The #IPCC #AR6 WG3 report includes a comprehensive assessment of Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR), its role in mitigation strategies and long-term pathways, but also a techno-economic assessment of ~10 CDR methods
An ongoing 🧵
[1/n] Image
For Carbon Dioxide Removal, it's still early days in #climate policy, although there are already established methods (mainly forestry-related and soil carbon sequestration, not necessarily done to remove CO2)
In #AR6 reports, there aren't chapters dealing solely with CDR
[2/n]
There was quite some CDR coverage already in the #AR6 Special Reports on 1.5°C (#SR15) and on land (#SRCCL). In WG I, CDR was mainly assessed in chapter 5 ('Biogeochemical Cycles'), and a bit in chapter 4

Typical. No talk of poverty despite the constant emphasis on "global". India consumes approx 4 kg annual per capita (old 2013(?) FAO, but cant find new), world average around 40, and US around 90-100. Our problem or your problem? @3rdworldnetwork #ClimateJustice
Solitary intervention on malnutrition. Acknowledges protein needs in low, medium income countries. But recommends protein from small fish, bivalve molluscs and insects!!
#SRCCL despite intense effort refused to consider differentiation in headline messaging. Only concession, even-handed statements of food loss & wastage, for South and North respectively. Plea was authors and references didn't have it. Poverty needs citations, thank you!!

Recent @IPCC_CH reports had assessed the state of scientific knowledge related to fire and climate change.
For instance, the Australasia WGII #AR5 report (2014) had very clear conclusions on vulnerability to intense bushfire and observed and projected increase in fire weather for southern Australia.
Full chapter 25 available here : ipcc.ch/report/ar5/wg2/
There was a dedicated box on climate change and fire, and it was also mentioned in a Frequently Asked Question on key risks from climate change to Australia

THREAD – CLIMATE TIPPING POINTS IN @IPCC_CH 2018 AND 2019 SPECIAL REPORTS
There has recently been a very broad interest in the issue of climate tipping points, following the media coverage of this commentary in @NatureNews : nature.com/articles/d4158…
Commentary pieces are commissioned by Nature’s editors. I do not think that they are peer-reviewed.

The #IPCC 1.5°C Special Report #SR15 used four illustrative pathways that varied by BECCS.

They all have considerable land-use change: 1500 million hectares is 4.5 India's!

If they don't have large-scale BECCS, they have large-scale afforestation. Land impacts unavoidable.

1/
These are the four illustrative pathways. From left to right, they have more and more BECCS (yellow), though this does not correlate with land areas or impacts

From SPM ipcc.ch/sr15/

2/
The #IPCC Special Report on Climate Change & Land #SRCCL says that BECCS is bad at scale (red), while afforestation is good (blue) across all dimensions but food security

But, if "best practice" is used, the BECCS & afforestation seem to be a win-win-win-win. Hmmm...

How is climate change affecting fire risk? In the recent @IPCC_CH special report on #ClimateChange & land, this is assessed based on 20 scientific studies. The results show the key role of increasing fire weather and population growth in fire-prone regions. #SRCCL (Thread; 1/n)
The above figure shows a 'burning ember', it represents a synthesis of the available scientific knowledge on the topic in one intuĂŻtive color scheme. Every color has a meaning, with darker colors denoting higher risk levels (2/n)
Transitions between risk levels can be wide or narrow, and include a confidence statement. The y-axis respresents increasing global warming levels. See O'Neill et al. (2017 NCC) for more details: nature.com/articles/nclim… (3/n)

This has not changed from earlier #IPCC assessments (like #AR5 or #SR15), but, not surprisingly, trade-offs with other forms of land-use are better highlighted in #SRCCL
All mitigation pathway archetypes for 1.5-2 °C (RCP1.9/2.6) include large volumes of carbon dioxide removal, even the very optimistic Pathway 6 that excludes engineered CDR (represented by BECCS) but relies on a large land sink ipcc.ch/srccl-report-d… (ch 2.6.2) #SRCCL
Cumulative CDR volumes by 2100 for these 6 archetype mitigation pathways are quite high
P1: 395 Gt BECCS + 73 Gt Afforestation
P2: 466 Gt BECCS + 117 Gt AF
P3: 944 Gt BECCS only
P4: 300 Gt BECCS + 428 Gt AF
P5: 252 Gt BECCS + 128 Gt AF
P6: 124 Gt AF only

As a country and as a planet we simply have to reduce how much meat and dairy we consume.

The new @IPCC_CH #SRCCL report is available at ipcc.ch/srccl-report-d… . The SPM is a very interesting read and has several interesting points that jump out at me both generally and from an Ireland perspective. (1/n)
Firstly climate and land degradation are entwined risks. If we want to reduce risk to land we need to get serious about addressing climate change. But also, agriculture globally is c.25% contributor (nationally its higher). Proverbially making a rod for our own backs (2/n)
Secondly, there are no two ways around it that our patterns of consumption matter. Higher consumption places greater stress on the system making it less robust. What does that mean in practical terms? (3/n)

Takeaways from the #IPCC Special Report on #ClimateChange & Land (#SRCCL). A thread.

1) We use a lot of land (much unsustainably)

Humans directly affect ~72% of "global ice-free land surface" & all is impacted by climate change (e.g. through warming & more intense extremes

1/9
2) A two-way interaction

Our use of land drives #ClimateChange ("agriculture, forestry and other land use" are ~23% of global man-made GHG emissions) & climate change adds stresses so worsens existing risks (e.g. biodiversity & degradation from extremes events)

2/9 #IPCC #SRCCL
3) As well as being an emission source, land is a sink

Photosynthesis draws down carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and fixes it in plants (and soils). Overall the land is a net sink of ~29% of total human-induced CO2 emissions.

The next #IPCC Special Report is out, this time on climate change & land (#SRCCL). ipcc.ch/report/srccl/

There is plenty to digest over the coming days, weeks, months, years, but a few initial reactions from the SPM...

1/
Just to set the scene, no pressure: "Land provides the principal basis for human livelihoods and well-being including the supply of food, freshwater and multiple other ecosystem services, as well as biodiversity." Land is already heavily impacted...
2/
Agriculture, Forestry, & Other Land Uses (AFOLU) are a quarter of global GHG emissions (GWP100).

The natural response of land to human-induced environmental change has been to cause a sink of ~11.2GtCOâ‚‚/yr, 29% of global COâ‚‚. This may not last with climate change.

1. After the 2018 @IPCC_CH report spelled out the difference between a 2 Degree and 1.5 Degree world, here's a few thoughts on tomorrow's #SRCCL report that will put the spotlight on how the way we use our land will affect our odds of hitting 1.5 degree and what this means for EU
2. Firstup, despite the deeply worrying state of land use, the existence of the report itself, ahead of the @UNClimateSummit this September and two crucial COP's next year on climate and biodiversity is an important step forward
3. Secondly, it represents a growing consensus on where the solutions are; restoring ecosystems (in particular peatlands), reducing meat consumption and production, securing indigenous land rights
