measured strong negative #policy feedback effects of #nuclearpower plants on the overall #socialcapital of cities that host them! Key policy insights for #energy. Tweetorial below!
@to4akiyo4da and I asked, does adopting #nuclearpower strength or weaken cities' civil society? NPPs promised to improve #rural economies, but led to mixed outcomes in Japan (eg. @dojin_tw's article bit.ly/ando_m) How about civil society?
(3)
To measure strength of #civilsociety, we used 4 proxies for social cohesion/#socialcapital: total migration (do people stay or leave?), crime rates (strong norms or not?), voter turnout (are they invested?), winning party vote (strong linking ties to govt or not?)

1/ Some quick takeaways from this morning's @NAC_Kazatomprom management call with new CEO Mr. Mazhit Sharipov. Note that due to the Russian to English translation, some of the transcript is choppy.

#uranium #nuclear #nuclearpower

kazatomprom.kz/en/media/view/…
2/ First, the Sharipov opens by clearly stating that their strategy of value over volume will not change and cuts will continue as planned. They are also seeing supply chain impacts to their production and cost base. Also seeing tightening supply and increased customer interest.
3/ While not many details were disclosed on today's China term contract news, they remain comfortable with market related pricing today (i.e., remain bullish price). Will consider hybrid fixed / market contracts in future but need higher prices to make them comfortable

Coal generates nearly 40% of the world's electricity, close to its highest share in decades.

Thermal coal prices are spiking out of control all over the world. I’m some places doubling historic all time highs.
“Natural gas is the fastest growing fossil fuel, accounting today for 23% of global primary energy demand and nearly a quarter of electricity generation”

Again natgas prices spiking out of control and taking power prices with it

Today the World Nuclear Industry Status Report will be published! We European Greens have supported this report financially, so that the public is sufficiently informed about the global machinations of the #nuclear industry! Checkout the statistics and go through the #threat:
Let's start with the most worrying figure: The average age of the global #reactor fleet has now risen to 31 years. Many of the currently active reactors were built to run for 30 years but were extended. The older the nuclear fleet, the greater the risk of disaster
The report, which will appear on worldnuclearreport.org today, lists 416 active reactors, 8 more than in 2020. As for the share of nuclear power in the global electricity market, the report sees no change, as in previous years: The share is stagnant at about 10%.

A news headline from @ShippingWatch yesterday says the energy needed to fuel the 8 new @Maersk methanol newbuildings with green methanol (360,000 tons per year) would be more than Denmark's RE output.

1/12
I can't find the exact number for Denmark's RE output, but let's assume it's around 80 TWh per year. Let's also assume that the energy use of the entire deep sea fleet of global shipping is 1,000x the consumption of these 8 newbuildings.

2/12
So if the news headline is correct, that would mean that international shipping needs at least 80,000 TWh of carbon free energy to synthetically build enough fuel to carbon-neutrally power the world's merchant fleet.

⚠️BREAKING: The Japan Olympic Committee @JapanOlympic AND the world famous Tezuka Production appear to have FORGOTTEN what ATOM☢️ stands for and that this #Tokyo2020 Games was to be a symbol of RECOVERY and HEALING from the FUKUSHIMA NUCLEAR DISASTER☣️. Or may be it wasn't.

I’m curious if the @stoolpresidente still thinks it’s criminal to try to stop the average uneducated investor from ruining themselves by buying a stock that is obviously squeezing and is over valued by 50x or probably 100x.
Just because you’ve made a bunch of money promoting your sports gambling app doesn’t mean you know fuck all about stock markets and the history of squeezes, or pump and dumps
Sure perhaps the wsb crowd wasn’t putting out false information and saying GameStop was worth more than $10/Share. But, many on that forum where lying through their teeth.

#China #Fuqing #Fujian #NuclearPower

On 30 January, China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC) announced that Unit 5 of China's Fuqing Nuclear Power Plant, the world's first demonstration project to implement China's indigenous Generation III nuclear power technology,
Hualong One, also known as HPR1000, was put into commercial service. The achievement marks a milestone for China's nuclear power advancement, making China the fourth country after the US, France and Russia to master its indigenous Generation III nuclear power technology.
-FYI

For Chinas goverment nuclear power plants are part of there project to archive climate neutrality and get supported by the state.

1. India's Nuclear ambitions was evident since 1944, credit to N-programme pioneer #HomiJehangirBhabha.
2. Amidst all post-independence challenges, by 1960 N-Prgm taken shape & Bhabha estimated to have N-weapon production in a year or so when asked by Nehru.
3. N-prgm derailed due to China-India War (Oct-Nov'1962) to again pick-up pace post India-Pak '65 war, when India 'felt' need of N-weapons.
4. But now big bolt to our N-ambitions- Bhabha died (or killed?) in a plane crash in 24-Jan-66, exactly after 13 days, Lal B. Shastri...
