A short thread on the #usopen women's final, and why I think Ons Jabeur and Iga Swiatek are good for tennis (as well as excellent players):
About a decade ago, I was fortunate to get full access to a WTA tournament thanks to a friend who plays on the tour.

Back then, top WTA players very much kept to themselves. The Serenas, Sharapovas & Azarenkas praticed with male hitting partners and basically never spoke.
In contrast, Iga and Ons are very popular in the lockeroom and mingle freely with their colleagues, the way male pros do (since top ATP players have to practice with each other each week in order to get a good workout).

It’s good to be reminded that the American dream isn’t a faded myth. It will be represented in the #USOpen quarterfinals thanks to Frances Tiafoe's upset win over No. 2 seed Rafael Nadal on Monday.

From @helenenothelen
latimes.com/sports/story/2…
Tiafoe’s parents left war-torn Sierra Leone for a better life in the U.S. Alphina was a nurse and often worked two jobs. Frances Sr. became a day laborer on a crew building a junior tennis center in Maryland, later becoming the center’s custodian. latimes.com/sports/story/2…
The most Tiafoe hoped to get out of tennis was a scholarship, because his family couldn’t afford to send him to college. Now he’s the only American left in the men’s field and a two-time Grand Slam event quarterfinalist, following his '19 run in Australia. latimes.com/sports/story/2…

🏆 Emma Raducanu began the #USOpen as a self-effacing London schoolgirl chancing her arm in qualifying, and she ended it the belle of the ball, giving a winner’s interview in her finest evening wear.

@oliverbrown_tel gives us an insight into her world 👇

🎾From sitting her maths and economics A-levels in Bromley to finding her name lit up across New York.

It is, in every sense, the road less travelled.

🗣️"It’s crazy to think that three months ago, I was in an exam hall. Now I’m on the biggest court in the world,” she said Image
🧠"She is the type of teenage polymath who can make everybody else feel inadequate" writes @oliverbrown_tel

For all that Raducanu amazed on the court, her performances in the hours that followed were equally eye-catching

19-year-old Leylah Fernandez will face the 18-year-old Emma Raducanu on Saturday for the title.

It will be the first all-teen final at the #USOpen  since 1999, before either was born, when a 17-year-old Serena Williams beat an 18-year-old Martina Hingis.
I feel like this undersells it, though.

Hingis was #1 and Serena was #7 at the 1999 #USOpen, that final wasn't much of a shock at all.

Having a final between two teens ranked #73 and #150 is a whole different kettle of oat milk.

After being down 4-1, Leylah Fernandez storms back to take the first set 7-6 (7/3) vs No. 2 seed Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus at the #USOpen Thursday.

The winner advances to the women's singles final.
Fernandez, who represents 🇨🇦 and whose mother has 🇵🇭 roots, has been sensational at the #USOpen.

She has beaten these names in the past week:

~ No. 5 Svitolina in qfinals
~ No. 16 Kerber in round of 16
~ No. 3 Osaka in round of 32
An unforced error by Sabalenka allows Fernandez to take a 3-2 lead in Set 2. Fernandez trailed 0-2 to start the set.

Ms. Fernandez, who turned 19 on Monday, is only 5 foot 6, but a giant when it comes to her skills – chasing down impossible balls and fighting off the comeback attempts of her bigger and far more experienced opponents.

Ms. Fernandez’s slight stature and big smile belie her stamina and toughness, which is thanks in part to the training imparted by her father.

Raducanu was untouchable at #USOpen so far, but this is her first match here (and first career match) against a top-40 foe.

And Bencic is a gold medalist just last month, so not just any top-40 player.

Bencic has put pressure on her right from the jump, instilling some doubt.
Raducanu settled and balling now.

On serve, 4-3*, with eight winners to Bencic's four.

Five straight games for Raducanu, who takes the first 6-3 over Bencic.

#ToiletBreak e Querelle #Tsitsipas

Facciamo chiarezza con un bel thread

Si è parlato molto delle ‘presunte’ scorrettezze di Stefano Tsitsipas (e di altri tennisti) che utilizzerebbero in modo antisportivo il toilet break.

Partiamo dalle regole attuali

#Tennis #UsOpen Stefanos Tsitsipas e Daniil Medvedev - Foto Ray Giubilo

Bryson DeChambeau, the new #USOpen champ, is taking golf places it has not gone before.

Part mathematician, part weightlifter, the bulked up perfectionist is setting new standards that others may have no choice but to copy.

Welcome to golf’s revolution.
thestar.com/sports/golf/op…
Golf’s major trends have been all about technology —DeChambeau is employing vastly different ways to use that technology.

First he hit upon the idea of playing with clubs all fitted with the same length shaft, just as the legendary Bobby Jones once did. thestar.com/sports/golf/op… Image
He used a different stance while striking the ball, along with different hand/arm positions. He studied the necessary requirements of projecting a golf ball, then he designed a brand new swing around those requirements, writes @DamoSpin.
