For #WorldEngineeringDay and with #InternationalWomensDay coming up, here’s a thread of five female engineers #WomenInSTEM 🧵 🪡

(By the way, #TransWomenAreWomen)
Edith Clarke was the first woman to be awarded an electrical engineering degree from MIT, and the first woman to be professionally employed as an electrical engineer in the US. She worked on the hydroelectric systems that, to this day, provide hydropower at the West Hoover Dam. Black and white, early 20th century photo of Edith Clark: a

Thanks for the question! As far as I can tell, a lot of what it means to be trans is not being discussed. And what is being discussed is mostly clownish, politicized, and unnecessarily divisive. I'll share what I think might be helpful. 🧵
For starters, I'll try to define what "being trans" means to me. In my view, a person is made up of two components: a body and a soul. The body has a sex, while the soul does not. The sex of the body is almost always male or female.
My understanding is that a very small percentage of people may be born with both male and female reproductive parts. But almost everyone has a body that is clearly male or clearly female. For the sake of simplicity, I will limit my discussion moving forward to these clear cases.

Note Jon Stewart's exacerbation here. It demonstrates that, even for those who pushin transgenderism, it is women who have babies, not men.

This undermines his whole argument & that of transgenderism in general.

Please consider retweeting this to amplify it. It shows the contradiction in the position of proponents of transgenderism.

There was so much incredible material that I just couldn't fit into this piece. The most moving were the expressions of support for Sandy I found from women writing in lesbian-feminist newsletters and magazines from the time. #TransHistory #LesbianHistory #TransWomenAreWomen 🧵
There were certainly hostile responses to the Olivia scandal, but there was also pushback against that. In 1978 Lesbian Connection printed ten letters responding to an open letter criticising Olivia for working with a trans woman. Eight of those ten disagreed, siding with Olivia. Image description: Cover of Lesbian Connection magazine, Feb
Some of the letters describe loving personal and romantic relationships between cis and trans lesbians. #LWithTheT #TransWomenAreWomen #TransHistory #LesbianHistory

Hey everyone, I’m a mom. I work in an allied healthcare profession. I’m a so called #terf. I don’t have a singular #peaktrans experience, but rather a culmination of experiences. So here we go!
Almost a decade ago, I learned that terms #genderdysphoria and #transgender. There were some people who had extreme distress about their sex and they felt happier looking and presenting like the opposite sex. They worked closely with doctors and therapists.
I didn’t care. None of my business. But when hospital coworkers and staff started saying #TransWomenAreWomen , I started to question it. How could they literally be women? #whatisawoman ?

Why I say #TranswomenAreMen and not #TranswomenAreWomen. The clue is in the prefix, "Trans". This stems from the word "Transition", which means a state of change from one thing towards another.
The subject of the term "transwoman" therefore refers to someone who is in (cont)... Image
...the process of changing from being a man towards becoming a woman. So, for as long as that process is taking place, the person is actually a man, and will remain so until full womanhood is achieved. And by referring to themself as a "transwoman" that is precisely what the... Image
... person is saying, i.e: "I am a man in the process of transforming into a woman."
So, by self-definition, a transwoman is a man.

Thread re: Republican U.S. Senator Marsha Blackburn’s question to Ketanji Brown Jackson— Let’s talk about how utterly absurd it is to give the following command to another person: “Define woman”. The word ‘woman’ isn’t something that can easily be defined, due to the fact that 1/
it’s A SOCIAL CONSTRUCT. After all, just give it a try. Please just try to define the word ‘woman’. And as you’re doing so in your mind, I invite you to keep reading…
If you say a woman is someone who was born with a vagina, that statement is very obviously not always true. 2/
If any person who claims “women were born w/ vaginas” were to look at the person in this picture I’ve posted, they would *definitely* assume that she’s a woman. They’d *definitely* be referring to her with “she/her” pronouns and would believe she’s a woman. And they’d be right.3/

1/20 🧵

I have been hearing more frequently the narrative that women's sport apparently exists as a 'protected category' so that women can win (because on this account without it no woman will ever win again)

This is: a) *not* the reason why women's sport exists as a category,
2/20

and b) it is *not* true that women will never win again.

