The announcement from the feds on expanded status is restrictive & unjust. This program is set to run for only 6 months but will close as soon as the cap on immigration is met. There are hundreds of thousands of migrants that qualify if not for the cap. #cdnpoli #Statusforall 1/4
There should be no english requirement. ESPECIALLY due to but also outside a pandemic. There should be no requirement for a valid work permit or to be employed in order to 'qualify' for immigration status. These requirements are fundamentally exclusionary and racist. #cdnpoli 2/4
This one-off window is a poorly set up and deeply racist and classist band aid solution to a lethal problem that is solvable with #StatusForAll not the expansion of exclusionary immigration and moving goal posts with arbitrary rules for inclusion. 3/4

BREAKING: Migrant students deliver 16,000 petitions to Immigration Minister to stop mass deportations ahead of Dec 31 deadline!

@marcomendicino @JustinTrudeau Don't punish migrants for the pandemic. Make work permits renewable. #RenewPGWP #StatusForAll

SHARE WIDELY!
Thousands were given time-restricted work permits upon graduation, but must complete high-waged jobs to qualify for PR. With COVID-19 job losses worsening again in the 2nd wave, most don't have access to these jobs and yet their permits remain non-renewable and are set to expire.
COVID-19 has changed everything, but unfair immigration rules stay the same. Current & former international students are running out of time. Thousands face deportation after December 31st if they don’t fulfill requirements for permanent residency that are out of their control.

See you at 12 PM at his office (511 Lawrence Ave W)!

#StatusforAll @marcomendicino
We’re setting up in front of @marcomendicino’s office right now & decorating his shiny windows with our call to action: don’t punish migrant workers for the pandemic! Make work permits renewable — a quick, pragmatic, bureaucratic fix that would immediately stop deportations.
