1. #Italy is going through a devastating economic crisis, millions live in poverty, our #PublicHealthSystem is collapsing, and yet our government will increase our #MilitarySpending dramatically.
Most of Italian media don't dare to say: we can't afford to spend so much
2. as a journalist,I was relieved when reading the #WikiLeaks cables: they provide evidence that between 2001 and Feb2010, both right-wing and centerleft Italian governments resisted US pressures to increase #Italy's #MilitarySpending to 2% GDP. BUT now, things will change
3. #Italy will increase its #MilitarySpending dramatically,no matter millions live in poverty and poverty will skyrocket, no matter our hospitals are collapsing, after #Covid.
Most of the Italian media don't dare to say: we shouldn't spend so much for weapons,we can't afford it

Last night, we celebrated @edyong209’s #Pulitzer win.

I’d like to say the same thing to you as I did in my speech: for the past year+, we have all struggled to make sense of a global crisis while attempting to survive it. We will continue to cope with it all for years. (1/3) Two very happy people sitting on the floor snuggling a black
We only survive together. We need each other so incredibly much, in so many ways.

Ed estimates that the work he was honored for had him talking with more than three hundred sources(!)

I’ve been thinking about these connections, these starry webs, these “rete mirabile”
Ed’s writing is luminous, but those beautiful words grow from a beautiful foundation. The way he elicits people’s ideas, sifts them, clarifies them, finds a way to tame the incomprehensible without pretending it is simple or easy. He is generous & light-hearted, wise but humble.

It feels discordant to be celebrating awards right now, while we're in the middle of a terrible crisis. But the #Pulitzer Prizes are really about reflecting on the remarkable and important journalism being performed all across the country, and that's more important than ever.
I am so, so proud of all my @nytimes colleagues who were winners and finalists. The idea that I get to come to work (er, Zoom to work) every day alongside these fearless, dogged and talented journalists still boggles my mind.
And I am *beyond* excited to see @brianmrosenthal, recognized for his incredible work. Brian is one of the most talented investigative reporters working today. He is also one of the kindest and most generous colleagues.

1/ Today The #Pulitzer Prize Board announced that three of @hannahdreier’s articles from her series on MS-13 have won the 2019 Pulitzer Prize for feature writing.

Here’s a look at the stories that are being honored and how they came to be:
2/ After Trump seized on MS-13’s violence to promote tougher immigration policies, @hannahdreier realized that anti-immigrant rhetoric and police bias were undermining efforts to combat a brutal gang that preyed on Latino teenagers.

3/Her first piece (published w/ @NYMag) told the story of Henry, a high school #MS13 member who worked with law enforcement for about a year thinking they’d help him escape and start a new life.

Instead, they turned him over to immigration authorities.