This narrative is profoundly paternalistic and keeps women small.
3/20

Let's unpack this a little:

A. Women's sport exists as a category because the dominance of men athletes was threatened by women competing.

We see this over and over again in the history of sport...

Richard has either failed to read the declaration he’s signed, or he’s adopted the position of being anti-science and anti-human rights. I think it’s time for a breakdown thread…
The declaration states that signees are pushing for “all appropriate measures, including legislation, to modify or abolish existing laws, regulations customs and practices which constitute discrimination against women.’’

That seems fine, right?
Signers also want “appropriate measures, including legislation, to ensure the full development and advancement of women, for the purpose of guaranteeing them the exercise and enjoyment of human rights and fundamental freedoms on a basis of equality with men.’’ Also fine, right?..

Breaking down "Biological Sex"

Tweeting this rather than replying so I can make a proper chain. Credit to @RileyJayDennis for helping me frame my understanding -

1/14
#TransRightsAreHumanRights #TranswomenAreWomen #transmenaremen #trans #TransIsBeautiful
Biological Sex is a human-created classification system for sorting organisms based on their reproductive abilities. The stuff that ‘biological sex’ describes is objective, but the system isn’t.

2/14
The most widely used model for determining sex is:
Genitals
Gonads
Hormones
Secondary sex characteristics
Chromosomes

These 5 things are measurable facts. But grouping them together under one system is a human invention. A model for understanding and classifying bodies.

Hey researchers, listen up!
Here’s a crash course thread on writing gender questions from a trans person who has designed surveys before.
We criticize this a lot, but rarely do we show what is correct, so in this thread I’ll do my best to do that. 🧵
Firstly, do you want to ask your research question about sex, or about gender, or about something else entirely? The best advice I can give is this: be specific.
If you’re asking questions about uterine health, ask if your participant has a uterus, not for their gender. If you’re researching gender bias, ask about gender. If you simply need sex statistics, ask about sex.
Think critically about what information you want.

This is going to be controversial, but here goes.
Although I do believe in #GenderEquality, I don't consider myself to be a #feminist.
I will explain the reasons why in this thread... (1/x)
First let's look at the Meriam-Webster definition of the word...

"[A] belief in and advocacy of the political, economic, and social equality of the sexes expressed especially through organized activity on behalf of women's rights and interests."

(2/x)
This definition: ✔️
However, the people that call themselves "feminists" don't always reflect this reality.
Even if you are committed to improving the rights of women, you might very well not be a feminist.
Why? (3/x)

Tw eugenics, queer phobia, violence, medical abuse

The curious thing about anti-queer eugenics is that they will never actually work; being queer is not heritable or contagious. Anti-queer eugenics attempts operate on the false belief that we can be eliminated.
These crusades never succeed at eliminating queer people (it’s not possible, we will always be born into every population); but they do succeed at driving us into hiding. For the perpetrators of these actions, that is often good enough.
They often argue that this is “proof” that they’ve eliminated the “evil influence” or that queer people chose to be queer all along.
You can’t eliminate us. You can only make us suffer from your cruelty.

Hey idk which cis “ally” needs to hear this, but it is literally never acceptable to out someone as trans without their consent.
Also outing someone as trans to “prove” how progressive you are, no matter who they are, is selfish and dangerous. It is not allyship in any capacity.
Also telling anyone a trans person’s deadname without their explicit consent, for any reason, is an act of transphobia. No exceptions.

Now on to Wendy Carlos, trans woman musician who helped invent the popular Moog synthesizer. She composed the scores for A Clockwork Orange, The Shining, and Tron, as well as "Switched on Bach." An absolute legend and godmother of electronic music. Image
