Much of the perfectionism struggle of #productmanagers stems from how the organization's culture handles change and uncertainty, and how technical company leaders are.

It's more common than not that management and company leaders lack experience in software and even fundamental technical literacy.

They don't understand that software is unpredictable and that timelines and roadmaps can only ever be rough estimates.
When management demands detailed new plans and review meetings every time things don't go according to plan, it makes product managers want to nail everything down super early and not tolerate unknowns.

#productmanagers It doesn't matter how much effort you put into crafting your business requirements. Or if you brought engineers into the conversation early on during product ideation.
The very nature of software is unpredictability. At some point, sh*t will hit the fan, or at the very least, something will not go according to plan.
The best product managers know this intimately. Not only do they *not* expect perfection, they *expect things to go wrong* at some point in the software development process.

#productmanagers, it's normal to be afraid of asking "stupid" questions during engineering meetings if you're not confident in your technical skills. You're far from the only one.

But when you feel this way, remember this:

Being concerned about looking stupid is *not actionable*. It's negative self-talk and insecurity that drags you down and keeps you from growth.
Instead, in those moments, remind yourself that there are no stupid questions..

.. only ill-informed questions that reflect a lack of fundamental understanding of software and technology.

I got asked via my newsletter about the traits of the best and worst #productmanagers I've worked with..

.. and man, this question really took me on a walk down memory lane.
I immediately had flashbacks of my time at Amazon as an engineer, working with some of the most talented product managers I’ve ever worked with… and ironically, also some of the most frustrating.
What separated them? Three things immediately come to mind:

- Willingness to improve your technical skills
- Ability to bridge the pm<->engineering communication gap
- Having an “enabling” vs. “telling” mindset

As many of you know, I started my career as both a Product Manager and a #UX Designer. I actually didn't know these were two different disciplines for a long time - to me they seemed so intertwined. /1
When I started freelancing, I redesigned a SAAS data platform. The company had been struggling to close sales because it "didn't look modern". After redesign, sales skyrocketed. They exited a year later for a ridiculous sum of money, all without adding any new functionality. /2
This is why I'm passionate about #productmanagers understanding #UXDesign. Not just for the sake of the user - I have seen first hand how much a business can take a hit when #UX is deprioritized, and also the flip side - how much it thrives once its fixed. /3

.@WhatsApp has made connecting with friends and family so much simpler and easier. It has defacto become the primary mode of communication especially around the festive season to communicate our wishes. On NYE, approx 100 Bn messages were exchanged on #WhatsApp (thread)
Out of this, approx 20 Bn were sent from India. Fair game considering 25% of WhatsApp’s global user base comes from India. Multiple #product #innovations seen by #WhatsApp users across the world have originated in India
Which is why, it is surprising that @WhatsApp on #iPhone has such a broken experience compared to #WhatsApp on #Android.

I’ve been meeting a ton of younger / newer PMs, and when I ask them why they’re interested in the field, they give these canned responses about enjoying working in teams, influencing without authority, enjoying legos when they were kids... 😌
Growing up in Nigeria, the common joke was that you could either be a lawyer, doctor, engineer, or disgrace to the family. Naturally, we all had canned responses for one of the non-disgrace options. But hadn’t really thought about what we wanted for ourselves.
The MBAs / CS graduates I meet these days make #prodmgmt sound like one of the non-disgrace career options I heard when I was a child.

It’s a solid choice, and if you know enough about it, choosing it is in of itself a humble brag (ie I love teams, leading w/o influence etc).

Cure to #Scalability Syndrome. #ProductManagers must know the difference between a #tool and an #instrument. People begin with the dream of a tool and over a period of time makes it an instrument. Instruments stretch the learnability curve. Create fatigue in users. Example,
#Photoshop is an instrument because it is collection of tools. When Aha launched a poorly designed prototype tool ( poorly wrt dedicated prototype tools available in the market), I pointed out about it stretching itself too thin trying to be a #generalist. In such situation
#Onboarding, #DiaryKeeping, #ContextualEnquiry and #EthnographicStudies can only show the right path. A study which covers the length and breath of user horizon, done over a long period of time reducing the error variation.
